Snot, sutures and dirty diapers. Who in their right mind would sign up for such a thing?!?! Well...me! I did. Because I know that I am going to have to deal with little ones and their germs for the rest of my career, I decided to take a Peds EM elective so that I could be more comfortable dealing with them as patients. With 3 weeks already completed, I'll talk about some of the insights that I have gained, as well as some key pointers that I will be able to take with me in future rotations. Mental health and depression are heavy topics and they can happen to anyone. In my 2nd (or 3rd) semester of med school I was at a workshop that talked about time management and study skills. Being in school for as long as I have, I've heard most of general principles before, but there was one thing that afternoon that caught my attention. After going back to my study spot, I noticed that one of the biggest study pit-falls that I had fallen into because I didn't really think it was a big deal. Turns out I was wrong. In this episode, I'm going to talk about the potential magnitude of picking up your phone "just for a minute" while studying and what those ripples can translate to when it comes time for finals. I have finally made it to my 4th year of med school and I am loving every minute of it. Unfortunately, that wasn't always the case. There have been moments where I was worn thin and pushed to my limits. In this episode, I share an experience that completely changed my outlook on my clinical experience and it has made a world of difference. Joseph Gomes was no exception and he knew that one day, he too would become a professional wrestler. But while fulfilling his dream of coming off the top rope, Joe found another passion; medicine. (Repost - Original posting on January 13, 2013) It's pretty common for healthcare workers to wear ID badges so that patients and visitors not only know who people, but in which capacity they provide care. Many hospitals have taken that a step further and also require employees to wear title badges that, in bigger letters, say RN, RT, TECH, or even doctors. One of the odd things that has come from this is the exposure of osteopathic doctors to the public consciousness. When their doctor comes in and their badge says DO instead of MD, it usually leads to the same question; "What's the difference anyways?" If MDs and DOs work side by side, then what is the difference in their training? Do they use different meds? Different techniques? IS the training different? When the goal of taking care of patients is to provide the gold standard of care, then is their really even a difference between MDs and DOs? (Repost - Original posting on December 30, 2012) Today I'm going to talk about an experience that I had with nurse (lets call her "Nurse Phee Phee) that i've worked with for a while and I had an immediate visceral reaction. I wanted to instantly snap back and prove I'm smarter she was, but I also knew that a pissing contest like that wouldn't do anybody any good. As a premed, med student or even doctor, it can be a frustrating when someone doesn’t recognize your hard work. But letting your ego get in the way of patient care can hurt you, your coworkers and the patients you are trying to help! its important to know the strengths of the people that surround you, especially when their expertise may need to supersede yours! Sometimes the best leader is a good follower! Medical Minute Diluted Hyponatremia This was the cause of death for a woman who was in a radio contest entitled “Hold Your Wee For A Wii!” As a result of drinking too much water, there was a fatal shift in electrolytes in this woman’s body. Her blood became so dilute that vital organs could not get any of the needed electrolytes, resulting in organ shutdown and then organ failure.
