Try: The Podcast

Arts & Culture Podcasts >

Try: The Podcast is about people trying to do stuff that matters to them, whether it’s to make themselves or the world a little bit better. We hope you find something of value in these stories, so that the next time you try to do something, it’s a bit more likely to happen. Life’s pretty awesome - ya just gotta try. Host Chris Wright grew up in Montana, has been working in Google’s marketing department for the past 15 years, is sorta left and right-handed (but not ambidextrous), and currently lives in Colorado with his beautiful wife and 3 boys.

Well Constructed is a nonprofit organization committed to bringing drinking water to as many people as possible. They currently partner with local communities and contractors to build wells and establish well maintenance programs in the Upper East Region of Ghana. I had the pleasure to sit down with four Well Constructed members, three of whom were dialing in from Africa to tell their story. I hope you feel as inspired as I did, and be sure to visit their website, make a donation, or follow...

11 - Try playing with Weezer

1/14/2019
More
When I started the podcast I hadn’t planned on doing an episode all about Weezer, but a handful of folks were interested in the story of how I got to play with and record with the band, and it’s one worth telling! Hope you enjoy listening to me chat with my good friend (and musician) Kevin Punzalan, as we recall how our Weezer recordings took place a decade ago. For reference, here is an NBC interview that is referenced, Good People song ‘overstarting’ (from a band Kev and I were in), and...

In the interview you’ll hear Josh reference the book Better Than Steroids from Dr. Willey, as well as a handful of other philosophies regarding health and well being. Hear his thoughts on...

9 - Try beating cancer and helping others

12/31/2018
More
When I hopped into a Lyft car at the end of a long offsite for work, I didn’t expect to meet someone so inspirational. Eric has faced major health challenges, including cancer, and had recently adopted a puppy named Jocelyn to serve as a support animal of sorts. Despite any hardship, Eric remains focused on his own recovery as well as helping others. I hope you enjoy his positive attitude, humorous stories and words of wisdom as we close out 2018 (maybe one day I’ll hear him sing Living on a...

Finally, we end with a quick discussion about a business Mike and I are trying to get off the ground in 2019.

7 - Try recording a 4 and 7-year-old

12/17/2018
More
My kids find hearing their voice back over a recording is fun, so I interviewed my 7-year-old, and then my 4-year-old. This is pure silliness and there really is no point, although they did create a new holiday regarding flatulent plants (which apparently is a thing - I checked). So that’s something, I guess?

6 - Try Making a Map

12/10/2018
More
Join me on a mountain top in Gopal Shah’s custom built home on this episode of Try: The Podcast as we hear about the history and future of map building. As product lead for Google Earth, building out the map of the future is top of mind for Gopal, and it was interesting to discuss the impact augmented reality could have on the map of the future. Gopal recently gave a TEDx talk in Boulder, has a dog named Decker, and we decided you would enjoy hearing the song Godzilla by Blue Öyster Cult....

Traveling from one country to another is a great experience but immigrating is another story. On today's episode, I talked to a Lyft driver who's from Armenia who immigrated to the US during the heat of the Cold War. We talked about their way of life in Armenia compared to the US and much other stuff. Today, his was a different country and according to him, if you want to experience great hospitality, travel to Armenia.

4 - Try to buy a used Tesla

11/23/2018
More
The first time you sit in a Tesla you’re pretty much sold. That said, if you have a sizeable family (I have 3 boys), you’re more likely to purchase a minivan or SUV. Hear my story of purchasing a 7 passenger used Tesla for way less than you might think, from blues great Kenny Wayne Shepherd (I reference his hit Blue on Black as well as this guitar solo). Lastly, I’m hoping to connect used Tesla sellers with buyers, so hit me up at chris@trythepodcast.com and maybe we can make some...

3 - Try to make and intro-outro

11/23/2018
More
Knowing the truly great podcasts have musical intro’s and outro’s, so I sat down at my piano to attempt to record something. Whatever could go wrong did go wrong (Murphey’s Law), ha! After dealing with customer support issues, my kid’s toy that makes the noise (full Denis Leary album here), I finally created a very mediocre intro/outro. Fortunately, this prompted me to find Julius (our sound engineer), who knew a guy who knew a guy, & the podcast got a much needed upgrade from a quality...

2 - Try to be happy

11/23/2018
More
Over the years I’ve found myself returning to a few resources when it comes to happiness. The first is a TEDx talk by Shawn Achor, the second is this video by Mister Money Mustache, third would be music (I reference Brother Ali’s song Forest Whitaker, and lastly my family and friends (you’ll hear from my Grandma Edna). Hopefully, you smile and feel free to send this to a friend who may be feeling down in the dumps.

Well here it is. I’d been thinking about starting a podcast for some time and decided to pull out a microphone one day. Very excited by this project, and hopefully you find it valuable. As you’ll hear from Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha, ‘It has to start somewhere. It has to start sometime. What better place than here. What better time than now.’ On this pilot episode, Chris talks about why and how he started Try: The Podcast. Link to the song/video.
