More informationOn January 1 2013 Derry~Londonderry begins its year as the first UK City of Culture. Using the city as his starting point William Crawley takes us on a journey around modern Northern Ireland to reflect on attitudes to identity in the 'province', 'region', 'country', 'nation'...well, what exactly do you call what one political scientist has labelled the "constitutional oddity" of Northern Ireland? Ulster, the North, the Six Counties...?
The subject of identity hit the headlines recently when Northern Ireland's 23 year old World No 1 golfer Rory McIlroy, who is from a Catholic background, suggested he would declare for Team GB rather than Ireland at the next Olympics. He's since put that decision on hold.
The response to Rory McIlory's statement from Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, was this: "I think his allegiance probably lies all over the place...I actually think he is a great ambassador for all of us".
William Crawley meets men and women around Northern Ireland to consider whether there are changes in perceptions of identity.
