Sustainable Solutions Aaron: Welcome in. As you might know, we gave up reading bios a while ago because we would rather learn about you from you. Can you both briefly share a little about yourselves and how you came to the industry? Terry: For Cassie: Can you provide an overview of the current state of sustainability in the apparel industry? o According to the EPA, the main source of textiles in municipal solid waste (MSW) is discarded clothing, although other smaller sources include furniture, carpets, tires, footwear, and other nondurable goods such as sheets and towels. o 92 million tons of textiles waste is produced every year. Earth.org shares that in America alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste – equivalent to 85% of all textiles – end up in landfills on a yearly basis. O The good: We’re starting to see so many companies make progress: Marine Layer, Everywhere Apparel, Living Ink (making ink out of algae), Allmade, S&S’s Giveback Box program, etc. Aaron: For Gary: From your perspective, what are some common environmental challenges faced by apparel decorators? There are three areas of concern for decorators: The manufacturing process and this includes requirements such as air permits, wastewater discharges, hazardous waste management and OSHA compliance. The input materials being used and this includes ensuring that customer guidelines are being met with respect to the ingredients. The recent bans and proposed bans on certain chemicals are having a greater influence on the choice of materials. The finished product and this includes the substrate and the ultimate fate of the finished product. Terry: For Both: What are some practical steps that apparel decorators can take to reduce their environmental impact without major overhauls? O There are the typical things like replacing all your lightbulbs, recycling and/or reusing boxes and packaging materials, implementing low-flow toilets and sinks, etc. I’ve seen other shops reuse and repurpose their old screens. But shops should also be aware of what products they’re buying and selling to their customers (are they recycled cotton/poly); also notify customers...

Why the sudden interest from that sector? The Short History of DTF Printing Techniques

2/9/2024
We turn the tables on Terry this week and interview him about his journey into the realm of DTF (Direct to Film) printing. Following last week's show with Johnny Shell, we know there are many unanswered questions about DTF Printing. Terry takes us on his journey from his initial unfamiliarity to becoming adept with DTF due to his expertise with DTG equipment. Terry shares insights into the reasons driving the adoption of DTF, addressing customer resistance, tackling misinformation, and navigating the learning curve involved in mastering DTF decoration. We will discuss technical aspects, including the optimal printing environment, application techniques for adhesive powder, and safety considerations. Join them for an enlightening conversation shedding light on Terry's evolution from a novice to an expert in the field of DTF printing. Use the subject line “Weekly News.” Dad Joke Terry: Not all math jokes are terrible Only SUM What We've Learned about DTF (Direct to Film) Why DTF? It’s a very simple decoration method Easy to apply and almost any substrate You can apply in a temperature range of 275-325 so manmade fabrics not an issue No dye migration Is there customer resistance to DTF garments? Most of the resistance comes from decorators, not customers Email from a customer this week Why is there so much misinformation on the internet and at shows? Band-Aids Wanting to appear as an expert. Ulterior motives What’s a realistic learning curve to be a DTF decorator? 30-90 days Talk to us about proper environment. Just like DTG, 40% humidity and normal office temperature How does DTF work on a DTG printer? Why would someone go this direction? Most machines have a DTF option that reverses the print order and backs off on the amount of ink layed down Nothing to buy other than film and adhesive. You use the same ink for both processes. Why is there white and black adhesive powder? Band-Aid because of process errors What causes blotches in the image after it’s applied? Moisture on your film. The film coating is made to attract water based ink. It also attracts moisture from the air. What’s the best way to apply DTF transfers? Depending on the fabric, press for 15 seconds at medium pressure Peel and press a second time for 5 seconds, but use fabric or Pellon to soften the image. Is adhesive powder and vapor safe? The adhesive powder – more finely ground but the same adhesive screen printers have been using for decades Fumes can cause eye, skin or respiratory irritation or potentially an allergic reaction for some people Not the great evil that some make it out to be OEKO-TEX Certified Use common sense I was going to ask you about ways to add adhesive and cure single sheet transfers, but we’ll have to wait for the Secret Sauce today for that answer. https://www.youtube.com/embed/4NBhT_125uM?si=ygKXIHmYbleXRlxT The Secret Sauce We serve up bite-sized tips for our #regulators to instantly spice up their deco...

Share a little bit about you, your journey with Adobe, and how you interact with the print and garment decorating industry. Aaron: I think the thing on everyone’s mind whether it be our marketing, our business operations, or our graphics is AI. Can you provide more insights into how AI technology has been historically used in design and print workflows and how it's evolving today? Aaron: Based on your insight there, I think many of us are worried about the use of AI with Graphics, the ethics of it, etc. How is Adobe approaching that part of AI? Aaron: You and I had a chance to catch up briefly earlier this week and one thing we discussed was how the customers for our products are changing. It used to be that our customer showed up with a terrible sketch on a napkin and wanted us to put that on a shirt with a few colors, to the customers today creating all sorts of amazing full-color graphics and images and they want to be part of the creation process. How is Adobe bridging that gap from a professional designer to an online content creator? Aaron: Another area I have seen and been able to be around is the templated type of on-demand products. There is a level of customization available, yet Adobe’s tools make it easy to maintain control of the final artwork guaranteeing a great-looking product. For example, a complex professionally designed piece is done in Illustrator and or Photoshop, and then it gets personalized onsite and an event. How does Adobe enhance that workflow without requiring extensive design skills? Aaron: How does Adobe's PDF technology enhance workflow efficiency for garment and product printers? Aaron: With the ability to edit PDFs with Adobe tools, can you explain how this feature works and its benefits? Aaron: If people are interested in learning more about the tools available to them from Adobe, and being a part of the Adobe community,

Terry: Let’s start by explaining niche markets and why these markets are important. Aaron: Having Dane here, I want to dive right into a niche related to AI. I’d like to ask you Dane, how are you seeing people utilize AI artwork to create a niche for themselves? Aaron: Pet Lovers: Customized pet-themed apparel, accessories, and home decor for passionate pet owners. Terry: Local Sports Teams: Design and sell merchandise for local sports teams, schools, and fan clubs. AI Art Tools Aaron: Sustainability Enthusiasts: Eco-friendly and sustainable apparel and products for environmentally conscious consumers. And it might not be eco-friendly sayings, and even what some might consider greenwashing. But focusing their business on sustainability. And many times that goes hand in hand with ethically produced products. Many years ago we had Reagan from Fed By Threads on the show and he was what I would consider an early adopter of this model. Terry: Completely Unique Niche Markets Aaron: Art and Creativity: Art-inspired merchandise, custom art prints, and creative tools for artists and art lovers. Use the subject line “Weekly News.” https://youtu.be/BgKsz79DPn0 Dad Joke Aaron: Did you know that I used to work for the Circus? I was a human cannon ball… Until they fired me. 10 Things from 2023 Terry: I’d like to see, I expect to see, trade shows seek their new level. So what does that mean? Trade shows won’t return exactly as before. For good or for bad (if you run a trade show), many typical exhibitors at all or most shows were very successful during COVID without the costs of trade shows. Many of these companies are weighing how much of this expense they’re willing to take on again. This is a conversation or debate taking place at manufacturers, dealers and distributors throughout the industry. Aaron: Mid Range Heat Press. Going from 16×20 to the next level is a massive cost jump. How can you make a mid range size more viable? A 30 x 40 or a 40 x 60 that can still be affordable on the average credit card? Terry: I miss ThreadX (by Printing United) but apparently not financially viable so likely gone for the time being. I’d like to see an online version of ThreadX that is not tied into a business or organization with a profit agenda. I would miss the personal interaction but the speakers were awesome, and the attendee mix as well. Option 2, tie a live event to the Expo in Atlanta either a day or two before or after. This is an idea we’ve kicked around on past shows. Aaron: More Balance. Now back to the high level woo woo stuff that you know and love from me. I get to work with a lot of business owners, and I see us all really siloing our lives. There is the business life about making money. There is the home life, the community. I’d like to see people integrate this more and that starts by really defining our purpose and why. Then operating from that space centrally. Terry: I’m looking forward to innovation and clarity in DTF printing. By innovation, I’m referring to things like single sheet powder application devices. There are some devices but to my knowledge none that will coat a 16×20 sheet yet. By clarity I mean things like, what’s the truth about the adhesive powder? And in general just a better understanding of proper methods and techniques. Aaron: Less Competition. OK, one more woo-woo thing. I know business is set up as a thing you have to win, more market share, and beat the other guy. But I think this drags us away from an abundance mentality that I have found to be crucial to success. We need partnerships, we need collaboration,

Terry: When we talked about this show you said “sustainability and how in the workflow it might power sales” And you mentioned you might be turning the tables and asking the #Regulators questions. What questions do you have for them? Aaron: We all know that the equipment we use to create the product we create has a life cycle. Whether it’s because it is time to upgrade our capacity or just move forward. I think in our part of the industry some of these machines just go sit in storage or are put into the trash. What are the alternatives? Terry: We know that you work with equipment distributors, like the company I work for Equipment Zone which is a distributor of Epson products. How can we make a commitment to sustainability by working with you? Aaron: Looking ahead, what trends or developments do you foresee in sustainability within the printing industry? What's the best song to play while cooking a turkey? It’s all about that baste… ‘bout that baste… Scott Fresener Aaron: Welcome to the show Scott. Terry: Let’s talk about your brainchild, FastFilms separation software. First, for our younger listeners, what is it? And second, how did that software come to be? Aaron: By the time I got to US Screen your hands-on screen printing classes were well underway. Let’s talk about the evolution of that concept, and how you saw that need in the industry. Terry: After the break let’s talk about the beginnings of DTG and white ink, and of course what you’re doing these days. Aaron: You reinvented US Screen while Terry and I worked there. What made you believe Direct-to-Garment printing would be so revolutionary? Talk to us about the T-Jet. Terry: White ink took DTG printing from a novelty on white shirts to a viable decorating option. Let’s talk about white ink for DTG. Aaron: You’ve been responsible for some earth-shattering developments in our industry from separation software to DTG printing. Tell us your prediction for what’s next. Terry: I’m pretty sure US Screen was one of the few businesses with a soundproof band room. Talk to us about what you’re doing in your spare time now. Reach out to Scott at scott@tbiznetwork.com.
