Sustainable September with Katharine Balson from OzHarvest

In the lead-up to Sustainable September at Fed Square, Sarah Ghassali is joined by Katharine Balson, Victorian Education Coordinator representing OzHarvest at Little Food Festival. OzHarvest is Australia's leading food rescue organisation, and has been in operation since 2004. Their team of volunteers in yellow vans work to rescue surplus food from 457 food businesses throughout Melbourne, delivering more than 320,000 nutritious meals every month to 150 charities supporting those who need it most. NAIDOC Week with Taungurung artist Mick Harding

Harding talks about how he became an artist and how he sees art as being about sharing story – integral to culture, necessary for healing and fundamentally human. He also shares his thoughts on this year’s NAIDOC Week theme ‘Heal Country’ and the current work he's been involved in as deputy chair of the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council. In this interview, Sarah Ghassali is joined by Australian Greens Senator for Victoria and Gunnai Gunditjmara and Djab Wurrung woman Lidia Thorpe, during NAIDOC Week 2021. Thorpe, who became the first Aboriginal person to be elected to Victorian Parliament in 2017, shares her thoughts on NAIDOC Week, its history as a day of protest against colonisation, how we can make it more inclusive and progressive and tips for more ethical allyship for non-Indigenous listeners. Thorpe also shares her views about the importance of the development of a treaty – a legal agreement between Indigenous Australians and the Australian Government – as the next step beyond reconciliation, and the necessity of having diverse voices in politics to enable real societal change.

In this interview, Sarah Ghassali chats to Lujayn Hourani about LGBTQIA+ pride and intersectionality. Lujayn is a Lebanese-Palestinian writer, editor, and arts worker currently living on Wurundjeri Country. Born stateless, they emigrated to Melbourne in 1997. Lujayn is the Communications Director at Road to Refuge NGO and is one of the recipients of the 2020 Wheeler Centre's Next Chapter writers' scheme. You can find his writing in the Australian Poetry Journal, Meanjin, Going Down Swinging, The Lifted Brow and Overland, among others. Open Canvas is a social enterprise that supports artists who have been disadvantaged through homelessness, mental illness or other forms of adversity. Here Dan talks about what inspired him and his wife Jessica to start Open Canvas, and how Open Canvas provides mentoring, art supplies and a platform for artists to showcase their work and gain an income. Change Our Game, an initiative of the Victorian Government assembled a list of leading thinkers who will share their insight, knowledge and experiences and will discuss the critical role community sport plays in levelling the playing field for women and girls and driving positive cultural change. ACMI and Fed Square Present Not So Silent Film Series

Fed Square is partnering with ACMI, Melbourne’s home of gaming, films and screen culture to bring you the outdoor cinema silent film series free on our big screen. But wait, there’s more – each of these films is accompanied by musicians performing live to create a new, original and fantastical soundtrack. Wrap ya ears around that one. From Bluegrass thrumming to rhythmic drumming, Fed Square x ACMI are your pals for a free outdoor cinematic extravaganza this summer. On this week's episode, Phillip Brophy hosts a conversation with musician Phillip Johnston about his process of creating a new score for "The Adventures of Prince Achmed". Phillip Johnston is an American-born saxophonist and composer whose extensive work includes jazz and contemporary composition, and music for film, theatre, and a variety of ensembles. Johnston has composed scores for some classic films from the silent era including Faust (1926), Page of Madness (1926) and short films by Georges Méliès. Philip Brophy is a respected academic, filmmaker, writer and musician. He writes for Frieze, The Wire, Film Comment, and Real Time. After a series of Super 8 shorts with Tsk-Tsk-Tsk in the early ‘80s, and the experimental short feature Salt, Saliva, Sperm & Sweat in 1988, Philip Brophy made his feature directorial debut with Body Melt in 1993, funded by the Australian Film Commission and Film Victoria. He has scored and sound-designed most of his films, and designed the sound and composed music for numerous shorts.
