Bad Death Notifications Are a Thing: Dr. Barry Young - Bonus Ep 24

11/27/2023
Between his trips criss-crossing the country, I asked Dr. Barry Young to stop in my office and cover an important topic: Death Notifications. It's shocking how little and how poorly this subject has been taught because it directly affects the relationship between a community and its police department. Every death notification leaves a permanent mark on at least two people: the recipient… and the notifier. Warning: this episode contains limited descriptions of suicide and other deaths. Listener discretion is advised. 071 - Getting Them to Talk: Mike Baldwin

11/20/2023
How do you get the bad guy to offer up a confession? It may be part science but it's also largely an art, managing not only the psychology of the suspect but also your own emotions, like pride, anger, disgust, and impatience. For most officers it helps to have someone dialed in who can mentor you and help you find that balance that produces results. Today I'm talking to Mike Baldwin who was a cop from Maricopa County, Arizona for over 20 years. We talk about getting your career advancement stopped by office politics and how Mike reestablished himself as an effective investigator who could get suspects to write confessions. 070.5 - Fog City Miscellany: Jim Dudley

11/13/2023
Today we continue our conversation with Jim Dudley from San Francisco. Jim was involved in an officer involved shooting as a patrolman in which he and his partner were nearly killed. We talk about how that incident has influenced him over the different parts of his career. We discuss how encouraging preparedness in the next generation is a great mission for older and retired officers and then we shift to talking about some of the challenges in modern law enforcement and the city of San Francisco specifically, but we only talk about politics for a few moments, because I also had questions about the movie industry in California and it's interaction and influence on law enforcement. Today we have an officer involved shooting story from San Francisco. Our guest is Jim Dudley, who you might know as the voice of the Policing Matters podcast from Police1.com. Jim is also a retired deputy chief from San Francisco PD and offered to tell his story from when he was a patrol officer in the City by the Bay. 069 - Haunted Headquarters: Shawn Magee

10/30/2023
Officers are asked to go investigate all kinds of things that go bump in the night. Spooky houses, hospitals, funeral homes, churches, and cemeteries are all have to be checked out. But at the department that I serve, there are multiple people who believe our headquarters is haunted. It's a old building where you feel the history, with lots of long dark hallways and questionable lighting. I'll be joking around about ghost stories and the smiles will drop from the faces of professional men and women, who suddenly get very serious and say, "No, I've seen things in that building." I asked for a volunteer to give me an example and multiple people nominated Shawn Magee. He's a former SWAT sergeant turned captain in the Investigative Bureau, who now works overnights in one of the spookiest buildings in our city. 10/16/2023
Marriage in law enforcement seems like a doomed subject sometimes. It's difficult so people talk about it as if it's impossible. But I know several long time married, wise and successful couples where one or both have been cops and they prove that it absolutely is possible to survive an LEO career and keep your marriage. So today we're talking to Erica Davis. Erica married a cop… and lived to tell the tale! Today we're talking again to Jonathon Westbrook, from episode 011. Now, two years later, Jonathon is running for a seat in the US House of Representatives. Because he's making a first time run for congress, I wanted to put his story in front of you, to give you a glimpse into the process, and to talk about what it means for a cop to run for public office. I know a lot of you can follow the same path, and maybe you should, but before you do, please listen to Jonathon talk about the reasons why you should or shouldn't get into politics. Listen to what he says about matters of character and principle and values, because moving from law enforcement to elected office can be a great way to serve but it can also undo you. 067 - Münchausen Managers: Warren Wilson

10/2/2023
Naturally, I think every cop should listen to every episode of Hey Chaplain. But this one… this is really important. It's about leadership and integrity, corruption and gaslighting… it's a about a type of dishonest supervisor who can destroy the culture of a police department and then walk away looking like the only hero. Warren Wilson calls that character a Münchausen Manager and he wrote an article about it for Police1, which is how I found him. Listen to this episode, read Warren's article, and pass this on so that everyone will have the vocabulary to explain the odd behavior we sometimes see. We need 10,000 more first responder chaplains but there's not enough church-trained clergy to recruit those kinds of numbers. So we are going to have to recruit retired first responders! Ward Jenkins is joining us again. I was wanting to do an episode, not specifically on Internal Affairs, but generally about officer integrity. Ward has a good story on that topic and he was also adjacent to the famous Rampart Corruption Scandal in LA over twenty years ago. So Ward can speak specifically about cops throwing away their career, or worse, for short term gain. 065 - The Ultimate Cold Case: J Warner Wallace

9/4/2023
Today we're talking about cold case investigation with J Warner Wallace, he's a famous cold case homicide detective who had his cases featured on television for a decade. Interestingly, he also was once a 35 year old atheist cop who applied his knowledge of solving cold cases to the Bible and then became a Christian. A police officer who's law enforcement skills led him to faith? Now that's an interesting story. The first twenty minutes or so are about cold case investigations: how to build a case to convince a jury, how to work with a DA, and how to prioritize your cases. In the second half of the interview we transition to Jim's personal story of investigating Christianity like a cold case detective and being transformed from vocal atheist to believing Christian. And don't miss what he says at the end of interview about working in a job full of skeptics as a new believer. Again, the religious stuff kicks in about 22 minutes in (and it's really interesting!) but please don't miss one of the most famous cold case detectives in the country talking about his work. 064.5 - After the Shootout: Peter Houlahan, Norco Shootout, Part 2

8/28/2023
The 1980 Norco Shootout was an astonishing bank robbery turned running gun battle turned manhunt turned courtroom drama/circus. And like any critical incident, it had an effect on everyone involved. But throughout this story, I kept asking the same question: how are these officers doing now, 40 years after the deadly event? Author Peter Houlahan was in a unique position to help me answer that question; he had interviewed almost everyone involved. And while he and I are not claiming to be the final word on someone else's mental health, I have a lot of respect for Peter's assessment as a fellow first responder who has been to his own share of traumatic calls, including ones you would know the names of. Here in part two of my interview with Peter, we discuss the effects on the Norco participants both in the first few years and also decades later when he had the chance to speak to them directly for his book. We also talk a bit more about the writing and researching process. 064 - Bank Robbery Shootout: Peter Houlahan

8/21/2023
The Norco shootout is a very modern critical incident, despite happening over 40 years ago. Apart from the lack of cell phones, much of this could happen today. The bank robbery, shootout, and manhunt that happened in Riverside County California in 1980 are important in part because it is one of just a few historical events that directly led to every police car in America having a patrol rifle. It's also important because four decades have passed; this gives us the ability to more accurately reflect on what went wrong, what tools made a difference, and what mistakes did law enforcement leadership make before, during, and after an incident that shot up 32 police cars and a police helicopter. Peter Houlahan is an author and a first responder. He wrote the seminal book on the subject of the Norco shootout, titled Norco '80. Steven Keogh from Scotland Yard has a new book that is one part history, one part modern true crime, with a Sherlock Holmes kind of flavor; it's called Murder Investigation Team: Jack the Ripper. The book reinvestigates the serial murder crime spree of Jack the Ripper and compares and contrasts how that investigation in 1888 was done compared to how Scotland Yard would pursue it today. Steven gives a really satisfying analysis of what happened, which murders were actually committed by the same serial killer, how police leadership got in the way of the investigation, and what motivated Jack the Ripper to kill his victims in the way that he did.
