Inviting Devotion Into Mindfulness Practice, with Oren Jay Sofer and Sean Fargo

11/29/2023
Devotion is not a quality that’s often talked about in secular mindfulness. But perhaps it should be. Devotion can be an inspiring means of getting out of our heads, out of our own way, and connecting to our own hearts and communities. It need not be reserved for the divine. For mindfulness teachers, devotion can also help reinforce a sense of humility and reverence that makes our teaching both more impactful and fulfilling. In this episode, Sean Fargo speaks with Oren Jay Sofer about his new book, “Your Heart Was Made for This: Contemplative Practices for Meeting a World in Crisis with Courage, Integrity and Love.” They discuss the quality of devotion and why we all could benefit from inviting devotion into our mindfulness practice. This podcast is brought to you by the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. This unique, online, self-paced certification program balances pre-recorded webinars with live mentorship. Students in the program learn directly from Sean Fargo, his team, and some of the world’s most respected mindfulness and meditation experts. 11/22/2023

The practice encourages a tender presence and a graceful acceptance of all that arises in our experience. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Anxiety Awareness, with Dr. Jud Brewer

11/15/2023
Myths and misconceptions about anxiety can prevent us from overcoming our struggles with it, holding us back from the greater calm and ease we seek. When we don’t understand the habit cycles around anxiety we can get stuck repeating them, unable to move forward. In this episode, best-selling author, researcher and psychiatrist Dr. Jud Brewer shines a light on anxiety. Dr. Jud combines ancient Buddhist psychology with modern neuroscience to help bring awareness to how anxiety functions and what ultimately is most helpful for minimizing anxiety-related suffering. Dr. Jud Brewer previously spoke about anxiety in episode #041, Unwinding Anxiety. In that episode, he breaks down the steps necessary to mindfully interrupt the anxiety habit loop. A Heartful Body Scan Meditation, with Sean Fargo

11/8/2023
A body scan meditation can be deeply relaxing, but relaxation is not the goal of mindfulness. Instead, mindfulness expands our capacity to be present with what is, whether or not what we experience is wanted. When our mindfulness is imbued with a tender, caring, heartfulness, we’re capable of presence with that which may be uncomfortable or challenging. Paradoxically, lovingly accepting all that we experience often results in greater relaxation. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo, the founder of Mindfulness Exercises, guides us through a mindful body scan. The practice emphasizes allowing for whatever we observe, as we apply a gentle heartfulness to our experience. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey. Embodied Awareness of Breath, A Meditation with Sean Fargo

10/25/2023
When you bring mindfulness to the breath, do you include the entirety of your body, incorporating all your senses? Mindfulness of breathing is not merely a cognitive process, one that takes place in the head. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo, founder of Mindfulness Exercises, invites us to observe our breathing using the body itself. Embodying awareness in this experiential manner connects us to the here and now, the only place where genuine happiness and contentment exists. The 4 Pillars of Well-Being, with Dr. Richie Davidson

10/4/2023
Well-being can be an abstract term. We’ve all heard that things like eating well, exercising and meditating are good for us, but we might be unsure why, or if they even work. For mindfulness and meditation researcher Dr. Richie Davidson, well-being is a measurable skill. And like any skill, it can be cultivated with practice. Well-being, he says, improves when we train in four specific areas: awareness, connection, insight and purpose. In this episode, Davidson introduces us to these pillars of well-being that, when nurtured, result in a life of greater comfort, health and happiness. To learn more about the science behind this transformation, listen to his previous episode, #051: The Modern Science of Mindfulness. Dr. Richard J. Davidson is a research professor of psychology and psychiatry and the Founder and Director of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His non-profit, Healthy Minds Innovations, uses the discoveries and insights gleaned from research to create tools to help people around the world build skills of well-being. Why does the mind seem to be inherently unstable? In this episode, we hear from Liam McClintock, founder and CEO of FitMind and a graduate of the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. Contentment with Simply Being, A Meditation with Sean Fargo

9/13/2023
In a state of contentment, we fully accept the truth of this present moment, just as it is. There’s nothing missing and there’s nothing here that shouldn’t be. Mindfulness meditation, the art of practicing non-judgmental presence, can help us cultivate contentment for a more satisfactory experience of our everyday life. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo invites us to ground ourselves in the body and in this moment by sensing into physical sensation. Having rooted ourselves in presence, we are encouraged to bring mindfulness to the quality of contentment. Familiarizing ourselves with the sensation of contentment helps us to be more aware of it outside our formal practice. How to Hardwire Happiness, with Rick Hanson

9/6/2023
Positive states, such as happiness, joy, moments of embodied presence or mindfulness are common, but they’re often short-lasting. Is it possible to transform these fleeting states into lasting traits? Even in moments of hardship or suffering, we can still be rooted in happiness by growing the good that lasts. In this episode, psychologist, author and mindfulness teacher Dr. Rick Hanson teaches us why hardwiring happiness is indeed possible, and how to do it with positive neuroplasticity training. Rick Hanson is a Senior Fellow of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, and a New York Times best-selling author. Opening to Gladness, A Meditation with Sean Fargo

8/30/2023
Who makes your heart sing? Sensing into the presence of someone who loves us deeply, who offers us unconditional kindness, can help us connect to present-moment feelings of gladness. This may be someone we know personally, or anyone we look up to as a source of care and comfort. In this guided meditation with Sean Fargo, we’re invited to bring to mind one such person, and to sense into the gladness we feel when in their (imagined) presence. We explore that gladness as a sensation in the body and breath. By doing so, we become more familiar with it, and thus potentially more aware of its presence in everyday life. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. An Apprenticeship with Grief, with Francis Weller

8/23/2023
How can we bring mindfulness to grief? Grief is something we all go through, for ourselves, our loved ones, our communities, and our planet. And yet, many of us are afraid to open up to the strong emotions of grief, sorrow and loss. In this episode, we hear from psychotherapist, author and soul activist Francis Weller on how developing a long-term apprenticeship with grief can help us metabolize our sorrow and stay present for the fullness of this life. Francis Weller, MFT, is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures and poetic traditions, a style he calls soul-centered psychotherapy. He is the author of several books on loss, sorrow, and grief, and offers a 4-session audio course, An Apprenticeship with Sorrow: Community, Ritual, and the Sacred Work of Grief.
