[Podcast] Lisa Ling Talks About Good Journalism.
National Geographic's Explorer, the longest-running documentary series in the history of cable TV, celebrates a quarter-century on the air. One of my favorite Nat Geo journalists is correspondent Lisa Ling. She has done a whole series of great documentaries including on on MS-13, another on women suicide bombers and another on the drug wars in Columbia. However, this were examples of a whole series of things done by National Geographic. As many media outlets continue to cutback, National...

As I prepare to travel to Morocco to cover Morocco's sponsorship of Earth Day 2010, I had an opportunity to go to the Moroccan Embassy in Washington DC to sit down with the Moroccan Ambassador to the United States, Aziz Mekouar. Aziz Mekouar became Ambassador of Morocco to the United States on June 19, 2002. Before his current assignment, Ambassador Mekouar served as ambassador to Italy (1999-2002). [Podcast] The Obama/Medvedev Agreement is Signed. Will...
President Obama and Russian President Medvedev signed an historic agreement today to shrink our nuclear stockpiles as well as delivery systems. This does appear to make us safer. However, tensions continue between the two powers and both seem to be driven by different things. Because of this ongoing confusion, I want to turn to a true expert on the topic, Dr. Samuel Charap on the Center for American Progress. Dr. Charap holds a doctorate in political science from Oxford, was a Marshall...

[Podcast] How GOP Can Make Money Cleaning Up the Earth!
It seems strange but true. If you are an environmentalist, you are left. However, why is that? Doesn't the GOP care? I assume that they must care, right? On the other hand, is it possible to convince those who don't care to clean up the Earth for selfish reasons, like making money? As we celebrate Earth Day for the 40th time on April 22nd, Earth Day Network Education Director Sean Miller talks about how to drive those who don't seem to care. He also talks about how to adapt so-called green...

[Podcast] History Professor Ellen Amster Talks The Role...
Frequently, when people talk about history or culture or religion, they talk about men in history, culture and religion. However, women frequently play a far more significant role than most realize. That is the reason I wanted to talk to Moroccan History Professor Ellen Amster about the role of women in Morocco. Specifically, it is interesting how Islamic culture as a certain influence while the role of France shifted that influence in a unique way. She also talks about how things have...

As Earth Day approaches, and as I prepare to travel to Morocco to cover Earth Day 2010 in Morocco, I thought it makes sense to fill in the gaps of knowledge that I have and others may have about Morocco. Therefore, it makes sense to somebody who has spent a lot of time in the region in general and in Morocco in particular, Michael Kirtley. We talk about travel, safety, food, cost, all sorts of things involving tourism in this uniquely African and Muslim country. Also, we do spend quite a bit...

[Podcast] Can Environmentalists Convince GOP to...
Earth Day is 40 years old this year. And while environmentalists all get the need to focus on the issue, it seems that the GOP sees this as some sort of joke. So, how do you reach out to convince the opposition to understand and support Earth Day? In addition, Morocco is attempting to transform the country. Because they are sponsoring Earth Day 2010, they intend to make big changes. In fact, I will be in Rabat, Morocco to cover the transformation. Earth Day Campaign Director, Nate Byer,...

[Podcast] How Do Blue-Dog Dems Run to Win in the...
Throughout the health insurance debates, the schism was not between the GOP and the Democrats. In facts, the split was far more pronounced inside the Democratic Party. However, how do the Democrats establish a unified front if they are anything but unified. In some ways, this seems personified by Arkansas Democrat Blanche Lincoln. Ari Berman wrote a piece forThe NationentitledLincoln Suddenly Stands with Obama. What does she do? What does the White House do?

[Podcast] Air America: New Jack Rice Poll: Americans are...
Americans are finally beginning tounderstandthat most of us will never be rich. We'refaultingObama for not improving the several hundred year old problem of race relations in a year, and for not fixing health care and the economy in the same span of time. Perhaps worst of all, we're going to startpaying morefor complex drinks at Starbucks, after Starbucks suckered us into an understanding of these complex drinks in the first place. Jack Rice is frustrated, but he does see a silver lining.

Jack Rice talked withBruce Schneier, security guru and author of "Schneier on Security", about the recent ramp up in airport security following the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day. Chaos erupted at Newark Liberty International Airport after a man got through security unchecked because he walked through the exit line. Jack Rice knows that there are certain jobs where it is okay to slack off (e.g. McDonald's burger jockey) but the guy who watches the exit line does not have one of those jobs! Certain positions require a bit more concentration and responsibility.
-
[Podcast] Air America: Racial Profiling is not the Answer
Since the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day, many people in the political arena have said that we need to start racially profiling people to keep us safe. But will that really keep us safer? In reality, the fact that the Underwear Bomber bought his ticket in cash, had no luggage, and had his own father tell American that he might be radicalized are bigger clues than his race. Jack Rice says it is more important to profile people's behavior than their race.

[Podcast] Air America: Guns in NBA Locker Room a Bad...
Fellow Washington Wizards Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton are in not water over a recent spat they had in the locker room where they both brandished weapons. Gilbert Arenas has since come out and said that it was a bad idea to bring a gun to the locker room. Really, Gilbert Arenas? It takes you getting in trouble to realize that taking a gun to the work place is a bad idea? I think Arenas needs to redefine what he considers a "bad idea".

George Hamilton Joins the Program. (Audio)
George Hamilton is a very funny man. I'm serious. I wasn't sure what to expect but today he joined me on Air America Radio. And I enjoyed the hell out of it. Yes, he has been acting for 50 years and that in itself is pretty extraordinary. At the same time, he is certainly a man of many talents and strange backgrounds. That is also true. However, I didn't expect the humor. He came on to promote a biographical movie entitled My One and Only, which looks at his life as a child. It stars Renee...

Russian Subs Off U.S. Coast! Bob Amsterdam is Concerned!
A recent report has described Russian submarines off the east coast of the United States. This is very reminiscent of the cold war. We usually don't think of the Russians as international players anymore. However, according the Bob Amsterdam, that would be a mistake. Bob has had to fight against the Russians in courtrooms around the world and has dealt with the likes of the Venezuelens and others who are finding support from the same Russians.

We have been in this fight before. Democrats have been working to reformhealth carefor decades. It was stymied in the 70s and then again in the 90s. Rep. Rob Andrews Talks Healthcare.
As the Democrats fight amongst themselves over healthcare, many wonder if they will find an answer. More wonder about the public option. Rob Andrews of New Jersey joins the program to talk healthcare and whether the Blue Dogs will dominate the agenda. In addition, the Congressman will also address New Jersey corruption.

Do We Really Need Any Nuclear Weapons?
Right now, the Americans have about 6000 nuclear weapons in the arsenal. The Russians have about the same number. President Obama and President Medvedev have been talking about bringing that number down to approximately 1500 each. My question is, why? If we think about "mutually assured destruction", the basis for 50 years of security policy in this country, is it necessary to have more than enough to turn any region in the world into a moonscape? Or is it even moral to possess the ability...

A Surprising and Personal Interview with Leeza Gibbons.
I have to admit that I was very surprised with this interview. Of course, we all know who Leeza Gibbons is. Entertainment Tonight started off an entire genre that has bled into mainstream news, for good and bad. And so I was not sure what to expect with an interview with Leeza. In fact, it is atypical for the kinds of things that I normally do. But I figured, "what the heck!" Leeza had written a book, Take Your Oxygen First. It is about Alzheimer's and her mother's struggles. I found it to...

Cathy Renna is a long time LGBT activist and long serving spokesperson for GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. She's now the Managing Partner of Renna Communications and she'll be attending the White House's commemoration of the Stonewall riots today. However, there is a debate about whether or not the struggle is still necessary. It seems clear to me that discrimination continues and unless one is prepared to accept second-class citizenship, one must continue to fight.

How Did the Wall Street Meltdown Actually Happen?
Gillian Tett, one of the most respected financial journalists in the world, joins me to talk about how the financial meltdown on Wall Street actually started with a small group of JP Morgan bankers and then simply spun out of control. Gillian appeared on The Jack Rice Show on Air America Radio on June 28, 2009.

Jack Rice is a strong believer in walking the walk as well as talking the talk. So, when he talks about the CIA, about the war on terrorism and about law and politics, he knows what he is talking about. Jack is a former CIA Special Agent and Field Operations Officer as well as a former prosecuting attorney andtrial lawyer. He is also a frequent contributor to NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, and other media outlets around the country. As if that weren’t enough, he writes frequently for newspaper and magazines. Rice has a bachelor’s degree in history from San Diego State University, and he also graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School. Jack is pleased to be hosting the Jack Rice Show. Obviously, he spent an enormous amount of time coming up with this highly original title. On the show, Jack shares his unique, opinionated, and very pragmatic approach to the world regarding terrorism, law, politics and government with his very intelligence WCCO
audience. Oh yeah, just to make sure Jack doesn’t get too cocky, he has his wife Marlo and their three lovely girls, or God’s retribution, as Jack like to call them, to keep
him in check.
