We're back for another season of the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest podcast! After an extended hiatus with time off for The Mustang Discovery Ride, we'll be bringing in all of the available EQUUS authors, artists and filmmakers to hear more about the work featured in the 2022 EQUUS Film and Arts Fest in Sacramento. From these short WebChats to stories about our partners and sponsors, the podcast will allow us to bring the festival straight to our listeners. In this episode, Julianne takes a quick break to speak with Wren Winfield, director of the Lady Long Rider film featuring Bernice Ende. In her incredible memoir, Lady Long Rider: Alone Across America on Horseback we are introduced to Bernice, a solitary figure with the daunting goal of traveling from Montana to New Mexico in a single ride. At the age of 50, Bernice turned south into the unknown and began her first voyage on the way to becoming a world-class long rider. Since that fateful decision she hasn't looked back. Accompanied by her horses and an exceptional dog named Claire, Ende has logged more than 29,000 miles in the saddle, crisscrossing North America and beyond. Wren, founder of W+E1 Productions, has taken 2 seemingly different career paths in her life: Filmmaker and Healer. With W+E1 she is merging her 2 passions, and literalizing the term 'healing arts ' by making films that she hopes will convey ideas that heal. Wren went to graduate school for filmmaking at San Francisco State University in the late 80's. She won her first two film awards in the 'real world' while still in school. Wren left film school when she scored her first 'real job' in the Industry, as an assistant editor of television commercials. She was one of the first people in San Francisco to be trained on the revolutionary technology of the Avid non-linear editing system. Having this skill during the dawn of the digital age kept her busy, and she eventually became a post-producer for a San Francisco edit house where they finished commercials for Ad Agencies like Hal Riney, Foote, Cone & Belding, J. Walter Thomson, and others. Wren worked on hundreds of commercials including Levi’s, Taco Bell, Old Navy, the Sprint pin-drop shot by Tony Scott, and many more. That was her day job. By night, she worked on her own films. Wren obtained grants for, produced, directed, and edited two award-winning films: Period Piece (1996) and A Pregnant Moment (1999). In 1997, Wren felt a different calling and returned to graduate school for a Master of Science in Chinese Medicine. Candace Carrabus writes from the Lincoln County, Missouri farm she shares with her husband and daughter. A scoliosis diagnosis at age 11 changed her life. In this episode, Lisa and Julianne take a quick break from the series, Conversations with the EQUUS Herd, to speak with Gretchen Lida, contributing writer for Horse Network. Gretchen is an essayist and an equestrian, with work appearing in The Washington Post, Brevity, The Rumpus, The Washington Independent Review of Books, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Plaid Horse Magazine, Horse Nation and many others. She teaches composition in Illinois, lives in Wisconsin, sometimes lives on Nantucket Island and is still a Colorado Native. Gretchen brings a sense of normalcy for "horse people" in this time of uncertainty through her series of articles for Horse Network. From articles on the "less than half-truths" behind the familiar t-shirt saying, "My Horse is My Therapist" to the joys of riding an opinionated mare, her writing draws the reader into a world where being a horse girl and knowing a horse girl is something to be proud of. As she states regarding the benefits of the positive side of the stereotypes involved, "Power. Or, better yet, empowerment. So, to those who quake at the thought of a horse girl, I say, “Good. Be scared.” That’s right. Beware the horse girl. The word beware comes from an old English term that referred to prudence, being wary, or a sense of vigilance. It meant to watch carefully, and with caution. And it is true horse girls are a thing to watch, a thing to be careful of, and a thing to fill you with awe. We Horse Girls are fierce." In this episode, Lisa and Julianne introduce listeners to artist Cindy Galloway and filmmaker Cindy Erkel, along with the Billy and Blaze team. About Cindy Galloway: My love for equines & animals in general began as a young girl, swimming in the creek behind our house and catching carp & tadpoles (my mom had to ask me to return the living aquatic beasts frequently to the creek - I had them in a bucket next to my bed). I consider all living things to have the same importance as humans - I really hate to even kill flies in our horse barn although my horses certainly don’t agree here. On to the equine history....My equestrian activities began with riding english, dabbling in local shows & riding in the Wayne-Dupage Hunt (a drag pack - not fox hunting) club. After some pretty bad wrecks & injuries to match I have jumped ship to enjoy western dressage & moseying’ on the trails with my husband Steve. In this episode, Lisa and Julianne introduce listeners to artist Kody Bundy and filmmakers Karen Sailer and Charles Perry. The panel-style interview was recorded during the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest at the Kentucky Horse Park in December. Artist Kody Bundy creates her artwork with knives and brushes. According to Kody, "Growing up on the rolling prairie of my fathers farm, I had a deep appreciation for horses. When I wasn't spending time riding or just hanging out with them I was drawing them. After high school graduation I put away drawing and began my life working and training horses. During the Western Art Week in 2015 at Great Falls, MT I first observed a Scratchboard artist and was amazed by the detail she could achieve by using the tools she used to create her artwork. The panels I use are layered with white china clay and are airbrushed with either black India Ink or a choice of colored India Inks. Then the fun begins. I use razor blades/ X-acta knives, fiberglass brushes and nibs to remove the ink to engrave my image on the panel. Colored artwork is layered with ink using a paint brush. Imagine seeing a single blade of grass or a whisker in 3-D. Because that is what it is, etched in clay." www.kodybundy.com Karen Sailer, born in 1962, grew up in Germany and has lived in Ibiza, Spain since 1995. When asked when she was 14, what she wanted to be, she replied: veterinarian, textile designer, landscape architect, writer and filmmaker. She studied veterinary medicine, was chief designer of a carpet company in Nepal and then became Ibiza‘s most successful landscape architect. As a modern medicine woman, who has learned from the great wisdom keepers of our earth, she has cultivated her gift of turning deserts into paradises into soul-rejuvenating work with people and horses. Karen Sailer has often shed skin and, with the journey back to her past life as a warrior in 16th century France, opened a new chapter in her eventful life. In this episode, Lisa and Julianne introduce listeners to filmmaker and author Victoria Racimo, equine advocate Jeanne Mirabito and author Susan Abel. The interviews were recorded during the EQUUS Film and Arts Fest at the Kentucky Horse Park in December. Victoria Racimo is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, producer and actress. She wrote, directed and produced the documentary, "One Day", for which she won Best Director in the Equus Film Festival. She wrote two animation specials: "A Toucan Can" starring Jason Alexander and "Pirate Jack" starring Alice Cooper. She was Exec. Producer on the HBO film, "Casi Casi". Victoria was commissioned by the State of Virginia to write and direct the original drama "Journey of Destiny." She also co-wrote "All the King's Horses: The Equestrian Life of Elvis Presley." Victoria is an avid supporter of equine welfare. Our Mims, the equine subject of "One Day," was the 1977 Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. Running in the Calumet colors of devil’s red and blue, she won 5 of 18 races. In 1990, Our Mims was sold as part of Calumet’s dispersal sale. Then in 1997 Jeanne Mirabito found a pensioned Our Mims on a local farm. With the help of a local rescue, Mims came to live with Jeanne Mirabito… and a lifelong friendship developed. Our Mims died of colic complications at the age of 29 in December of 2003 and was buried in Calumet’s equine cemetery. In memory of the great mare and her dear friend, Jeanne Mirabito created Our Mims Retirement Haven so other mares will be cared for once their broodmare careers are over. The Haven became a 501(c)3 on March 8, 2007 (Our Mims’ birthday). Since then, a number of famous and not-so-famous mares have found their way to the Haven.
