Deniz Tek-- PINE BOX
Deniz Tek was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, home to legendary rock acts like MC5 and The Stooges. Both acts would lay the groundwork for Tek's sound, and he would end up playing with some of their members. In 1971, Tek moved to Sydney, Australia to pursue medical studies. He joined a band called TV Jones as singer/guitarist-- apparently the group had a "fanatical cult following in Wollongong", before falling "afoul of both the police and organised crime simultaneously". Recording attempts...

The Dubliners-- McCAFFERTY
The Dubliners formed in 1962, funnily enough, in Dublin. They did start off as The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group before the name change. The alteration resulted from Ronnie not even liking it, on top of the fact that one of the band members was reading the James Joyce book. The Dubliners' original lineup was Drew (vocals, guitar), Barney McKenna (tenor banjo, mandolin, vocals), Luke Kelly (vocals, banjo), and Ciaran Bourke (vocals, whistle, guitar, harmonica). The band subsequently had a plethora...

Bruno Mars-- YOU CAN COUNT ON ME
Bruno Mars named himself after the red planet because girls apparently used to say he was "out of this world". He seemed to think his real name Peter Gene Hernandez wasn't hip enough-- or perhaps he didn't want to be confused with the great Patrick Hernandez, maker of the massive hit 'Born To Be Alive'. Bruno Mars has had much, much more success than Patrick. Growing up in a musical family in Hawaii (his parents met while performing in a show-- mum was a hula dancer and dad was playing...

Heath Cullen-- SILVER WINGS
I thought I had Heath Cullen's excellent new album to myself, to unleash on the ABC's listening public with the strongest of recommendations. But my former Wollongong compadre Stephen Fitzpatrick-- who now writes for The Australian newspaper for his sins-- beat me to it. Seems we both still like quality music. So I'll quote liberally from his review. "A young man with a dream and a bag of songs quite naturally would make a list of the musicians with whom he'd like to work", he wrote. And...

Noddy Holder - Slade
We love Tuesdays on Drive. To us it means VINYL TUESDAY - it's the day Russ pulls out the record player, dusts it down a bit and puts the needle on an old vinyl compilation album. It means we get to hear some great old music that doesn't get played much these days, but I think the best thing about VINYL TUESDAY is that we get to chat to some great artists. Last Thursday we managed to track down Noddy Holder, the lead-singer from Slade - he was such a great chat and we've had so many...
