Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Daniel Arbon, Filmmaker, “Hawker”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Daniel Arbon, is a filmmaker from the United Kingdom who has produced a number of short films entitled, “Ironheart”, “Plated”, “White Feather”, and now, his brand new film entitled, “Hawker”, which he wrote, produced and directed.
This short film tells the true story of Major Lanoe Hawker, who was Britain's first World War 1 "Ace" pilot, and a pioneer of early aviation combat. The movie focuses on the activities of July 25th, 1915, when Hawker, who was at that time a Captain, became the first British pilot to successfully shoot down an enemy aircraft, by mounting a Lewis Gun to the side of his Bristol Scout airplane.
This ambitious and exciting film, which is being released on November 23, was a labour of love for our guest, whose interest in aviation originated when he trained in Aerospace Manufacturing. He went on to be an Officer Cadet at RMA Sandhurst, and after his discharge from the British Army, he began his career in the arts as an actor, graduating from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in 2011. After appearing in 7 films, he turned his attention to writing, producing and directing, and in 2016 he formed his own production company called Middle Realm Productions.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Dr. Audrey Birnbaum, Author, "American Wolf: From Nazi Refugee to American Spy"
11/15/2023
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Dr. Audrey Birnbaum, Author, "American Wolf: From Nazi Refugee to American Spy"
About Harvey's guest:
As many of you know, we have featured a number of authors on our show who’ve written books about surviving the Holocaust.
Today’s guest, Dr. Audrey Birnbaum, has produced a highly compelling and emotionally powerful book that came into existence in a rather unusual way.
When her father, Wolf Schwersenz, was an 11-year old child living with his parents in Nazi Germany, and suffering horrific antisemitic persecution, as all European Jews did after the rise of Hitler, the family overcame every conceivable obstacle and narrowly escaped deportation and death in 1941, by miraculously finding a way to get to America. When Wolf turned 75, he wrote his life story, entitled “The History of My Life’s Struggles”, vividly retelling and preserving his memories of his childhood in Nazi Germany, his family’s death-defying escape from Europe, the arduous and horrific 5-week journey across the Atlantic in an unspeakably ill-equipped and dangerously overcrowded cargo ship, and the sometimes painful and challenging transition to life in America for himself, his parents and his sister, as new immigrants. He also wrote about his fascinating experiences as an intelligence officer in the American Military when he was sent back to East Germany in the 1950’s.
Twelve years after Wolf wrote his life story, and after he passed away in 2018, his daughter, our guest, found her father’s 340 pages of notes in her attic. And she carefully and lovingly converted those notes into a book, entitled "American Wolf: From Nazi Refugee to American Spy", telling her father’s story through HIS voice. It’s a riveting, heart-stopping, true story full of last-minute rescues, near-death encounters, and survival against untold odds. It’s also a story about survival, tenacity, ingenuity, family dynamics, inherited trauma and national identity – and above all, it’s a resounding testament to the triumph of the human spirit.
Our guest is from New York, and she recently retired from a distinguished career as a doctor, specializing in Pediatric Gastro-enterology.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Nicole Henry, Renowned Jazz Vocalist
11/14/2023
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Nicole Henry, Renowned Jazz Vocalist
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Nicole Henry, is a renowned, multiple award-winning jazz singer, whose dynamic, soulful voice, incredible range, impeccable phrasing, and powerful bluesy-gospel emotional delivery, have made her one of the world’s most highly acclaimed vocalists.
In 2002, after being discovered singing in a jazz trio in Miami, the Miami New Times named her the Best Solo Musician of the year. She’s gone on to record 8 spectacular albums including, “The Nearness of You”, “Teach Me Tonight”, “The Very Thought of You”, “Embraceable”, “Summer Sessions”, her latest album, “Time to Love Again”, which has already had 4 top-charting singles - and I can’t resist mentioning one of my all-time favourite albums, “So Good, So Right: Nicole Henry Live”, recorded at the renowned Feinstein’s 54 Below nightclub in New York City.
Four of her albums have landed in the Top 10 on the U.S. Billboard, JazzWeek, UK and Japan jazz charts. Her repertoire ranges from the Great American Songbook, classic and contemporary jazz, pop standards, blues and original material. And get this: in 2013, she received the "Soul Train Award" for "Best Traditional Jazz Performance", winning out over George Benson, Jeffrey Osborne, Chaka Khan, Tony Bennett, Marc Anthony and Terrence Blanchard. She is universally adored by music critics.
The New York Times said, “Every gesture and inflection conveys confidence and mastery, and she creates the sense of being in the presence of a pop-soul superwoman.” And Broadway World said, “So powerful is her charisma, so unique is her personality, so rich is her music, so abandoned is her joy, that you can't watch her without being drawn in." And in my opinion, that’s an understatement.
Our guest’s latest album, entitled, “Time to Love Again”, has been described by Downbeat Magazine as “exuberant, joyous, and immaculately executed.” Her latest single, which is her fourth charting single from the album, is called “Is It a Crime”, and it was recently added as the #1 breakthrough single on the UK Soul Charts.

On television, she’s been in everything from “The Twilight Zone”, “Daniel Boone”, “Bonanza”, “Gunsmoke” and “The Bob Newhart Show”, to “Little House on the Prairie”, “M.A.S.H.”, “Murder She Wrote”, “NCIS”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, and dozens more. She created the unforgettable characters of “Dr. Claire Morton” on “Peyton Place”, “Sister Mary Daniel” on “One Life to Live”, “Liz McVey” on “W-I-O-U”, “Lorna Scarry” in “Law and Order: SVU”, “Patricia Clark” in “9-1-1” – and let’s not forget that classic episode of “Star Trek”, where our guest, who played “Zarabeth”, fulfilled every woman’s dream of having her wicked way with “Mr. Spock”.
And for a while in the 80’s, she co-hosted NBC's “The Today Show”, and she also co-hosted “The Morning Program” on CBS. And we all loved her wonderful, long-running TV documentary series, “Wild About Animals”. She’s been nominated for 5 Emmy Awards and WON an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work in “The Incredible Hulk”. And she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She also wrote an incredibly impactful and emotionally powerful book entitled, “Breaking the Silence”, which is one of the most compelling, insightful and inspirational celebrity memoirs I’ve ever read.
And at the risk of making her blush even more, I can’t resist mentioning this remarkable woman’s extraordinary devotion to community service. She’s been the national spokesperson for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which honored her with a Humanitarian Award. She’s also worked tirelessly as an advocate for mental health, and with a number of vitally important organizations, including the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, SOJOURN, and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. And get this: she was named Outstanding Mother of the Year by the National Mother's Day Committee in Washington, D.C. It doesn’t get much better than that.
And now, moving on to her loving husband, the “leprechaun”, he’s an actor and producer, well known for his work in the movie “Godspell”, the mini-series “Murder One: Diary of a Serial Killer”, and dozens of TV shows including “Murphy Brown”, “Seinfeld”, “Ally McBeal”, “Star Trek Voyager”, “The Brothers Flub”, “The West Wing”, “Shameless”, “The Comeback Kids” and many, many more.
And now, these 2 great talents have joined together in a terrific and very charming movie which they wrote, called “Our (Almost Completely True) Love Story”, in which they play themselves, telling the story of how this initially very unlikely couple met and grew to love each other. The movie, which also features veteran stars Tess Harper, Bernie Kopell, Morgan Fairchild and John Rubenstein, has been conquering film festivals everywhere, and it’s won 9 prestigious awards. After seeing this humorous, poignant and heartwarming movie, I just had to invite our guests on our show.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Debbie Wileman, Renowned Judy Garland Impressionist on her return to Carnegie Hall
10/24/2023
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Debbie Wileman, Renowned Judy Garland Impressionist on her return to Carnegie Hall
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest, Debbie Wileman, making her second appearance on our show, is an incredibly unique and gifted vocalist from England who’s taken the world by storm with her astonishing ability to sing in the exact voice of the legendary Judy Garland – something that, in my opinion, no one else has been able to do with such precision.
Her videos on YouTube and Facebook have gone viral, and she’s had 2 hugely successful concert tours in America, including a triumphant sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall in June of 2022, which was heralded by critics as nothing short of astounding. Earlier this year, I had the great pleasure of attending her concert with a 60-piece symphony orchestra in Peoria, Illinois, and she was spectacular.
When she appeared on our show last year, we were celebrating the release of her first album, entitled “I’m Still Here”, in which she sings, in the voice of Judy Garland, classic modern songs that Judy never lived long enough to record. If you haven’t yet got that album, let me tell you, you should do it right away. Hearing songs like “Yesterday”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Evergreen”, “If He Walked Into my Life” - and yes - even Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”, in Judy’s spectacular voice, miraculously manifested by our guest, simply has to be heard to be believed.
And I’m THRILLED to announce that our guest will be making her highly anticipated return to Carnegie Hall on December 10, 2023 to perform a very special Christmas concert. AND she recently teamed up with singer Brad Knight, who is renowned for his ability to impersonate the voice of Anthony Newley – which is also very difficult to do. They have produced a fabulous video concert featuring duets as Judy Garland and Anthony Newley, as well as solo numbers by each of them. It’s called “Judy and Tony: The Unsung Duets and More. This brand new concert video can be seen free of charge on the DPS Studios UK YouTube channel.

About Harvey's guest:
If you’re a fan of the golden age of Hollywood, this episode of our show is most definitely for you. For over 30 years our guest, Jim Mahoney, was one of Hollywood’s most successful, respected and sought after press agents in show business history.
At the age of 19, he was hired by Howard Strickling, head of publicity at MGM studios, and was assigned to the legendary Clark Gable. In those final years of MGM’s heyday, he also handled publicity for other stars including Debbie Reynolds, Ann Blyth, Howard Keele and Roger Moore.
Then, after a stint with the iconic syndicated newspaper columnist, Harrison Carroll, at the Los Angeles Herald Express, he became a publicist at the prestigious firm of Rogers and Cowan in Hollywood. And after 3 years, he opened his own immensely successful entertainment public relations business, where he acquired the most prestigious list of legendary clients in show business history, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, Jimmy Stewart, Robert Wagner, Peggy Lee, Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, Johnny Carson – and believe me, I’m just scratching the surface.
And when business partner Paul Wasserman joined the firm, they became THE premiere representatives for the greatest music acts of all time, including The Rolling Stones, U2, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Glen Campbell and dozens more. Over the years he developed close friendships with many of his superstar clients, and he worked night and day managing their mercurial and fragile egos, keeping their secrets, suppressing their outrageous and scandalous behaviours, and pulling out all the stops to preserve their all-important public image.
He quickly became an expert not only in communications and media relations, but crisis management.
And NOW he’s written a highly compelling, entertaining and incredibly eye-opening book entitled “Get Mahoney: A Hollywood Insider’s Memoir”, in which he FINALLY tells many of the stories that he’s kept close to the vest all these years. The book provides a unique perspective on the history of Hollywood, and some of its most notorious characters and events. I absolutely loved this book and could not put down until the very last page.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews the son of the Legendary Audrey Hepburn, Sean Hepburn Ferrer
10/5/2023
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with the son of the Legendary Audrey Hepburn, Sean Hepburn Ferrer
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, is the son of one of the most talented, respected, revered and beloved cinematic legends and humanitarians: Audrey Hepburn.
In classic films like “Roman Holiday”, “Sabrina”, “War and Peace”, “Funny Face”, “Love in the Afternoon”, “The Nun’s Story”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, “The Children’s Hour”, “My Fair Lady”, “Wait Until Dark” and many more, Audrey Hepburn dazzled, inspired and enchanted us. And she captivated our hearts with her iconic beauty, vulnerability, sincerity and incomparable empathy, which underscored and motivated everything she did.
She received 5 Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Roman Holiday”. And after her passing, the Academy bestowed the Jean Herscholt Humanitarian Award upon her, posthumously, which our guest accepted on her behalf.
Audrey Hepburn was one of the first people to be an EGOT winner. She won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and 2 Tony Awards. She also won dozens of other awards including 3 BAFTA Awards and 3 Golden Globe Awards, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award. And the American Film Institute named her the third greatest female screen legend of all time. She was the first celebrity to have her own fragrance, called “L’interdit”, created by Givenchy in 1967. But beyond all of that – beyond her iconic beauty, glamour, fashion sense, elegance and warmth, there was Audrey Hepburn the monumentally generous humanitarian. She was the truly the walking definition of “the milk of human kindness”. She never forgot that, immediately after the war, an organization which later became UNICEF, brought food, medicine and clothing to her community in Holland, where she lived as a child during the Nazi occupation.
And so, in the last 6 years of her life, as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, she made numerous trips to the world’s most impoverished and war-torn countries, especially in Africa, advocating passionately and tirelessly on behalf of the children being devasted by disease, famine and genocide. President George Bush Sr. presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her contribution to humanity. And if you go to the UNICEF Headquarters in New York, you will see a beautiful statue called “The Spirit of Audrey”.
Our guest, who is the son of Audrey Hepburn and the iconic actor, director, producer and writer, Mel Ferrer, has had a successful career in the film industry for many years. Shortly after his beloved mother passed away in 1993, he and his brother Luca created he Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, a charity that continues the humanitarian work and honours the legacy of his dear mother. He’s been touring the world with his exhibition, entitled "Intimate Audrey", raising funds for his non-profit organization. In 2003, he released a wonderfully poignant book entitled, “Audrey Hepburn: An Elegant Spirit: A Son Remembers”, and all of his royalties went to the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund. And in 2020, he and his wife Karin, published “Little Audrey's Daydream”, a children's book about his mother’s childhood in Nazi-occupied Europe. Proceeds from the book benefit the European Organisation for Rare Diseases.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with David Fantle & Tom Johnson, Authors, “C’mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guests, David Fantle & Tom Johnson, are co-authors who last appeared on our show to discuss their landmark book entitled, “Hollywood Heyday: 75 Candid Interviews with Golden Age Legends”. The interviews contained in that book were conducted when our guests were mere teenagers living in Minnesota, visiting Hollywood in the hopes of meeting movie stars. And boy, did they ever!
Since then, our guests have gone on to have distinguished careers. David Fantle has been interviewing, writing, and speaking about Hollywood’s Golden Age stars for 45 years, and he’s an adjunct professor of film at Marquette University. Tom Johnson is a former senior editor at Netflix, and he’s written movie reviews and features for many publications including E! Online, Movie-phone, and People magazine. His writing has been recognized with a Minnesota Newspaper Association achievement award and a National Hearst Foundation award.
They’re here today to discuss their brand new book entitled, “C’mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock”. This well-researched and illuminating book chronicles how Judy Garland’s last MGM movie, and her 3rd and final film with co-star Gene Kelly, was conceived, cast and filmed, despite the troubled atmosphere of drama and heartache, and the sometimes overwhelming obstacles and challenges surrounding the production.
The book is jam-packed with little-known and newly uncovered details about the people in front of and behind the cameras, and it examines the enduring legacy of the movie, including some fascinating insights provided by Judy Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft, Gene Kelly’s daughter Kerry Kelly Novick, and other celebrities including Savion Glover, Ben Vereen, Tommy Tune and Michael Finestine.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Rena Lipiner Katz, Author, “A Life Inherited: Unraveling the Trauma of a Second Generation Holocaust Survivor”
9/22/2023
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Rena Lipiner Katz, Author, “A Life Inherited: Unraveling the Trauma of a Second Generation Holocaust Survivor”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Rena Lipiner Katz, has written a compelling and insightful book about a subject that’s near and dear to my heart. It’s a memoir entitled, “A Life Inherited: Unraveling the Trauma of a Second Generation Holocaust Survivor”.
Born in New York and raised by parents whose lives were irrevocably shaped by the trauma they endured during World War 2, she grew up in the shadow of the atrocities of the Holocaust. It’s well known that the terror that Holocaust survivors experienced, delivered to MY generation, an overabundance of fear and anxiety, and a predisposition to feel stress.
Our guest grew up believing that the price of her parents’ survival, and indeed, of her own birth, was a life of sorrow, anxiety and guilt. In her book, she explores how her parents’ childhood trauma as Holocaust victims, fundamentally shaped her emotional and physiological development. She chronicles her journey and her determination to forge a life separate from the legacy of the Holocaust, which she refers to as her “scorched birthright”. But in order to do that, she had to first understand how her vicarious absorption of her parents’ horrific experiences during the war, impacted her world view, her relationships, and the myriad of choices she made as a child, wife and mother.
She shares with us, in a very personal way, what it means to be a 2nd generation Holocaust survivor, and how she unravelled and ultimately healed the trauma of her inherited past, and eventually triumphed over tragedy and despair, and found a life filled with meaning, peace of mind and love.
