UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'It's the consumer that matters now'

8/16/2022
US July industrial production is due. The US is not as important a manufacturer as it used to be, but it does still matter to global supply. However, the economic debate has rather shifted from the supply side to concerns about the level of demand. It is the consumer who stands on the dividing line between slowdown and slump.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Inflation week concludes'

8/12/2022
UK second quarter GDP fell less than expected. Consumer spending was negative. While consumers elsewhere in the world may use savings and credit cards to offset falling real incomes, the UK tabloid media has made consumers suitably afraid of impending energy price increases. There is a wacky idea that the Bank of England should target nominal GDP. Nominal first quarter GDP growth was revised from 2.5 percent to 3.2 percent. Hardly a stable target.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'The US enters deflation (for some)'

8/11/2022
The Federal Reserve’s June policy errors explain the market reaction to the US’s July consumer price inflation. Fed Chair Powell, who is not an economist, elevated the importance of the volatile CPI number. Fed speakers are desperately guiding that they still intend to raise rates, but the Fed tore up forward guidance and investors have no reason to believe a word Fed officials say.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'How ‘transitory’ won and lost'

8/10/2022
One of the Federal Reserve’s June policy errors was to focus on consumer price inflation as a policy driver. Consumer price inflation is volatile, its largest component is a fantasy price no one pays, and the Fed has little control over more than half of the index. But the Fed focus means it matters to markets. Falling gasoline prices mean the July headline rate is expected to fall.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Are you recklessly having fun?'

8/9/2022
UK data offers some global insight, not because the UK matters globally, but because many economies are following similar patterns in growth, and economic parallels are more convincing when delivered with a British accent. British Retail Consortium retail sales figures fell sharply in real terms. Falling real incomes mean falling consumption, the slump scenario, unless consumers cut savings or increase borrowing.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Good news and bad news'

8/8/2022
Last Friday’s US economic data needs to be considered as a whole. Unemployment was the lowest in over fifty years, real earnings growth is horrifically bad, and consumer credit grew dramatically. The positive spin is job security should be high - prime age workers who want to work can find jobs. Job security is a critical factor supporting consumption.
