MPP014 – Understanding the Crypto Currency Market with Mike Grantis

2/1/2021
https://youtu.be/cz9fNfls4tw Interview with Mike Grantis of Satstreet In episode 14, we cover what Crypto Currency is and what is happening to the market in the early parts of 2021. Our guest, Mike Grantis, from Satstreet and Cryptoweekly walks us through the current environment and formulated a few predictions. Here are some of the highlights: 00:24: Introduction 03:10: What is Crypto 07:40: Direction of the blockchain technology 14:35: Future companies dominating the technology 20:45: What causes movement in Bitcoin value 31:23: Long terms risks of investing in bitcoin 37:08: Recommended resources and contact information Transcript Intro: Welcome to the Mad Profit Podcast where we interview active investors entrepreneurs and experts who left corporate jobs to buy or start successful ventures and live life on their own terms.Listen to their stories, learn from their experiences and heed their advice so you too can create Mad Profits and the life you've always wanted and now here's your host Laurent Truc. Laurent: All right welcome back everybody. This is Laurent Truc and we're back on with Mike Grantis who we had as a guest before on the Mad Profit Podcast. Mike at the time was telling us about bartering as an old/new way of doing business but Mike, I invited you back on because you've had a lot of transition within your life but you are also a huge passionate person when it comes to crypto. I've not seen the crypto space on fire as it is right now for years so I thought it'd be a great opportunity to bring you on and have you talk a little bit about what you know, what you're doing, how this space is going and how we should be buckling or pulling the chute. Where do we stand so thanks for coming on I really appreciate it? Mike: hey man I appreciate you having me thank you so much. It’s always a pleasure chatting with you and looking forward to a good conversation. Laurent: absolutely. So, can you remind us a little bit about your background and what brings you through this journey to us here today? Mike: Sure yeah. Right now, I'm working with a company called Satstreet. We're an over-the-counter trading desk and we work specifically with high net-worth individuals ultra-high net worth and now starting to do quite a bit of work on the corporate side helping private corporations get access to bitcoin and other digital currencies within their treasury. So fairly new company, only seven months old but actually just yesterday cracked the 100-million-dollar mark in trading volumes so a big accomplishment for the team. Crazy as you said, right yeah, it's pretty nuts and you know as you said the space is on fire. I think just judging from my lens I think there's still a lot of upside potential and even though we've seen the price grow quite substantially over the past few months I still think there's quite a bit of upside and not just in the short term but also if we talk broadly five to ten years down the road. Cryptocurrency is here to stay. Bitcoin is here to stay and the genie's out of the bottle. Now it's just about maximizing that opportunity that we have in front of us and really taking the bull by the horns. Laurent: Very cool can you give us a one-minute overview? I mean I think most people know what crypto is theoretically but it just had such a roller coaster ride from inception to its peak to its drop to a new peak. Can you give us a little bit of a history lesson of why now is such an interesting time?Mike: yeah, sure and what I would say is a lot of people conflate cryptocurrency with bitcoin. Bitcoin is the first ever cryptocurrency and it's really the majority of the cryptocurrency market right now. It holds about 70% dominance over the entire crypto market but there are thousands of different companies that are building on top of this base layer protocol that we call the blockchain. Now the blockchain is kind of like the next evolution of the internet.

MPP013 – Why Internet Businesses Should Consider Barter Networks to Sell Their Products & Services with Mike Grantis

8/20/2020
https://youtu.be/s_LgERBKTUg Interview with Mike Grantis, Sr. Director Business Development at Barterpay.ca In Episode 13 of the Mad Profit Podcast, we interview Mike Grantis who is the Senior Director of Business Development at Barterpay.ca. He explains the opportunity of leveraging the oldest form of trade to help businesses improve profitability in today's marketplace. Mike provides some great examples of businesses that have succeeded in offloading their stock or using excess capacity. Businesses of all sizes can leverage this community to help improve their bottom line Transcript Laurent : Hey everybody Laurent Truc here from the mad profit podcast welcome back today we have a special guest Mike Grantis from barterpay.ca this is a bit of a different interview than what I've done in the past barter payday ca is a very interesting new community that's being created and it's been around now for a couple of years that allows members to barter with other members and I see a very unique opportunity for even internet businesses to be able to put excess product or even use up excess capacity if they have a service business and I think it's a really interesting way to continue to sell and even diversify your sales. Mike is a terrific guy and it was a great interview so dive in and hopefully you'll find value in it thank you. Intro : welcome to the mad profit podcast where we interview active investors entrepreneurs and experts who left corporate jobs to buy or start successful ventures and live life on their own terms listen to their stories learn from their experiences and heed their advice so you too can create mad profits and the life you've always wanted and now here's your host Laurent Truc.Laurent: welcome back everyone today we got a special guest with us his name is Mike Grantis from barterpay.ca mike welcome to the show how are you.Mike: thanks so much appreciate you having me yeah, I'm greatLaurent: I'm glad you're on you're a bit of a different guest than I've had in the past focused on more of the online business type entrepreneurs and you're obviously your business is that but I think you provide services for many types of business so it'll be really interesting to kind of dive in and get the lowdown of how you help everybody so of course can you give a little bit of background about yourself.Mike : sure so my name is Mike Grantis I’m the senior director for business development with Barterpay Toronto community and essentially what barter pay is we're Canada’s largest and fastest growing organized barter exchange so what that means is we help business owners to pay for things that they need or accumulate the things that they need using their own idle time capacity and services as payment instead of cash right so it's a way for business owners to conserve some of their cash get the things that they need increase their profit margins and grow their business. And the reason I say organized barter is because it's very different than traditional barter right traditional barter is the oldest form of commerce and it's how business was invented but it's got some big flaws and one of those is what we call the coincidence of wants and so what that is when you need to find somebody that has what you need needs what you have at the same time and at the same value and you know that doesn't happen very often in business especially with the complexities of kind of modern markets and so what we did with Barterpay is we created this ecosystem where you no longer have to be tied into one-to-one transactions all you have to do is provide your idle time or your idle capacity or goods and services to the network anybody within the Barterpay community can pay for those services using barter credits and each barter credit is equal in value to Canadian dollars one to one for kind of accounting tax and valuation purposes .Then you accumulate those barter credits and you ca...

MPP006 – Buying and Selling Online Businesses and Starting a Cannabis Focused Brokerage – Part 1

2/13/2020
https://youtu.be/vUWSVXfcWGw Interview with Ryan Sorensen and David Carroll owners of Green Rock Network In Episode 6 of the Mad Profit Podcast, Ryan Sorensen and David Carroll, are buyer and seller brokers who have teamed up to create Green Rock Networks, a Cannabis based Digital Property Brokerage. (https://greenrocknetwork.com/). In part 1 of this two part interview, David and Ryan share their extensive knowledge about trends and direction in the internet space while providing guidance for entrepreneurs who want to get started in buying and selling digital properties. Transcription Preamble: Hello everybody and welcome to the Mad Profit Podcast. My name is Laurent Truc. I wanted to do a little preamble to this next episode that we're doing because it's a bit different. We interviewed Ryan Sorensen and David Carroll both business brokers in the online space. One is a seller broker and the other is a buyer broker. So very interesting to get their take on the industry. It ended up being a pretty long interview so we decided to cut this into two segments. The first one is very much about the industry of online businesses and their thoughts about the direction it's going in and the process of buying and selling these businesses. The latter part is more around a new venture that they're putting together which is a brokerage really focused on cannabis based online business. So really interesting. I hope you stay tuned for both Part one and Part two. Today we're going to focus on part one only and then we'll do the next one next week. Looking forward to diving right in. Thank you. Intro: Welcome to the Mad Profit Podcast where we interview active investors entrepreneurs and experts who left corporate jobs to buy or start successful ventures and live life on their own terms. Listen to their stories learn from their experiences and heed their advice so you too can create mad profits and the life you've always wanted and now here's your host Laurent Truc. Laurent: Thanks everybody and welcome back to the Mad Profit Podcasts. I'm excited. I've got two very special guests today. I'm actually going to let them introduce themselves. Ryan go ahead, kick us off. Ryan: Ryan Sorensen here from Acquisition Station. Laurent: How are you Ryan? And David? David: Alright I'm David Carroll from DJC Digital Brokers. Laurent: Perfect so guys thank you so much for making the time and joining us on the podcast today. Well I'm really excited about this I have yet to interview anybody that's hardcore in the space that's worked with as many sellers and buyers on both sides that that you guys have so very much looking forward to getting into your heads, understanding the market, some of the new stuff that you guys are working on which is pretty exciting. I think this will be a very interesting conversation so why don't we get a little bit of background from you guys. Ryan if you don't mind starting us off, can you tell us a little bit about yourself, how did you get from inception to here and talk to us a little bit about who you are. Ryan: Alright so first I was born in 1984 and then in 2009 I was in college I got bored and then I decided to do some stuff on the internet. I made one dollar on Adsense. I'm like oh this is kind of cool and then it turned into a website. I sold that 2011 and then after that I got into brokering and it's been like that ever since. Laurent: That's crazy. So pretty much that's just my whole life up to this point. Very cool and just for my personal interest what was the niche of this site. Ryan: So the first site that I did was called onlinejobsforstudents.com because I didn't want a regular job. I just wanted to do something online so it's just a little basic content site, just monetize with affiliates. Laurent: And it was all the stuff you were interested? David how about yourself can you give us a little bit about your background and how you got here? David: Yes absolutely.

And now here's your host Laurent Truc Laurent: Ace welcome to the Mad Profit Podcast. Thank you for joining us Ace: It is good to be here. You know, it's always special when I get to do these with folks that I've had the opportunity to work with you. We've been working together for a little while so thanks for inviting me on Laurent: well, thanks for accepting. I think I've learned so much from you over the few years that we've been working together and some of the deals that we've done. I think there's a lot to extract from you during this short time together. I'm looking forward to it. So, why don't we start a little bit with your journey? I know you have a pretty interesting background. Can you speak a little bit around what got you here for the audience? Ace: Yeah, I guess it was a bit untraditional. You know my dream as a kid was one day to own a big business and make a lot of money (that kind of thing) and so the path that we're all told to do that is to get into the best school that you possibly can, get really great grades and you’ll earn a lot. When I was young growing up in an inner city, we had a school that was an all-boys school called McCallie. It was just a really great school and was nationally ranked as a high school and before going there, I really didn't care much about school but it was very challenging and I kind of got engaged. Then after that I got into Colgate which is one of the top 20 schools in the US and I became all about education. I knew I had to get a full ride. My parents could not afford, what was 40 grand a year back then. I don't even know what it is now, but 40 grand a year, whatever it was, my parents could not afford that. I ended up getting a scholarship which was a huge win and my sophomore year everything changed. I'm getting good grades, president the class, and just loving school. Then a buddy of mine comes to me who was the programmer (this is back in the day of Instant messenger in chat rooms) and I was a real business nerd and into the stock market. I had been a member of this website called CoolWallStreet and had built this internet friendship with this guy who had built it. While he was doing that, he built this other project that was growing a lot faster than Coolwallstreet and he basically came to me and said he wanted to sell the business. He said you’ve been really involved as a client and I'm wondering if you know anybody that would want to buy it. I'm 19 years old, a College kid, in the middle of nowhere New York, no, I don't know anybody that wants to buy this thing. But I was curious. I'm just as a user and as somebody who was interested in business, I ask how much money is it making and do you want to sell it for. He actually sent me all the information and I start pouring over it. It was making about $60K a year off and he wanted to sell it for $70K I didn't know anything about valuations or if that was a good price or a bad price.

Listen to their stories, learn from their experiences and heed their advice so you too can create mad profits and the life you've always wanted and now here's your host Laurent Truc. Laurent: Hi, everyone my name is Laurent and welcome to the Mad Profit Podcast where we interview investors entrepreneurs and experts who have bought, started or invested in successful businesses and are living life on their terms. I'm really excited today to have a good friend of mine and mentor as our guest, Jim Hickey. Jim welcome to the show. Jim: Thanks. Laurent: Glad you could make it and I am really looking forward to this interview. You've had a very interesting background. You and I have talked about this a few times and you've got so much to share. So I'm looking forward to picking your brain and learning a lot more from you (as I'm sure the audience does as well). Jim: Let's have fun doing it.Laurent: Perfect. Why don't you kick us off? Can you give me a little bit of background about yourself and a little bit of the work that you've done? Then we can dive into each one of these individual topics. Jim: Sure, one of the things that I tell people anytime I get into a situation where people are trying to understanding who I am, I tell them that I started life as number eight of eight but ultimately, I became eight of 11 children. I have seven brothers and three sisters and that informs just about everything I do. I grew up on a farm, father died when I was a young teenager, and my mother carried the load still having eight kids in public school as a single parent; she would have been 51 at the time. That kind of determines how you approach life. When you have 10 siblings around and a parent to tell you when you're wrong (I don't recall being told I was right about too many things but silence I took for being correct behavior), it drives you to look at the world in a certain way and think about things differently than what many others do. I got through public school, went on to university, really for sport-related reasons (I played soccer and junior hockey) and had a competitive streak to win. I was never worried about losing. I know lots of competitive people and really highly competitive people that fight like hell not to lose. I was on the other side of that and there is a difference. My approach to life is really about doing what I can to win and the consequences of losing I never worry about. Once I walk away from a game, it doesn't matter what it is, if I've lost and I did what I needed to do to win, then I don't think too much about it. I move on to the next thing. Through University I left the east coast of Canada moved to the west coast and got involved in a couple of interesting things that weren't in the business world because I still had no idea what I was going to do. I had a basic science degree that was focused on the kinesiology world and ended up heading back east in Toronto. I started and landed in sales. I was probably in my early 20s and knew nothing about the business world. I had no mentors in it; not a single family member went into that space. I didn't have uncles or cousins or any family members in the space. The older women in my life would have all been stay-at-home moms so I didn't have that influence.

Steve how are you today Steve: Pretty Good thanks, LaurentLaurent: Awesome. Thanks for joining us. I really appreciate you taking the time and taking the risk.Steve: You got to start somewhere right so let's give it a runLaurent: So Steven I have known each other for what's been like 15 years now. Steve: It's been quite a while yeah. Laurent: We worked together for some time and then Steve went on to greener pastures so Steve why don't I have you give a brief introduction of yourself to our listeners so we can kick this off okaySteve: So, Steve Maynard I am the president of Virtual Meeting Advisors which is a telephone solutions and conferencing services company companies a little over 10 years old. Basically we started off in the conferencing space so tools such as zoom WebEx GoToMeeting, Adobe those are all tools that we provide as well as telephone conferencing and then in addition a number of years ago we got into the voice over IP space. So setting up phone systems for small to medium businesses with the whole goal of our organization is to actually have multiple backends and the advantage of that is then we can really sit down with our clients understand what their needs are and make sure they're using the correct solution and because we can provide multiple solutions it really eliminates that square peg round hole problem comes up occasionally and the client has to get the right application for their needs Laurent: Got it, very good. So tell me a little bit about because when we started we were both in corporate well I left us what we started but when we got together we first met each other so your journey has taken you from that to this new world of entrepreneurship so I can talk a little bit about how you decided to leave corporate and why getting into this field and what was that whole transition like for you.Steve: The biggest catalyst was actually when I finished working with you I just knew I couldn't do it anymore in the corporate world (Laugh). I couldn't resist. No I mean really right so you and I had a great relationship both working at personal the big scenario for myself was I left school I've always sort of had an entrepreneurial spirit I created a company when there's a king called Steve snow shoveling and hired friends I mean different process they just literally shoveling snow it was you know two people essentially made it faster than you bought product inventory to be able to make it even faster so a little spins like that when you sort of finish school you have this great idea that you want to work for the big sexy companies. And I must say I did and it was pretty fun but I learned very quickly things tend to be slow so the nice ...

MPP000 – Introduction to Mad Profit Podcast

12/13/2019
https://youtu.be/0GCVw4izuGs Welcome to the Mad Profit Podcast We are really excited to be launching our very own podcast to help our followers learn from entrepreneurs, investors and business experts on how to create successful businesses while living life on your terms. Prefer just the audio: Transcription of Podcast Intro: Welcome to the Mad Profit Podcast where we interview active investors entrepreneurs and experts who left corporate jobs to buy or start successful ventures and live life on their own terms. Listen to their stories, learn from their experiences and heed their advice so you too can create Mad Profits and the life you've always wanted. And now here's your host Laurent Truc. Laurent: Welcome to the Mad Profit Podcast. My name is Laurent Truc and I will be your host as we interview each week an entrepreneur, business expert or investor who have left their corporate jobs to start a new successful venture and live life on their terms. So I know what you're probably thinking... do we really need another business or entrepreneurial podcast? I know there' are hundreds out there but the challenge I've had with the podcasts that are out there is they tend to interview wildly successful mainstream entrepreneurs who quite frankly talk about all the great things that they've done and don't spend enough time focusing on what it takes to get started. That first leap from a corporate position to an entrepreneurial position and those first six months to a year which are the most critical for a business. What the Mad Profit Podcast is going to do is really focus on speaking to entrepreneurs that made that leap to understand their emotional state and understand what they did in the first six months to be successful. We we can distill that information and be successful in our ventures as well. Along the way we're going to interview some business experts and investors. There are many people that are buying businesses from an investment standpoint, so we also want to capture information that these individuals have seen so we take their learnings and avoid making our own mistakes. We want to take the best information that we can out there to be successful. That is the point of the Mad Profit Podcast. I very much look forward to learning about you as an audience. My email is laurent@madxcapital.com and I invite you all to send me comments, questions or anything about the show such as something you’d like to see us cover or even if you would be interested in being interviewed on our podcast. We hope that this podcast becomes very valuable to you. Please subscribe so that you get the latest information when the podcasts are released.I wish you a very successful entrepreneurial journey. All the best. Outro: Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Mad Profit Podcast.
