We’re talking a Class action investigation, an endo non profit, ending discrimination in the endometriosis community and WWEM’s huge news! On this episode our host, Mariah, is joined by Chelsea from @gettingthebetterofendo on IG. She is a fierce advocate who shares her battle to not only receive an endometriosis diagnosis but proper management. Because in today’s medical system proper management doesn’t exist. We talk about why that is and what needs to change in order for endo warriors to receive the care we deserve. Endometriosis is so often dismissed, shrugged off and thought of as “not that bad”. Chelsea talks about the brutal facts on how endometriosis can be life threatening and the warriors we’ve already lost. We keep saying something has to change but we all know its actually way past due. Chelsea is taking action into her own hands and shares how you can help her efforts! I love this community more than I can express and will always be thankful for the literal lifeline it's become for me. That's why I can't sit back reading messages and having conversations in my DM's with other warriors who haven't had the same experience in our community. Last week I talked to a fellow endo- warrior who was thinking of deleting their IG endo account because they experienced such an onslaught of negativity. And that is devastating!! We need each and everyone of us, working together. The fight against endometriosis misinformation and stigma takes all of us to combat, each of our unique voices and skill. That should be welcomed with open arms, regardless of "what kind of endo advocate you are". We are all so deeply invested in this community and are understandably passionate about the cause. But let's not forget that we are all doing the best with what we know, have access to and what we believe is best for ourselves. This is not to say that the spread of misinformation inside our community is okay, because it isn't. It's dangerous and harmful. But I am here to say that we can approach each other with kindness and empathy. We can correct information and share resources out of genuine concern instead of anger or callus. Yes, it's frustrating that we have to combat such hurdles but it isn't the fault of a fellow endo warrior and we all start somewhere on our advocacy journeys. If you've been on your own endo journey for years now, it can be easy to forget what those first days, months and even years of advocacy and what sharing your story looked like. Most of us aren't medical professionals or endometriosis experts. But we are experts at LVING WITH endometriosis and can speak to our own experiences without wavering. There's still so much we don't know about this disease, the medical system and society don't know about this disease. That's one of the reasons why we need each of our voices, why we need fellow warriors to stay engaged in the community and to continue to share their realties. It's our jobs to make sure we create a safe environment for others to feel that can do exactly that. While working as a nurse AND going through med school, Kimether started to become debilitated by pelvic & back pain along with other symptoms. She was baffled that with her medical background and community of health professionals she was still left wondering what was happening to her body. She speaks to the strange switch from practitioner to patient and how once she was on the exam table it didn't seem to matter that she herself was a medical professional. Kimether brought up so many key points about navigating the medical system and tangible tips on how to do so that I just had to ask her to come back for a part 2. I wish I could say these circumstances only exist for a few unlucky warriors but that’s not true. This is the typical experience of an endometriosis warrior and it’s time the world hears it! In this week's episode you'll meet Jane. She was on her way to gracing grand stages with her opera signing career until endometriosis wreaked havoc inside her body and throughout her life. Jane has been through the gauntlet when it comes to endometriosis "treatments". I use quotes there because many of the "treatments" she was put through are out-dated and ineffective. However, that doesn't stop the doctors from pushing them as if they're promising. Jane is now post- hysterectomy and wants to make it clear that endometriosis is NOT a uterine disease but in fact, a whole body disease that unfortunately remains incurable. *As a reminder a hysterectomy is neither a treatment or cure for endometriosis! It's crucial to understand that endometriosis tissue is NOT the same as the endometrial lining. This is why hysterectomies and hormonal birth control are ineffective treatments. In this episode you will meet Samantha, as a passionate and thankful member of the endo community she shares how social media has helped her advocate for herself on the road to diagnosis. From multiple surgeries, a hysterectomy and hormonal therapy that exasperated Sam's coexisting depression she stood up for herself and the treatment she knows she deserves! But like most endo warriors, she was unable to escape the decade long wait to be believed. When she finally found a doctor that took her seriously she was then faced with the glaring reality that most gynecologist lack the skills and knowledge to manage endometriosis. Fed up with ineffective treatment after ineffective treatment Sam made the difficult and finically hefty decision to pursue excision surgery with an expert in the endo field. She is currently in the process of fundraising for her excision surgery, something many warriors have to do. For years she was bounced back and forth from the GI ( gastroenterologist) to the gynecologist without receiving any answers. Things were happening to her body, the pain was becoming debilitating but it still took her years to hear the words "You have endometriosis". From botched excision to hearing it's because of retrograde menstruation, Jordan has run the endometriosis gauntlet! It wasn't until 2019 that she found out about Nancy's Nook (which could be an entire episode itself) and was able to access the list of excision surgeons. The Best Worst Club- it's the club no one wants to be apart of with some of the best kind of people. From learning the correct definition of endometriosis to how it presents and what questions to ask my doctor, it was all because of the online Endo Community. The cyber endo- warriors work endlessly to correct misinformation and arm warriors with the proper resources needed to navigate the systemic obstacles in our medical system and society. On average it takes 7- 10 years to receive an endometriosis diagnosis and that is not for lack of effort on the warrior's part. This endo statistic is one of the most frequently touted facts because it is disgustingly true and shocking, honestly it's a complete injustice. But what that statement doesn't cover is what it's actually like to live for at least a decade in a body that is being ravaged by a disease with no name. It doesn't explain the strength and self- advocacy it takes to be a patient in a medical system that chooses to dismiss this debilitating disease. And it can't begin to touch on the trauma of being gaslit over and over... and over again. I often find myself saying "How can this be real?" and "I feel like I'm living in a conspiracy against endometriosis warriors.". Because once you've lived it, once you've done a little digging, the systemic problems become glaringly obvious and my activist- heart can't know these things and not attempt to do something. It's mind blowing to me how integral of a part us warriors, the one's suffering with this disease, play in helping each other navigate the gauntlet that is endometriosis. I know that the online endo- community helped me when no doctor could diagnosis me. They helped me avoid ineffective treatments and inadequate doctors which could've made me worse. In a lot of ways I beat many endometriosis statistics because of this community, our community. I hope that by sharing our raw and real realities it will break stigmas, dismantle misinformation and call out the systemic injustices we face. That the Best Worst Club can be an extension of the incredible work all the endo- warriors ahead of made have done. Whether you've never heard of endometriosis, are in the grueling process of getting diagnosed or in the stages of trying to manage it there will be an episode for all of that.
