INTERVIEW WITH TWO MEMBERS OF THE 'NEW ORLEANS FOUR' WHO HELPED DESEGREGATE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN NEW ORLEANS
8/23/2024
Send us a Text Message.
In this episode of Underground Magnolia Podcast, two Civil Rights pioneers, who are partly responsible for integrating public schools in New Orleans on November 14, 1960, are interviewed.
While most people are familiar with Ruby Bridges, there were three additional unsung heroines, Gail Etienne, Tessie Prevost, and Leona Tate (https://www.leonatatefoundation.org), who should have been acknowledged just the same. Etienne and Prevost will give their take on that historic day and how their legacy carries on in the history of the Civil Rights Movement.
Additionally, film director and producer Diedra Meredith (also known as singer and musician Deepa Soul), is featured in the podcast. She’s mainly responsible for making sure that all four women, collectively known as the "New Orleans Four,” are recognized. Meredith’s upcoming documentary, “The New Orleans Legacy Project,” will explore their stories as well as the role that New Orleans has played in the early days of Civil Rights and beyond.
*Note that this interview was conducted in April 2024, just months before Tessie Prevost's death in July 2024.
