The emotional support available for those living with macular disease
11/1/2023
Suzanne Roberts from the Macular Society Counselling service joins Colin Daniels for this episode of the My Macular and Me podcast. We are also joined by Lesley who was diagnosed with macular disease and began using our counselling service when she felt she was at her lowest. This episode looks at the emotional impact of a diagnosis of macular disease and the support that is available from the Society.
A diagnosis of macular disease can be extremely upsetting. Finding out that you may lose much of your central vision, and adapting to changes in your vision, can be very difficult to comprehend. After diagnosis many people struggle to cope with their emotions and can feel shocked, afraid or isolated. It can help to speak to a professional counsellor, who is trained to listen to talk through your feelings and help you find ways of dealing with them.
We have a team of dedicated counsellors who have extensive experience either personally or professionally within the field of sight loss. This is a service for anyone who has been diagnosed with macular disease. We also offer the same service to that person's family members. You can refer yourself or somebody else via our online form or you can contact us via our helpline on 0300 3030 111.

New laser treatment for diabetic macular oedema (DMO)
10/4/2023
For this My Macular and Me podcast we were joined by professor of ophthalmology, Noemi Lois, from Queen's University Belfast. She looks at the results of a recent trial for patients with diabetic macular oedema (DMO).
The trial set out to test two types of laser for treating patients with DMO, one standard laser, which has been available for many years, and another much newer laser. It was found that the newer laser could clear up mild DMO without producing a burn on the retina, unlike the standard laser.
The news of the trial is positive for those living with diabetes as it has found that this newer macular laser is a good treatment option.

BrightPage: a tool to help you read with macular disease
9/6/2023
Howard Moshtael, joins us for this episode of the My Macular and Me podcast to discuss his reading tool, BrightPage.
Whilst doing his PhD at Edinburgh University, Howard learnt that reading with central vision loss is easier if you don’t have to move your eyes. His idea was to find a tool which can scroll text in a natural way for reading. This would not be as a continuous scroll, but rather one that mimics the movements that our eyes make whilst reading. This way of reading turned out to be a great success and instantly boosted reading speed in both the fully and partially sighted.
