UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Minute signals'

11/23/2022
The Federal Reserve will be publishing the minutes of the last meeting, which raised rates by 0.75 percentage points in accordance with Fed Chair Powell’s relentless ‘hike, hike, hike’ tactic. There are signs that some members of the FOMC are questioning this Pavlovian policy, with comments hinting at a slowing in the pace of tightening.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Where does fear strike?'

11/23/2022
China is reporting rising Covid cases, with a fifth of the economy under some kind of restriction. Fear of the virus in the wake of rising case numbers will weigh on Chinese consumers. It is fear of the virus that does the economic damage - the rest of the world is avoiding that fear with the security of effective vaccination.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'What might be weakening demand'

11/22/2022
Japan’s October consumer price inflation was in line with the majority of economists’ forecasts. The (international) core measure was 1.5 percent year over year, but that reflects some very weak inflation in October 2021. Japanese consumers have been more moderate in their demand than those of the US, the UK, and Europe, preventing the profit margin expansion that has broadened inflation elsewhere.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Cooling consumption'

11/22/2022
Asian markets were upset by evidence of zero-COVID policy restrictions in China. There are reports of more lockdowns and further deaths. The path to ending zero-COVID (probably in the third quarter of next year) is unlikely to be smooth. The economic damage falls on domestic consumption if consumers save more as a precaution against COVID-related detention.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Who governs?'

11/21/2022
US Republicans reached 218 seats in the House of Representatives, giving them a majority. It is stretching the English language too far to describe this as ‘control’. Whichever party reached 218 seats, control would be difficult given the potential for internal dissent. The harsh reality is that control will be influenced by which party has fewer deaths and fewer resignation-inducing scandals among its representatives.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Assessing geopolitical risks'

11/21/2022
Markets reacted relatively calmly to reports of a missile striking Poland, killing two Polish citizens. US President Biden has said it is unlikely that the missile was fired from Russia. NATO leaders have been careful in their language. Investors might note the speed and unanimity of the NATO response - that unanimity might influence future Russian policy.

UBS On-Air: Paul Donovan Daily Audio 'Profits pushing up prices'

11/21/2022
China’s October data highlighted the economy’s problems. Industrial production was weak. Global demand for goods is slowing. China sits at the end of many global supply chains, so that affects production. Meanwhile, Beijing’s zero-COVID policies have pushed retail sales down, driven by detentions and restrictions, as well as fear. Japan’s third quarter GDP data fell unexpectedly - fear of the virus may have restrained Japanese consumers.
