S8 Ep 7 - Lead Poisoning in Milwaukee: A Silent Danger and a Growing Problem

5/9/2023
In this episode of The 411 Live, Michael Mannan, the Director of Home Environmental Health with the City of Milwaukee Health Department, speaks about lead poisoning, a problem that has been around for decades and continues to affect large urban cities. Lead paint, which was first used in buildings in the 1920s and wasn't removed until 1978, still exists in over 250,000 units, according to Mannan’s estimate. He believes the actual number may be even higher, as some buildings are apartment complexes and may have multiple units. The hazards of lead paint are apparent when maintenance is delayed and the surfaces begin to deteriorate and create chip or dust. Lead can also be found in water and soil. The discussion sheds light on the barriers to solving this problem and the efforts being made to minimize the impact on our children's health. 00:02:55 Hazards of lead paint. 00:07:42 Inequalities with lead poisoning in different areas of Milwaukee. 00:13:21 Preventing lead poisoning. 00:24:13 Invest in rental literacy. 00:28:23 What is lead in water, homeowners responsibility and tests that can be done. 00:29:35 City of Milwaukee property violations data base. Violence can be defined as the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation. Violence is a learned behavior that can be unlearned. To stop violence, we need to change the individual, group and community behaviors as it relates to how we think and interact with each other. Like other cities around the country, multiple forms of violence have caused significant injury and trauma for individuals, families, and neighborhoods across Milwaukee. Join us as we talk to Cornelius Hall, 414 Life Violence Interrupter Supervisor and Certified Gang Expert about what 414 Life is, what is a violence Interrupter and how they go about interrupting the cycle of violence.
