We all deserve a bedtime story. A few last words to carry with us into the darkness. I am Adrian Ward, KBE, ES (Alds), 51st Vice Chancellor of the University of Aldergate, invalid, human parasite, and lover of bizarre and macabre fiction. From Lovecraft and Poe to the hidden army of lesser craftsmen of the penny dreadful and ha'penny horrible, I have developed a deep affection for things better left alone. And I would like to share them with you.

D2P1 - Present Fears and Horrible Imaginings

10/15/2017
More
Day 2, Part 1: Present Fears and Horrible Imaginings - I hate being frightened. Such an awful, useless feeling. I retract every kind word I ever spoke about things that go bump in the night; I curse them all and wish them plague, individually and as a class. Uff. Welcome back to Aldergate, eh? My first full day starts with unknown intruders and mysterious letters, and apparently ends with me cowering in my own library. Join me, won't you? Meet me in the frying pan, and we can all jump...

D1P3 - In the Company of Ghosts

10/1/2017
More
Day 1, Part 3: In the Company of Ghosts - Things going bump in the night is the least of my troubles. It's those *other* night-things that worry me - the silent, stealthy things that lurk inside the walls, or in the past, or just behind my eyes. Also murderers, of course. Can't forget them. My beautiful fire is burning low, and I'm running out of candles, and I still can't quite believe I'm back at Aldergate. Still, if I can just make it through tonight ... well, then I can face my *real*...

D1P2 - The Return of the Prodigal

More
Day 1, Part 2: The Return of the Prodigal My first night back at Aldergate started off odd, and isn't getting any less odd as it goes along. The power's still out, and I'm running out of candles - not a happy state for a fellow who's being haunted. Ghosts of the past, ghouls of the present, and that's even before we tackle the issue of freshly-murdered pals. Well, nobody ever said being Vice-Chancellor would be easy. Actually, I seem to recall Baz saying exactly that, but of course Baz...

Introduction and D1P1 - Aldergate Revisited

9/3/2017
More
Introduction / Day 1, Part 1: Aldergate Revisited Welcome to the Aldergate Papers. We begin where it all began: with one of my old friends murdered, and several of my new friends trying to do the same to me. To avoid them - and for other reasons - I have made my triumphal return to dear, strange old Aldergate University. So it begins. Where it ends may be quite a different story - possibly a horror story, possibly for all of us. For now, at least, I'm home at last. For more, visit...

Keeping His Promise, by Algernon Blackwood

3/5/2017
More
Keeping His Promise, by Algernon Blackwood - A ghost story. A typical ghost story, one might almost call it, if one didn't mind being wrong. "Keeping His Promise" is so tangled up in the winding sheets and weighed down by the chains of its ghost-storiness that a careless reader might easily write it off as merely a conventional – if masterfully executed – example of that genre. I, however, would disagree with that assessment. You must decide for yourself. For more, visit TheRealAdrianWard.com

The Damned Thing, by Ambrose Bierce

2/12/2017
More
The Damned Thing, by Ambrose Bierce - This story finds Bierce at the height of his powers of wit, craftsmanship, and pitch-black humor. His grasp of the physical sciences are, perhaps, a horse of a different color; a fact that should detract not at all from your enjoyment of this classic bit of awful Americana. The Hog, by William Hope Hodgson (3 of 3)

12/12/2016
More
The Hog, by William Hope Hodgson (Part 3 of 3) - The thrilling conclusion! And by thrilling, I mean of course a sensible and scientific recounting of how Carnacki the Ghost-Finder came nose-to-snout with an elder monstrosity that, for sheer inhuman awfulness, rivals Lovecraft at his most alienated. Incidentally, I shall neither confirm nor deny being trapped in a well while recording the intro and outro for this episode. I will say only that innattention to proper well-safety protocols...

The Hog, by William Hope Hodgson (Part 2 of 3)

11/27/2016
More
The Hog, by William Hope Hodgson (Part 2 of 3) - Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder returns for more adventures with abominations from beyond human understanding. This episode finds him teetering on the brink of purest cosmic horror; even if he escapes, I doubt he'll ever eat another bacon sandwich. For more, visit TheRealAdrianWard.com

The Hog, by William Hope Hodgson (Part 1 of 3)

11/13/2016
More
The Hog, by William Hope Hodgson (Part 1 of 3) - This story is part of Hodgson's "Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder" series, which I heartily recommend and which are narrated by said Carnacki, your typical occult scientist-about-town. One might (and Lovecraft did) criticize the Carnacki stories for their professional attitude towards cosmic terror. In this story, however, Hodgson has confected a masterwork of the uncanny, the unclean, and the abominable. For more, visit TheRealAdrianWard.com

OLS - 8 - The Repairer of Reputations (Part III)

9/3/2016
More
Episode 8: The Repairer of Reputations (Part 3) ----- From a collection called The King in Yellow, published by Robert W. Chambers in 1895. Beloved of H.P. Lovecraft and highly influential, the spreading tendrils of this story may be seen squirming their way through almost all of the weird fiction and cosmic horror of the past century. I must warn you - this story is not to be taken at face value. For more, visit TheRealAdrianWard.com

OLS - 4 - The Torture Of Hope

7/8/2016
More
Episode 4: The Torture of Hope ----- What could be more fun than the worst moment of someone else's life? Cruel and unusual - this dreadful little story from 1883 is both. Written by a dispossessed French aristocrat, it is a pitch-black celebration of both barbarism and refinement. Enjoy, if you can. I shall not condone the occasional antisemitism - but a little gratuitous sadism never hurt anyone. Want more? Want less? Let me know at: therealadrianward.com
