The Career Dad Show

Business & Economics Podcasts

Hi, I'm Dan Reed, and welcome to The Career Dad Show: the podcast for www.careerdad.co.uk. This show is all about supporting modern-day dads. Dads who are working hard for a successful, rewarding career... but not at the expense of their family. Dads who want to win in the boardroom, but also take the kids to school. Dads who don't want to - nor believe they should have to - make a binary choice between getting promoted, or being a parent. Work. Family. Balance. Throughout these episodes I talk one-on-one with (mostly) dads about topics close to their hearts. In Episode 1 I talk to Ashley about paternity leave, co-sleeping and... bin liners. I'll say no more. In future episodes the topics range from David, who completely changed careers to find his balance, to James, who as a pilot for Emirates literally lives the high-life, but often finds himself far away from home. Alone. You'll also meet Andrew, who talks to me about the death of his baby daughter Alexandra when she was just 30 hours old. I'm not going to lie, that was a tough episode to record and I'm sure a tough episode to listen to... although I wasn't expecting to laugh as much as I did (or at all, really). Also, it's just one more way Andrew - and his wife Claire - continue to keep Alexandra's memory alive. So that's it, in a nutshell. I hope you enjoy the show, and please do rate and comment (it really does help!)

Dad on SPL, with Joe Young

1/20/2020
Shared Parental Leave - where the mum is able to give up some of her maternity leave to her partner - became a legal right in 2015. In theory, this made it much easier for dads to take additional leave from work and spend time with their child. 5 years on, and the take-up rate is pretty low. Like, 2% low. So if dads want to spend more time with their kids (hint: they do), and the law has changed to allow this (it has), and employers are offering it (they are)... what's the problem? In this...
