From Surgery to Meditation, Brain Optimization Insights from a Neurosurgeon - ft. Dr. Vokshoor

5/4/2020
“I always felt in neurosurgery, we were fantastic technicians and we just lacked well-rounded care. I always thought we needed to do more than surgery.” – Dr. Amir Vokshoor In today’s episode, Dr. Shah talks with neurosurgeon Dr. Amir Vokshoor. Dr. Vokshoor has practiced neurology for more than 20 years. He spent that last 10 creating an institute of research and philanthropy for brain science. After watching his own father’s health denigrate to death with Alzheimer’s disease, Dr. Vokshoor started asking deeper questions about brain health. The answers he’s found to deeply personal questions are phenomenal, but they apply to everyone who seeks brain optimization, and the dissolution of dementia-based diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and more. Living to Tell About Covid-19 - ft. Michael Yo

4/27/2020
“That's how bad it was. I can't even describe the pain I was in. I was texting with my wife because I couldn’t see her. Then you think about your kids, you know. I've got a three-year-old and a four-month-old, and I was like, this is the worst way to go.” – Michael Yo In today’s episode, Dr. Shah speaks candidly with Michael Yo who was likley infected with Covid-19 on a trip to New York – a vocational hazard as a travelling comedian. On his return, Yo developed a severely high fever. Soon after he was taken to the ER and then ICU because he couldn’t breathe. His lungs filled with liquid and his oxygen saturation levels plummeted. For people who think this virus isn’t deadly, think again. It was touch-and-go for Yo for almost a week. Doctors diligently used every possible method to cure Yo because he was an early patient. He was essentially a guinea pig. As Yo recently pointed out on his Twitter feed, “Flu 24,000 deaths last 8 months, Covid-19 43,000 deaths in 2 months.” Yo’s experience of almost dying alone in a hospital is a wake-up call to anyone not taking social distancing and other health measures to avoid Covid seriously. As Dr. Shah aptly describes it in this podcast, “10,000 people dying is nothing compared to 100,000 people losing their jobs.” What Yo and others learned from his harrowing experience could save people’s lives. Misconceptions abound, but facts stand solid. Listen in to learn why. How Viruses and Vaccines Work ft. Virologist - Morgan Freney

4/22/2020
“I don’t feel like I’m taking a risk studying pathogenic disease. I’m fascinated, and I want to take on that fight.” – Morgan Freney, Virologist In today’s episode, Dr. Shah speaks with Morgan Freney a virologist working at the University of Queensland in a lab that creates vaccines. She’s also pursuing a PhD in molecular virology. If you’re ready to take a deep dive into Coronavirus and what makes it a particularly stupefying threat, then Morgan is your go-to woman. She’s shaking up the world at just 25 years of age, making a significant dent in the education of others, and the development of virus-disabling medicine. Morgan started working on the Ebola vaccine when women and children were dying in Africa. She also worked on a vaccine for West Nile and Zika. Most recently she’s been attempting to crack a multi-virus vaccine that would crack Corona and other similar viruses – up to 15 at one time! Morgan has a special way of describing the life-cycle of a virus and what it does to your body so you can understand Corona, and other pathogens more fully. Boundless Book Launch: Upgrade Your Brain, Optimize Your Body & Defy Aging ft. Ben Greenfield

3/9/2020
“Speaking of Blue Zones, the hundred-and-nine year-old, or however old she is, like John Claremont, I think she recently passed away, but there are others, like John Coleman. They are gin chugging, cigarette smoking people. You know, folks who are living well past the age they should be living since they don't have cryotherapy chambers, NAD IVs, and infrared saunas. But they've got strong love and relationships and a robust social life and a belief in a higher power. . . Our whole family is gratitude-journaling together in the morning. I'm taking my kids through a meditation and prayer. At night we revisit gratitude. It's just this magical, magical way to live. I think more important than any chapter on fat loss or muscle gain or biohacking the brain or anything like that.” – Ben Greenfield In today’s episode, you get access to a special podcast from Ben Greenfield’s Boundless launch hosted by Next Health at Century City in LA. The Shift to Functional Medicine w/ Dr. Apostolos Lekkos

2/17/2020
“I was seeing how the medical system just wasn’t working in the ER. It was the same people coming in, and their drug list was just getting bigger and bigger. It was prescriptions to treat symptoms, and I thought—there has to be a better way.”– Dr. Lekkos In today’s episode, Dr. Shah and Kevin Peake talk with Dr. Lekkos, a former emergency room physician who shifted his entire paradigm to study functional medicine. Functional medicine is about optimizing your health so that you can put a fire out before it even starts, as opposed to calling in the specialists once the fire is blazing so high it’s about to consume the while building. This non-Western approach to medicine looks at your entire lifestyle to promote wellness at ground zero. Dr. Lekkos went from cutting people open in an ER to looking for the root cause of an illness, and then tailoring an individualized plan that takes into account a person’s lifestyle choices; including stress levels, diet, toxin exposure, childhood trauma, and a detailed mental and spiritual history. Many of the factors that Western medicine usually ignores, Dr. Lekkos uses like a sleuth to solve the mystery of your individualized health. Join us for the passionate journey Dr. Lekkos has taken to move from treating disease to optimizing wellness for his patients, and take some of his secrets with you to augment your own health. Nikki Sharp: Overcoming an Eating disorder and Supporting a Healthy Mind and Body

2/3/2020
“A friend once told me, only 3% of people have an eating disorder, but 97% of people have disordered eating.” – Nikki Sharp In today’s episode, Dr. Shah and Kevin Peake crack open some real talk with Nikki Sharp, a tour-de-force and former model who reveals some hard truths about our relationships to food based on her own journey through two severe, clinically-described eating disorders. Nikki’s not just any health and wellness blogger, her authenticity comes through in every word, as well as a vulnerability and heart that are rare in many people who are today talking about health today. Nikki’s books, including The Five-Day Real Food Detox are not a get-healthy quick recipe, but a way to start fresh and to install new eating habits that nourish you from the inside out. She’s not afraid to talk about her own issues with food, and how she’s overcome them: starting with how she loves herself, so that choosing good food is just one of many choices she makes to support a healthy mind and body. It may come as a surprise that an international model would ever binge eat and suffer from anorexia, but Nikki’s journey through these challenges helps us to reveal our own disordered relationships with food so that we can address eating disorders, body dysmorphia in the age of “perfection” on Instagram, and all other manner of image distortion and its myriad manifestations. Listening to this podcast, you won’t just want to follow Nikki because she’s beautiful on the outside, but because she tears down the walls concealing an important topic that has remained taboo for far too long. Dr. Ram Dandillaya: How Lifestyle Changes and Early Detection Can Reverse Your Chances of Developing Heart Disease

1/20/2020
“Inflammation doesn’t just lead to heart disease, but also to brain disease, liver disease, and all the cancers and all their different causes.” – Dr. Ram Dandillaya In today’s episode, Dr. Shah and Dr. Ram Dandillaya demystify the world’s number one killer – heart disease. Your heart pumps more than 2,000 gallons of blood through your veins every day, and acts as an electrical system that interfaces with your entire nervous system. Yet, few of us understand how the cardiovascular system works, let alone how to prevent the diseases that affect it. Fortunately, these two dynamos shed enormous light on this imperative topic. Dr. Ram has been in practice since 2006, but grew up in the same small town in New Jersey that Dr. Shah did. They discovered their mutual hometown at a recent dinner party, proving just how small the world is, but the scope of heart health knowledge they share in this podcast is vast. After saving several people’s lives together in recent mutual endeavors, Drs. Shah and Ram share ways to reverse this growing epidemic. High blood pressure affects 1 in 3 people in the US. More than 85 million people in the US live with some type of cardiovascular disease. It is one of the most widespread and costly diseases in the Western World, with over $320 billion spent annually to treat cardiovascular issues, but are statins the only way to combat this growing epidemic? How to Put Your Sleep Debt to Rest with Dr. Eric Kezirian

1/6/2020
“I mean, the last thing I want to do is surgery for sleep apnea when that's not the main thing that might be causing it. It might be a red herring, and that's part of why being board certified in sleep medicine is helpful to have enough knowledge not to be dangerous. Just enough knowledge to identify these things. Certainly that we can work on them before thinking about procedures or if we're going to go down that path.” – Dr. Eric Kezirian In today’s episode, Dr. Shah and Dr. Eric Kezirian share a life-changing talk about one of the most underrated subjects surrounding health – sleep. We spend ample time and energy looking into diet and exercise, but this third pillar – sleep – is critical to our overall health. A recent Forbes article suggested that 40% of Americans are sleeping less than 6 hours a night, and even children are now more sleep-deprived than ever. There has even been a movement suggesting that people can thrive on less than 5 hours of sleep nightly, but is this really true? Dr. Kezirian, a certified Otolaryngologist (nose and throat doctor), debunks some myths about sleep, reveals the real causes of sleep apnea, and how to optimize your sleep for greater health and peak performance. Drs. Kezirian and Shah uncover how – without adequate sleep, your entire body stops working as it should. Hormones that control detoxification of the brain and bodily tissues, regulate energy levels, your metabolism, and even hunger signals are all thrown out of whack. Sleep affects our mood, job performance, and athletic ability. If you’re looking for a possible culprit that may be contributing to you being overweight, listless, lacking energy, feeling apathetic or unmotivated, or you simply lack a zest for life, it is possible that you aren’t getting the quality sleep your body and mind so desperately need. Tune into this podcast to learn how to fix your most pressing sleep challenges, and dream easy tonight. Mona Sharma: How Mona Sharma Used Ashram Living and Simple Wisdom to Return from the Brink of Death

12/23/2019
“I would have lived with a pacemaker for the rest of my life. Not an option. Really not an option. I went back to my roots and spent 2 months in an ashram and healed everything.” – Mona Sharma In today’s episode, Mona Sharma talks with Dr. Shah, revealing ancient wisdom gleaned from residing in an ashram in her youth, coupled with the experience of a real-life health trauma while on the corporate sales grind in the high-end beauty industry. Facing the dread possibility of living with a pacemaker for the rest of her life, Sharma reconsidered everything about how she was living. Sharma comes from a unique background. Her father is East Indian. Her mother is Danish. She spent a large portion of her youth in an ashram. The tenets of her health as a child were clean eating, utilizing food as medicine, mindfulness, community, and allowing the mind and body to rest and digest every single day. Her jet-set life almost took her life, but she turned it all around. Sharma strayed from the simple wisdom gained in her youth. Finding herself in multiple cities a week, often waking up in hotel rooms not knowing where she was headed next, her health declined rapidly. Sharma gained 40 pounds after being put on beta blockers for a heart condition. Observing that doctors asked her nothing about her stress levels or what she was eating as her health continued to decline, she decided to take matters into her own hands. After undergoing not one, but multiple heart surgeries, Sharma re-examined her lifestyle to look for the root cause of a malady first discovered in her late teens – atrial tachycardia – but which later burgeoned into a live-or-die call-to-action, and her new life path. Sharma’s credentials as a certified nutritionist and yoga teacher after being a marketing trainer for brands like Christian Dior and Tom Ford are invaluable because so many people can relate to the burnout and negative health-impacts that can accompany a corporate job that looks glamorous on paper. Sharma was also recently on Red Table Talk. Will Smith is one of her clients. He subscribes to her simple eating and mindfulness insights, and now so can we. Join Mona Sharma and Dr. Shah as they discuss her fascinating journey from an ashram to cities like Paris and London, and then back to the ashram to find healing secrets that she shares with us with passion.
