082 - The Personal Impact of Being a British Police Detective: Simon Osamoh

4/15/2024
Today we're talking to Simon Osamoh, who was a highly decorated detective in the UK investigating organized crime and doing counter-terrorism. If you've ever had to container of liquid confiscated at the airport, then you're familiar with the results of Simon's work. Today he's talking to us about communication and empathy, mentors in law enforcement and how the presence or absence of our fathers affects us. 081.5 - How to Serve First Responders: Ginger Passarelli, Part 2

4/8/2024
This episode is Part Two of my recent conversation with Ginger Passarelli from the Soup Ladies. You'll want to go back and catch Part One, episode 081, where she talked about her recent work with the Border Patrol. This portion of the conversation focuses on serving first responders more generally and I wanted you to hear Ginger's passion to serve and how it's combined with integrity and discipline. We could have more people helping but they need to be doing the right things for the right reasons; helpers of all kinds, including chaplains, need to examine their motivations and be disciplined in how they carry out their work… and I believe Ginger sets an excellent example. So take note of the how's and why's in Ginger's story because, someday, you may given access to serve first responders and if you screw that up, the door might be shut to everyone. 081 - The Soup Ladies Visit Border Patrol: Ginger Passarelli

4/1/2024
Today we have the return of another fan favorite, Ginger Passarelli of the Soup Ladies. For the last couple of years she has been working with the Border Patrol, which is no small feat to bring a non-profit organization into the inner workings of a Federal agency. In this part of the interview Ginger talks specifically about her work to help encourage the Border Patrol agents with love and good food. Ginger called me from an undisclosed border station on the southern border after a long day of cooking for the agents there. 080 - Unbottled and Unburdened: Jeff Keck

3/18/2024
Today we're talking to Captain Jeff Keck, a North Texas police officer with about 25 years of experience. Jeff and I were talking recently about podcast topics that cops really need to hear and he said a phrase that caught my ear. He said, "from my own experience cops shouldn't always bottle things up." My response was, "oooh, that dog'll hunt!" Police officers are encouraged, both directly and indirectly, to bottle up their emotions, and that rarely turns out well. Well, Jeff had some firsthand experience breaking through that barrier, which is especially difficult when you've spent a couple decades convincing yourself that you're "just fine." The Chaplain's Mom Gets a Ticket: Anita Altic - Bonus Ep 29

3/11/2024
One of my favorite personalities, of anyone I know, is my mother, Anita Altic, and I've known since i first started podcasting that she would be a pleasure to listen to. She's funny and a good storyteller, she's intelligent and she has a great voice. All that was missing was a good interaction with law enforcement… which she almost never has. Well, something finally happened and she has agreed to tell her story of the Chaplain's mom getting a ticket in Lawrence, KS. Music is by FSM Team. 079 - The 1933 Kansas City Massacre at Union Station: Terence O'Malley

3/4/2024
Today we're going to take a brief look a the 1933 Kansas City Massacre at Union Station. There is so much to learn by studying criminals and law enforcement from over 90 years ago, and this particular story is a doozy. It touches on half a dozen cities and towns in as many states, involving a couple dozen people, some with personal or criminal connections, and some with no connection at all, who conspire to commit a crime, resulting in a bloody shootout, that fundamentally shapes the modern FBI. 078 - When You're Ready for Help: John Little, Compassion Alliance

2/19/2024
What if I told you that there is an organization that helps first responders find counseling in the area in which they live, with qualified experienced counselors who understand how to help cops and firefighters? And what if told you that this was entirely anonymous and no one from your agency had to know about it? And what if this organization that finds the counselors and vets the counselors and protects your anonymity, will also pay for the counseling? That's what Compassion Alliance does, and I've brought in John Little to talk about it.
