As much as I love art and culture, fashion and beauty, I’m also a fan of politics and politicians whose platforms center and elevate the human condition. Today's @fullbodyfrequency guest has gone from Certified Nursing Assistant to the Illinois General Assembly representing the 9th district. And while folks say that all politics are local, Lakesia Collins has made a national impact with her work on behalf of workers, including the Fight for $15, the movement that advocates for the $15 dollar per hour minimum wage. Between June and July of this year, she sponsored over 20 bills in the IL General Assembly while remaining on the frontline, fighting for the rights of workers and children. It’s a wrap! We came, we saw, we conquered Tokyo 2020! Laura Rice of @fullbodyfrequency and Olympic Historian and sports documentarian, @idy_uyoe, wrap up the Olympic Games with a deep dive into the 32nd Olympiad - the highlights, low lights, the hits, and misses. To be clear, no other city, no other nation, was capable of pulling off these games with the same level of discipline, hospitality, and aplomb that Tokyo, Japan, displayed. Thank you, Tokyo! I recently viewed the "Bisa Butler: Portraits" exhibit at The Art Institute of Chicago. Butler's use of vibrant colors, patterns, textiles, stitches, and stitching techniques take quilting to another dimension. This beautifully powerful exhibit continues until September 6, 2021. Butler’s work illuminates U.S. history through the lens of the African American diaspora. Her portrait work is personal, communal, global, and is accompanied by works from fellow genius artists: Romare Bearden, Charles Harris, Gordon Parks, Barbara Jones-Hogu, and Prof. Nelson Stevens. Both Hogu and Stevens are founding members of Africobra (The African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists). Their work, along with photos documenting Black life, the work of other artists, and Bisa Butler’s family photo albums, serve as reference for her magnificent portraiture work. The exhibition’s accompanying playlist has been curated by her husband, John, a long-time DJ.
