Directed by Jonathan Demme and adapted from Thomas Harris's 1988 novel of the same name it follows Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee who is hunting a serial killer named "Buffalo Bill", as she seeks the advice of the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer. This week we watched the 2011 adaptation of the play of the same name, The Sunset Limited. Directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson, the film is about the relationship between a Christian African American who has a positive view of life and a nihilistic White man with a very negative view. What a coincidence this was mentioned at last night’s Academy Awards, we watched the 1989 baseball fantasy Field of Dreams. Directed by Phil Alden Robinson and based on Canadian novelist W. P. Kinsella's 1982 novel Shoeless Joe, the film stars Kevin Costner as a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) and the Chicago Black Sox. This week we watched the 2024 epic scifi film Dune Part 2. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the sequel to Dune (2021), it is the second of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel and follows Paul Atreides as he unites with the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis to wage war against House Harkonnen. This week we watched the 2010 Japanese samurai drama film 13 Assassins. Our second film of the season may, for the second year in a row, be starting an unintentional theme month of van movies with the 2015 dramedy The Lady in the Van. Directed by Nicholas Hytner, the film is based on the memoir of the same name created by Alan Bennett which tells the story of Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who 'temporarily' parks her van in Bennett's London driveway and proceeds to live there for 15 years.
