Sumi Tonooka's solo Earshot Festival concert on Jazz...
Pianist Sumi Tonooka was born in Philadelphia and is well-established as a pianist, composer and teacher in New York, but her roots are in the Seattle area. Her mother grew up on Bainbridge Island where shelived until at age 16, she and other Japanese-Americans were shipped to the Internment Camps of World War II. George Colligan Organ Trio on Jazz Northwest, KPLU

'Birth of The Cool' in concert on KPLU's Jazz Northwest
High on any list of all-time classic jazz albums is the 1949-50 Miles Davis album "Birth of The Cool" which grew out of an informal composers/ arrangers workshop with Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan and John Lewis among others. Gaye Anderson was owner and proprietor of the New Orleans Creole Restaurant from 1985 until her death on August 29. The popular Seattle vocalist Reggie Goings sings bebop, blues, ballads and a bossa-nova in concert on Jazz Northwest Sunday, June 24 at 1 PM PDT on 88.5 KPLU. The concert was presented by Earshot Jazz and recorded at the Seattle Art Museum earlier this month. The vocalist has roots in Texas and has become a fixture on the Seattle Jazz scene since he arrived in 1986. Pianist Eddie Creed passed on April 19 at the age of 77, and hell be remembered on the next edition of Jazz Northwest (6/10) with a performance recorded by Jim Wilke in 1971 at The Jazz Gallery. Eddie was one of the most active jazz pianists from the 60s through the 80s in Seattle. There will be a memorial concert at The New Orleans on Sunday June 10 from 4 to 8 pm .

What better way to celebrate Aprils Jazz Month than the Tenth Annual Ballard Jazz Festival? There were four nights featuring drums and guitars, a jazz walk among a dozen venues featuring some of Seattles top jazz talent, and culminated in a concert which co-billed pianist Orrin Evans Quartet and The Bobby Broom Trio. A stellar septet of jazz greats played at McCurdy Pavilion during Centrum's Jazz Port Townsend 2011 the last weekend of July. Cuban-born, now American citizen Paquito D'Rivera was nominal leader and spokesman, playing alto sax and clarinet. He played alongside Dizzy Gillespie and other jazz greats who helped bring him to world-wide attention.

Kelly Eisenhower has sung in many settings from night clubs to symphony halls. She toured and sang with the Boston Pops, and was a soloist as well as an arranger and assistant director of the gospel choir on Gladys Knight's Grammy winning CD, "One Voice". Kelly has two CDs of her own as well as two more soon to be issued.

This week on Jazz Northwest we remember saxophonist Hadley Caliman, a teacher, mentor, bandmate, leader and friend to many. Hadley Caliman was diagnosed with liver cancer two years ago, but continued to perform and record with his own groups as well as a featured soloist with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. Our friend passed on Wednesday.
