The Boys in the Bunkhouse: Servitude and Salvation in the Heartland"

2/20/2024
In the tiny Iowa farm town of Atalissa, a group of intellectually disabled men, all from Texas, lived in a tired old schoolhouse. Every morning, well before dawn, they were bussed to a processing plant to eviscerate turkeys in return for food, lodging, and $65 a month. From 1974 until 2009, the men lived in near servitude, enduring increasing neglect, exploitation, and physical and emotional abuse—until state social workers, local journalists, and one tenacious government lawyer helped these men achieve their freedom. New York Times columnist Dan Barry reveals how these men in an Iowa schoolhouse remained nearly forgotten for more than three decades. Drawing on exhaustive interviews, he dives deeply into their lives, recording their memories and suffering, their tender moments of joy and persistent hopefulness—their endurance of harrowing circumstances. Barry explores why this small heartland town remained all but blind to the men’s plight, details how those responsible for such profound neglect justified their actions, and chronicles the lasting impact of a dramatic court case that has spurred advocates—as well as President Obama—to push for just pay and improved working conditions for people with disabilities. A luminous work of social justice, told with compassion and compelling detail, The Boys in the Bunkhouse is inspired storytelling and a clarion call for vigilance—an American tale that holds lasting reverberations for all of us Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Phillip Crawford Jr. - The Mafia and the Gays

2/17/2024
Phillip Crawford Jr. - The Mafia and the Gays Former NY Lawyer and true crime author Phillip J. Crawford joins Ed Opperman to discuss how the Mafia capitalised on the gay scene at a time when it was illegal and frowned upon. The Mafia and the Gays meticulously documents how the mob controlled gay bars for decades in New York and Chicago due to their once illicit status, and relies upon an extensive collection of primary sources including FBI files many of which were not publicly available until acquired by author Phillip Crawford Jr. through substantive amounts of FOIs. Walter Herbst - It Didnt Start With JFK - 2 Oswald's Different heights

2/16/2024
Author Walter Herbst brings four decades of intensive, comprehensive research to uncovering the truth behind the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, including an analysis of how the manipulations of misguided patriots in the military-industrial complex and intelligence community led inevitably to the events in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963. Why did Lee Harvey Oswald ask for the only attorney in America who had represented someone who tried to take over the U.S. government? And why did President Eisenhower warn the nation about a Military-Industrial Complex in his last televised address as President? During the Cold War, the United States looked to curtail the spread of communism by the Soviet Union. “Massive Retaliation” defined U.S. foreign policy. A perpetual war machine was created, made up of major defense contractors and right-wing military generals, whose motivation was greed and to prepare the nation for war. The threat of nuclear holocaust allowed the CIA to grow out of control. They engaged in drug experimentation on innocents, assassinations, and used Mafia drug money to secretly fund their most heinous operations. Not everyone agreed with this. Generals resigned in protest, and there was concern of a possible military government takeover. With Kennedy in office, they would resort to assassination. Despite his Marxist views, young Lee Harvey Oswald associated with Fascists and shared their right-wing ideology. There is physical evidence that Marine Oswald’s defection to the Soviet Union in 1959 was a CIA operation to make it seem he died in Russia. A Soviet “sleeper agent” returned to the U.S., who could blame for any crime. Seventeen months later, JFK was assassinated. Coincidence or conspiracy? Harry N. MacLean - Starkweather - The Untold Story of the Killing Spree that Changed America

2/16/2024
On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweather’s car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. Schools closed. Men with rifles perched on the roofs of their houses. The National Guard patrolled the street. If there is a cultural version of PTSD, the town suffered from it. Starkweather and Fugate’s capture and arrest, and the resulting trials about the killing spree, received worldwide coverage. The event would serve as the inspiration for the movie Natural Born Killers and Springsteen’s iconic album Nebraska. Today, the story has dropped far from the national consciousness. With new material, new reporting, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Fugate, the tale is ripe for an updated and definitive retelling. In Starkweather, bestselling author Harry N. MacLean tells the story of this shocking event and its lasting impact, a crime spree that struck deep into the heart of the heartland. Harry N. MacLean joins Ed Opperman to discuss this book and more. Book Website Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Charles Upham : Daughter, Misty Upham raped by Weinstein Exec at Golden Globe Awards “My daughter, Misty Upham, was a victim of rape by a Weinstein Executive in 2013 at the Golden Globe Awards. The rapist forced her into the men’s room and had his way while other men in formal wear cheered him on as if he were chugging a beer in a contest. As Misty made the walk of shame back to the event, the Exec was given high fives, bragging rights and another notch in his Weinstein Co. belt. What should have been an auspicious occasion for Misty turned into a nightmare of pain, humiliation, fear and anxiety. The Other Oswald: A Wilderness of Mirrors

2/13/2024
This book is the story of two men who began an odyssey together that became a thread, which when unraveled, reveals how Cold War paranoia escalated into the death of a president. Robert Edward Webster and Lee Harvey Oswald were manipulated like marionettes on strings of espionage. Unraveling these strings (or threads) may lead us to the puppeteers controlling them. Were these “controllers” orchestrating a series of events that would lead to JFK's assassination? Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposter Behind the World's Most Notorious Diaries

2/12/2024
Two teens. Two diaries. Two social panics. One incredible fraud. In 1971, Go Ask Alice reinvented the young adult genre with a blistering portrayal of sex, psychosis, and teenage self-destruction. The supposed diary of a middle-class addict, Go Ask Alice terrified adults and cemented LSD's fearsome reputation, fueling support for the War on Drugs. Five million copies later, Go Ask Alice remains a divisive bestseller, outraging censors and earning new fans, all of them drawn by the book's mythic premise: A Real Diary, by Anonymous. But Alice was only the beginning. In 1979, another diary rattled the culture, setting the stage for a national meltdown. The posthumous memoir of an alleged teenage Satanist, Jay's Journal merged with a frightening new crisis—adolescent suicide—to create a literal witch hunt, shattering countless lives and poisoning whole communities. In reality, Go Ask Alice and Jay's Journal came from the same dark place: a serial con artist who betrayed a grieving family, stole a dead boy's memory, and lied her way to the National Book Awards. Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposter Behind the World's Most Notorious Diaries is a true story of contagious deception. It stretches from Hollywood to Quantico, and passes through a tiny patch of Utah nicknamed "the fraud capital of America." It's the story of a doomed romance and a vengeful celebrity. Of a lazy press and a public mob. Of two suicidal teenagers, and their exploitation by a literary vampire. Unmask Alice . . . where truth is stranger than nonfiction.
