#329 Breast Cancer and Standard of Care - Managing Expectations to Support Treatment and Emotional Health

3/15/2024
Stepping into the medical system after a breast cancer diagnosis is like a baby taking its first breath outside the womb. It’s a shocking, unfamiliar environment that most of us have no idea what we’ll be expected to navigate. Yet we also have the expectation that our oncologist will take care of everything we need. In my own breast cancer experience I found that this expectation led to a tremendous amount of anger and frustration. At times I thought I just got stuck with a bad doctor. Then I started coaching other women and heard the same story and saw the same anger over and over. In this episode, I’ll offer you a perspective on the standard of care that can lead you to have a much more empowered, supportive experience and relieve you of the long-term suffering that anger and resentment add to an already difficult experience. #327 Breast Cancer and the Shame Cycle - How Beating Yourself Up Impacts Your Health

3/8/2024
In today’s episode, we’re talking about a topic that touches many of us but often stays hidden in the shadows: shame. Shame is this tricky little beast that can sneak up on us, especially when we're navigating the challenging waters of breast cancer recovery. It’s more than just a fleeting feeling; it can actually have some serious effects on both our mental and physical health. It can crank up our stress and anxiety levels, making us feel like we’re constantly walking on eggshells. Worse, it can lead us down the path to depression, chip away at our self-esteem, and even make us want to hide away from the world. On the physical side of things, shame can mess with our brains, leaving us feeling foggy or forgetful. It can put a damper on our immune system, and take a toll on our hearts, our guts, and even how well we sleep at night. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome shame and its sneaky effects. Check out today’s episode and see if the insight I share can help you identify and break out of the shame cycle so you can love yourself more and treat yourself better. For us breast cancer survivors, the balance of essential fatty acids is not just a minor detail. In this episode, we'll dive into the role of healthy fats, particularly polyunsaturated fats, in supporting our well-being Research suggests that a diet rich in omega-3s and balanced in omega-6s could play a role in reducing inflammation and possibly impacting breast cancer outcomes. #325 How Imperfect Actions After Breast Cancer Can Lead to Amazing Outcomes

3/1/2024
In 2011 when I heard the words, “You have breast cancer.” It was scary, I was confused, overwhelmed, and ignorant of all the things involved in the journey that was to come. In 2020 when I heard the words, “You have cancer throughout your body.” I thought my life was over. But, after I recovered from the shock I made a decision to figure out how other people healed from cancer and how I could do it too. I’ve been on this path for nearly three and a half years now. There’s been a lot of time, effort, determination, frustration, money, fear, joy, excitement, and learning along the way. It hasn’t been linear and I haven’t always stuck to my plan but I continue to work on getting better and in this episode, I’m going to share with you the results of all the imperfect actions I’ve taken along the way. I say imperfect actions because who knew if they would work or not? Who knew if they were the “right” things to do or not? We never really know until we’re on the other side. I hope this episode will give you the encouragement and support to let go of second-guessing and jump into taking your own imperfect actions on the way to creating your life that’s better than before breast cancer™ Helpful links: Work with Laura The Metabolic Approach to Cancer Radical Remission Follow me on Social Media: Facebook Instagram Pinterest YouTube

#320 Breast Cancer and the Beauty of Biodiversity

2/13/2024
The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer can lead to a powerful disconnect from the body. Many survivors feel betrayed by their own bodies and often that distance piles onto existing body image issues. Sadly, when we lose connection with our bodies, there’s no way we can care for them in the ways necessary to support healing. We lose sight of the magical interplay of our biology and how every part of our system has an important role and how strong and vital our connection to nature is. Over recent decades this has led to a frightening reduction in the healthy biodiversity of the human gut. In this episode, I hope to help you understand the beautiful ecosystem that is your body, and how important it is to understand the simple steps you can take to support increasing your own biodiversity. Our gut health isn’t just a matter of poo. Like the roots of a great tree is the foundation of the forest, our gut health affects our entire system, and getting to know and love how to support gut health can be a game changer for your body. #319 Breast Cancer and Breaking the Code of Silence to Form Deeper Connections

2/9/2024
If there’s one thing I could change about the experience of breast cancer, (even though it’s hard to pick only one) It would be the compulsion to hold everything in because of the fear of worrying or upsetting someone else. All emotions are a part of the human experience, and having the skill to express, process, and release negative emotions so that you have the space in your life to increase positive emotions is critical in the healing process. In this episode, I’ll share a personal story with you that got me thinking about the pain we bring on ourselves when we won’t express our struggles even to ourselves. I’ll tell you some of the reasons why that happens, and I’ll give you some ideas of how you can change that. We must work together to break the silent suffering that too many of us endure after a breast cancer diagnosis. Listen now and let’s start that process. #318 Breast Cancer, Stress and Trauma - It Didn't Start With You

2/6/2024
Today, we're diving into a fascinating topic: how generational trauma affects our epigenetics, and the profound impact stress has on our bodies. Generational trauma, a term that's gaining more recognition, refers to the emotional and psychological impacts of traumatic experiences that are not just lived by one generation but are passed down through the next. This isn't merely psychological; it's embedded in our very biology, in our epigenetics. Epigenetics is the study of how our behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way our genes work. Interestingly, these changes do not alter our DNA sequence but can change how our body reads a DNA sequence. Research has shown that the stressors our ancestors faced, the hardships, and the emotional turmoil, can leave a mark on our genes, influencing our health risks, stress responses, and even our behaviors. This understanding tells us that our family's past trauma may play a role in our own health story, including our journey with conditions like breast cancer. The good news is that awareness is the first step towards healing. By acknowledging the roots of our stress and understanding its biological basis, we can begin to heal not just our minds but our bodies. In this episode, we'll explore strategies for recognizing signs of generational trauma, methods to address and heal these deep-seated issues, and how we can alter our epigenetic expressions for better health. Our bodies may carry the stories of our past, but they also hold the potential for healing. Together, let's embark on this healing journey, transforming the legacy we pass on to the next generation.
