ALLIED GENETIC RESOURCES The Allied approach combines consistent genetic value improvement with services to reward producers for making better cattle. Allied services are designed primarily for commercial customer success with practical genetic solutions applied to your specific production system needs. The seedstock industry’s only purpose is to drive genetic change in the commercial cattle industry by breeding and developing bulls with balanced traits and bred-in profit drivers that add value at the ranch and beyond. Their efforts and dedication are vital to an industry challenged with producing a product that must excel in varying environments, with differing management practices, balanced with maternal and terminal requirements, all while performing in the feedlot and consistently delivering an enjoyable eating experience for the consumer. Not an easy job to say the least. You’ve worked for years, in some cases for generations, at constant genetic improvement. It would be hard to measure the time and money you’ve invested in genetics to ensure your commercial customers can confidently buy the bulls you produce each year. But that alone is not enough to differentiate you from your competition. In today’s ever-increasingly competitive seedstock business, you’ve got to offer customer service after the sale, including marketing options for your bull customers to capture the value they’ve invested in from your program. That’s where Allied can deliver solutions… Allied values its relationship with Superior Livestock Auction, providing its bull customers with greater access to the nation’s largest buyer base and the risk management of forward contracting. Clint Berry has worked with buyers and sellers of high-quality cattle for more than a decade, building a solid reputation with ranchers and feeders. This Is How To Treat Pinkeye In Cattle

11/19/2023

We have lots of news you need to hear, cattle sale updates, cattle for sale, and sale reports, and this week’s top hand. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 159 DETAILS Some say that Pinkeye is just a necessary evil that we have to face in the cattle business, or is it? We are joined again today by Dr. Jeff Sarchet with Zoetis to discuss how to treat pinkeye. There are many options from the vaccine to treating the injected eye. We share out winner of the Ranch It Up Radio Show Top Hand along with a market recap and updates from Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange and the Producers Livestock Marketing Association and cattle for sale on LivestockMarket.com. Plus, the weekly market recap with Kirk Donsbach with Stone X Financial, Inc. We have it all for you in this jam-packed episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show! As always Tigger & BEC and the Ranch It Up crew dive into the latest agriculture news, rodeo action not to miss, and cover the cattle markets. WHAT CAUSES PINKEYE IN CATTLE Preventing traditional summer pinkeye in cattle involves eliminating the many eye irritations listed in this report. Identifying and taking steps to resolve physical hazards in your operation, including face fly control, may be more effective than pinkeye vaccinations. Offer protection from the sunlight by providing adequately sized shade and allow cattle to graze at night when face flies are not active. Make sure mineral consumption is adequate months before the pinkeye season. Selenium, copper, and zinc are vital for maintaining eye health. Be vigilant and immediately isolate the first case of pinkeye. Seek a veterinary diagnosis. Develop a treatment and prevention plan with input from your veterinarian. WHAT IS PINKEYE The scientific name for pinkeye is infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). It is a disease of cornea (eye surface) and the conjunctiva (eyelids). IBK is reported as the most common cause of eye disease in all breeding females and calves more than three weeks old. It is second only to calf scours, the most prevalent condition affecting pre-weaned calves (Dewell). According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the first clinical signs of any eye irritation, including IBK, is often tearing, tear staining, and eyelid squinting. Tearing often increases as the pinkeye progresses. IBK may suddenly appear as an opaque spot on the cornea, making early recognition difficult. Conjunctivitis is sometimes seen but not in every case. Corneal ulceration may occur as pinkeye progresses. Some cases of IBK spontaneously resolve. Others result in severe damage to the cornea and blindness. IBK is costly and labor intense to treat. Suffering cattle have decreased appetite because of pain or decreased vision and the inability to locate food and water. Cattle with scarred or ‘blue’ eyes with prolapsed corneas, or blind cattle have reduced value at the market. ASSOCIATED PINKEYE FACTORS Normal eyes have adequate defense mechanisms to prevent infection and subsequent corneal ulceration. Any form of eye irritation allows pathogens to penetrate the cornea: Physical trauma from aggression between animals, overcrowded bunks, self-feeders; handling during transport; abrasive bedding, grazing close to field margins where thorns, barbed wire and tufts of dry stalks of grass can scratch the cornea; rust/corrosion and the sharp edges from galvanized handling systems and penning; tail switching especially when crowded together under shade Blowing dust and sand, weed seeds/chaff Face flies UV irradiation (bright sunlight) causes cell damage to the conjunctiva and cornea Chemical...

This Is How Much Crop Land Is Selling For At Auction

11/10/2023
EPISODE 2 DETAILS Cropland Auction Sets Fresh Record in North Dakota PIFERS AUCTION AND REALTY According to a post on Facebook, on November 1, Pifer's Auctioneers hosted a live and online land auction. The farm featured 320 acres of highly-productive land in Pembina County, N.D. That's the very northeastern corner of the state in the Red River Valley. The auction house says the land sold for $17,500 per deeded acre to a family farm operation. It says that shattered the all-time high for North Dakota cropland. Roughly 30 bidders were on hand for the auction. The Pifer team says that area is known to be tight where very few farms ever get exposed to the market. Another of the enticements comes from the crop rotations in that region. Farms typically grow potatoes, sugar beets, wheat, corn, barley and soybeans. The ability to produce sugar beets and potatoes on medium to heavier loam soil, without irrigation, was a strong draw. One of our listeners from Missouri texted us in regard to last week's program. We featured Doug Bichler from Bichler Simmentals in South Central North Dakota. He already had a very successful seedstock operation supplying Simmental and SimAngus Genetics. His accident in 2017 caused him and his family to re-evaluate how they were running their cattle, the efficiency of bloodlines, and the predictability of the bulls being offered for sale each year. This caused the operation to transition from a winter and spring calving cowherd to a summer calving cowherd. They changed from selling Spring Yearling Bulls each February to selling Virgin Long Yearling Bulls in November. David from Missouri was wondering how to care for these fall yearling bulls and how it is different from caring for spring yearling bulls. We bring Doug to answer more questions about managing new herd sire prospects. We start a new segment where you, our listeners get to nominate a person, farm/ranch, business, product, horse, dog, etc, that does not matter for our weekly Ranch It Up Radio Show Top Hand. Today, we relieve our very first winner. Not to mention the weekly market recap with Kirk Donsbach with Stone X Financial, Inc. We have it all for you in this jam-packed episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show! As always Tigger & BEC and the Ranch It Up crew dive into the latest agriculture news, rodeo action not to miss, and cover the cattle markets. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR NEW HERD SIRE We spend all that time trying to find the perfect bull for our operation. And now congratulations! You found him and got him purchased in your price range. Now what? Learn how to manage your new herd sires and how to get them through the cold months on into breeding season. BICHLER SIMMENTALS The Program: The Bichler Simmentals ranch is owned and operated by Doug and Maria Bichler, representing the third generation to farm the land and live on the homestead. Since the farm’s inception in 1920, the Bichler family has strived to care for the land and their animals to the best of their ability. And, in 2022 that core value has never wavered. The program has grown significantly in the past 17 years. Since they began their production sale in 2005, they have been able to not only increase the number of bulls and females offered but also create more genetic and phenotypic consistent cattle. They use AI and embryo transfer extensively to ensure they are propagating the best genetics. The ranch is located in south central North Dakota and consists of 250 mother cows which are comprised of both registered and commercial females. Commercial females are utilized in the ET program. The Philosophy: Their philosophy is that quality is always centered around the cowherd. This is why they cull heavily for not only performance and genetics but for relevant traits important to customers such as disposition, udder quality, and structural soundness. Any females failing to meet these requirements are either moved into the recipient herd or are simply culled. The Bichler family believes the best-performing cattle are moderately framed, easy fleshing, and deep-bodied and you will see this in the cattle they produce. They flush superior cows in the herd to produce superior females which in turn are mated to produce bulls for the...

Can You Build A Foundation Cowherd From Scratch? Absolutely

10/5/2023
EPISODE 153 DETAILS We all want to improve our genetics and add more potential value to our cowherd. But taking a commercial herd and converting it into a viable seedstock operation is no easy task. That is exactly what one North Dakota producer did. Brad Zimmerman started using Purebred Gelbvieh bulls to inject hybrid vigor into his calf crop. Seeing the results and following his love for seedstock, he made the decision to convert his cowherd to a foundation herd of Gelbveh and Balancer. He is extremely proud of the fact that all of his cows have the Zimmerman prefix. He can trace the lineage all the way to the beginning and how his herd is backed by performance and consistent quality. We have some of the most recent news on Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (MCOOL), the story of a high school in Oklahoma that added meat processing to its curriculum and an update of the new sires being offered from Select Sires! GELBVIEH AND BALANCER Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business. Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences (EPDs). Balancer animals are 25 to 75 percent Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects of the beef industry including commercial cow/calf operations and on the rail. Who Makes Change Happen In The Beef Business? We Find Out!

10/1/2023
EPISODE 152 DETAILS Whose job is it to change the cattle industry. Is it the cow-calf man, who raises the majority of the beef? Is it the seedstock producer who raises the genetics that we need? Is it the stocker, who gets the calves on feed? Is it the feed yard to get the cattle to finish? Is it the packer who processes and harvests the beef? In reality, it is all of these segments coming together to make the changes we need in the cattle business. However, it is the seedstock producer who can influence that change probably more than any of those aforementioned segments. We had a great sit-down conversation with Steve Koester, the immediate past president of the Red Angus Association of America and Co-Owner and Manager of Koester Red Angus. We have the news from cow country that you need to hear. Plus feeder calf sale reports are on fire!!! KOESTER RED ANGUS Our vision for the future...Rooted in heritage and stewardship while envisioning tomorrow. We look beyond the current season and market, seeking fresh genetics that will add value to our customers’ calves and cowherds for generations into the future. We know – and accept the responsibility – that our decisions today impact the livelihood of the cattlemen who trust our genetics. All of our registered Red Angus Cows and heifers calve in August and September on pasture, where we weigh and tag daily. We also udder and disposition score each dam as she calves. All of our cows are DNA tested and display genomically enhanced EPDs which predicts their potential to the highest level possible. In early November, we synchronize, AI and sort into breeding groups for a 45-day breeding season. Matings are done which enhance our customers’ profitability to the best of our ability. We wean calves in March and collect DNA samples for GGP testing. We also weigh and body condition score the cows as well as record her foot scores. The heifers are summered on pasture with only protein block supplements. We run the bulls on grass with just enough supplement to maintain their development and prepare them for yearling carcass and data collection. They are not put on a feed test. The Sale Bulls come into the lot in late August where we develop them as long yearlings for the sale in March, held in conjunction with Leland Red Angus at their ranch near Sidney, Montana. In addition to genomically enhanced EPDs on the Sale Bulls, we continually monitor performance, feet, and disposition, culling accordingly until only the highest profitability bulls are maintained for sale. We welcome guests to visit our family operation during any season or phase of production. COW COUNTRY NEWS USDA Tests “Raised Without Antibiotics” Beef Claim. RED ANGUS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Red Angus females are in high demand from commercial producers far and wide. Their longevity, fertility, adaptability, and efficiency, coupled with their good disposition, make them the ideal cow for today’s producers. Data from Superior Livestock has shown that Red Angus females command up to $17/cwt more than females of all other breed types, which solidifies the fact that Red Angus cows can position your farm or ranch to thrive in today’s volatile markets. Additional data¹ from Superior Livestock show that bred Red Angus heifers command an average of $150 more per head than all other breed types ($140 more than Angus-sired, $133 more than English x Continental and $177 more than Brahman-influenced bred heifers). As always Tigger & BEC and the Ranch It Up crew dive into the latest agriculture news, rodeo action not to miss, and cover the cattle markets. ALLIED FEEDING PARTNERS Allied Feeding Partners (AFP) was formed by some of the nation's top seedstock producers who trust in the value of feeder cattle sired by their genetics & are dedicated to customer service after the sale. The primary goals of AFP are to build stronger, long-term relationships with bull customers, ensure competition on sale day when customers are marketing their calves, and capture & share feedlot/harvest data with our customers to make better bull selection decisions & to utilize in future years when marketing their calves. Data past the ranch of origin is typically missing for most cattlemen, but AFP provides our customers with the chance to leverage that data for their long-term benefit. Make no mistake...AFP plans to make money feeding cattle, this is not a charity. But our primary objective is to enhance the relationship between our commercial bull customers & our seedstock partners. By sharing critical performance, health & carcass data through harvest, customers of AFP have the insight to streamline their genetic selection decisions & the ability to build a stronger reputation with potential buyers of their cattle by providing them with past results. This philosophy works in all forms of marketing but is most evident when marketed with our Rep Team on Superior Livestock Auction. In general, when a buyer purchases feeder cattle that perform well, they are not incentivized to share that data with the seller for fear of increasing the price of the cattle in future years. But AFP's goals are to assist our bull customers in their own profitability, with the trust of that dedication being rewarded with long-term relationships between our seedstock suppliers & our customers. Current cattle prices, in our opinion are rather attractive. Ok, let’ be honest. I don’t know if they are at a level where your outfit is making money, but at ours, they are ringing the bell! And ringing the bell over and over again. But it does not matter how good the prices are if we don’t market our product to perspective buyers. The days of just “expecting” to get the top dollar the day of the sale are over! We have to do more to ensure the “”Top Dollar”! There are many different options one has and why not take advantage of as many as possible. Moreover, know the expenses of selling those drafts of calves. Today, we look at a marketing option that could be in addition to and even replace traditional forms of selling livestock. We hear each week from the crew from Livestock Market, but have you looked into what is happening for sellers posting their livestock on the Livestock Market website. We are here to tell you it is VERY SUCCESSFUL! We dive into how to list cattle privately or take advantage of an online auction through Livestock Market. Don’t forget we have the latest news and market recaps that can make all the difference in the world on your outfit.
