Tynitria Portis: Transforming Her Experience Growing Up with Addiction, Neglect, and Abuse Into a Beacon of Hope for Others

11/28/2023
Content Warning: This episode mentions abuse, child sexual abuse, child neglect, suicidal ideations, and suicidal attempts. Having a nurturing and stable upbringing is something too many of us take for granted. And growing up with a single parent in the throes of addiction can shape and mold a young, impressionable girl in many ways. This week on Journeys Through Change, I am joined by guest Tynitria Portis as she shares how she transformed her experience growing up around addiction, neglect and abuse into a beacon of hope for others. Tynitria Portis grew up with an alcoholic mother who abandoned her at the age of 5 – leaving her to care for her younger siblings while struggling to find stability within the chaos of emotional, mental, physical, and sexual abuse. Over the years, she experienced challenges in relationships and after coming to terms with her own infidelity, she credits years of therapy along with a strong will to break the patterns of generational dysfunction for helping her grow into the woman she is today. Now, as a spiritual leader and confidence coach, she now helps others gain the confidence to channel the pain caused by past trauma into creating greater purpose in their lives. Tynitria is a Spiritual Leader and Confidence Coach for black men and women who have the ambition to create their own opportunities and the passion to experience greater fulfillment in life. She is also a woman of God, a devoted wife, a mother of 2 boys, and an author. She specializes in helping her clients get out of the survival mentality and into a mindset of prosperity. In this episode, Tynitria and I discuss: If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, you can reach out to the Rape, Abuse and Incest national network by visiting online.rainn.org to chat one-on-one with a trained RAINN support specialist, any time 24/7. Chat one-on-one with a RAINN support specialist to access a range of free services including: · Confidential support from a trained support specialist · Someone to help you talk through what happened · Resources that can assist with your next steps toward healing and recovery · Referrals for long term support in your area · Information about the laws and resources in your community If you enjoyed this episode don’t forget to follow, rate, and review the podcast and tell me what resonated with you. Melissa Lombardo: How her Journey of Healing from Sexual Assault Led Her to Help Others Face Past Trauma with Strength and Courage

11/14/2023
Content Warning: This episode contains discussions of sexual assault. Trauma can often be suppressed for years until something can cause the past to resurface, forcing it to be faced head-on in order to heal. Over 40% of women encounter sexual assault making it the most prevalent and unreported crime in the US. Today’s guest, Melissa Lombardo knows firsthand the fear that keeps so many from reporting their sexual assault and the lasting trauma that lingers when left unhealed. This week on Journeys Through Change, Melissa and I are talking about how her journey of healing from sexual assault led her to help others face past trauma with greater strength and courage. Melissa Lombardo knows first-hand the silence surrounding the topic of sexual violence. She experienced a sexual assault during college in the early 2000s and through fear of retaliation, it went unreported. It was not until years later when her family moved back to her hometown that she realized her past trauma was holding her back from moving forward and she needed to do the work to begin to heal. She soon heard a whisper telling her she needed to get her voice out there so she joined a writer’s group, became a certified sexual assault crisis advocate with the same organization that helped her 20 years post-assault, and recently published Hurt, Healing and Hope – Thriving Beyond Sexual Assault - a book and interwoven performance piece to support the healing of those who have faced their own trauma. Jen Gottlieb: How to Step Out of the Shadows and Into Alignment to Finally BE SEEN as Your True Self

10/31/2023
When you think about your life, do you ever have a moment where you look back and can see your experiences as dots on a map that have led you to where you are today? My guest today is no stranger to embracing change in her life. The series of pivots she has gone through has offered her a new perspective and made her become a powerful force who now helps women recognize the beauty in their own journeys and their power to step out of the shadows and be seen. This week on Journeys Through Change, my guest Jen Gottlieb and I are talking about how you can step out of the shadows and into alignment and finally BE SEEN as your true self. Before she co-founded Super Connector Media, Jen was pursuing her dreams of becoming an actress in New York City. Her hard work and determination paid off when she landed her role in the Broadway National Tour of The Wedding Singer. That was just the beginning of Jen’s acting career. She soon landed a role on a hit TV series on VH1 called That Metal Show. Jen was cast as “Miss Box of Junk”, aka “The Vanna White of Rock and Roll” on a show about heavy metal music. There was just one little problem… Jen hated heavy metal music. After her show got canceled and her cheating boyfriend left her all in one week, Jen turned her breakdown into a transformative breakthrough, when she realized that sometimes sh*t happens so that shift can happen. She went on to create the fulfillment, alignment, visibility, and impact she dreamed of by finally stepping into her very own spotlight and allowing the world to truly see her. To date, Jen has helped thousands of business owners, coaches, and experts gain the confidence and skills they need to discover their passion, be seen as their true selves, and stand confidently in their own light. Jane Hamill: How Walking Through the Doors of Opportunity Has Made Her Unstoppable in Fashion, Business, and Life

10/24/2023
This episode is a longer one, but I promise you it is well worth the listen. Tons of golden nuggets of insight. When you were little, did you dream of what you thought your life would look like? Looking back, is it anything like you pictured it? Life can be messy, wonderful, difficult, and equally amazing- all at the same time. As women, we are constantly swaying to the rhythm of life and re-inventing ourselves as time goes by. Our perspective is shaped by all of our experience and it’s our ability to embrace life’s little detours to create something new that makes us stronger. This week on Journeys Through Change, my guest Jane Hamill and I are talking about how walking through the doors of opportunity has made her unstoppable in fashion, business, and life. Jane’s passion started early as she grew up designing and sewing clothes for family members and went on to study fashion in New York and Paris before she started her own clothing line and opened Jane Hamill boutique in Chicago’s Lincoln Park at age 25. As her retail business took off she began to showcase her collections in Bloomingdales, Macy's, Saks, and hundreds of specialty stores. Due to family priorities, she decided to sell her business after 14 years and jump into the world of retail consulting. She soon built a thriving community with her brand Fashion Brain providing inspiration, guidance, and a boatload of business expertise to fashion, accessories, and jewelry designers worldwide. As her consulting business continues to thrive, she has embraced her long-time passion for gardening and has co-founded a new venture - North Branch Natives - a home-grown, sustainable business offering native plants and gardening classes to those interested in cultivating beauty and pollinator habitat in their own backyard. In this episode, Jane and I discuss: Things are not going to happen as you expect them to and how you approach these changes is EVERYTHING. Beauty is defined as the quality or aggregated qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or raises the mind or spirit. After today’s guest went cliff jumping, she was hit with the realization that she has one life so she may as well live the life she’s always wanted. This week on Journeys Through Change (formerly known as Go Go Bistro), my guest Caley Rose and I are talking about how jumping off a cliff led her to launch her singing career and empower students through music. 5 years ago, Caley Rose was doing voice over work when she decided to take a trip to NZ. She had taken her first leap - and now she knew it was time to take her second - to pursue a career as a professional singer and songwriter. Pamela Holt: How Her Love of Adventure and Storytelling Led Her to Host Her Own Travel Series

7/18/2023
Have you ever considered stepping out of your day-to-day to get a fresh perspective on life and immerse yourself in a new culture or way of living? Have you avoided doing so because you’re always beholden to someone else’s schedule? Today’s guest decided to stop letting life get in her way and began solo traveling the world. Good news for you, she shares the insight she gained and her advice so you can do it too. This week on Journeys Through Change (formerly known as Go Go Bistro), my guest Pamela Holt and I are talking about how her love of adventure and storytelling led her to host her own travel show. Pamela Holt is no stranger to solo travel. She was led into it by her sense of adventure and drive to overcome a debilitating accident that left her making a promise to herself she was determined to keep. Born in California and raised on the beautiful island of Oahu, Pamela studied theatre and film at UCLA where she developed a passion for storytelling. She went on to pursue her acting and musical theatre career and her star began to rise as she found herself duetting with Barry Manilow at the Hollywood Palladium and selling her first indie film, “The Three Amigas” at Cannes Short Film Festival. Unfortunately, her plans came to a screeching halt when she experienced a traumatic car accident at the age of 35 that left her immobilized. Only a few years later she was hit by another driver and after extensive spinal surgery, she knew her long road of recovery would mean abandoning her acting and singing pursuits. She then made a promise to herself as she was being wheeled into surgery that she would travel 80 countries by the time she was 50. Now in her 50s, Pamela has certainly made good on her promise- she’s journeyed to over 81 countries and along the way, began working as a travel reporter and host while documenting content from her travels. Pamela is a producer, creator, and host of her new show, Me, Myself & The World: The Art of Solo Travel, a new TV series now streaming on Amazon Prime and Go Traveler, which is a love letter to the journey of rediscovering oneself and embracing second chances, or better yet, second acts. Changing Unhealthy Habits to Create the Life You Want

7/11/2023
I believe the way you treat yourself is closely related to what you’re willing to do to improve your quality of life. When we aren’t taking good care of ourselves, we’re sending subtle messages that we are not worthy of our own attention and care- and that can get in the way of progress on so many levels. This comes heavily into play when we use instant gratification to distract ourselves from the messiness and unpredictableness of life. This week on Journeys Through Change (formerly known as Go Go Bistro), I’m talking about changing your unhealthy habits to create the life you want! In this episode, I discuss: As you continue to become more aware of how you operate- especially in times of discomfort or challenge- and start to overcome those subtle self-imposed habits that are getting in the way of you showing up fully present in your life, the more connected you become to your wants and desires. This makes creating the life you want so much easier. If you enjoyed this episode don’t forget to follow, rate, and review the podcast and tell me what resonated with you. As women, we are naturally born caretakers and multitaskers, often putting everyone else first while neglecting our own self-care and health in the process. Healthcare workers only add another layer onto this, especially with the daily demands within the profession in even the best of times. This week on Journeys Through Change (formerly known as Go Go Bistro), my guest Michelle Gordon and I are talking about how overcoming burnout, addiction recovery, and leaving her 25-year nursing career brought her life into balance. Michelle Gordon has been a health care professional for 25 years with 8 years spent in emergency nursing. She was working exhausting hours, and living a life of fear, lack and scarcity – when she had a life changing moment that led her to addiction recovery and a new identity away from the career she felt had defined her for so many years. Today, Michelle shares how extreme burnout forced her to leave behind the long hours of nursing to embrace a healthier and more satisfying pace of health coaching – AND the challenges she faced taking on this new persona. In this episode, Michelle and I discuss: Lean into the fear, resistance, and discomfort you are feeling because just beyond that, something beautiful is waiting for you.
