Arts & Culture Podcasts

Drew and Sam are actors. They haven’t won any Academy Awards yet, and neither of them is in line to be the new James Bond (sorry Sam), but between them they do have over half a century’s worth of experience in the industry. Many months ago a combination of boredom, significantly reduced work opportunities (thanks pandemic!) and overactive and under-stimulated imaginations inspired them to create a podcast, and somehow they’re still at it. Join the Drewling Samantics chaps every Sunday (or download and listen later) as they give an entertaining insight into how their industry works - from modelling to voiceover, theatre to film, and television to streamed media, the gents talk about all areas of performance artistry, giving an insider view that is sometimes humorous, often eye-opening or poignant, and at times just downright strange! With regular guest appearances and the odd special ‘on location’ segment, Drewling Samantics brings something unique and fresh to the world of podcasts from two normal blokes, working in a rather abnormal industry.

Season Ten: Best of Drew & Sam

4/21/2024
Season Ten – Best of Drew & Sam Drew and Sam very much enjoyed looking back at highlights of their guest visits in last week’s show, and today they are equally confident in putting a smile on the faces of all their loyal followers and fans by sharing some of their own best bits of Season Ten. There has been much to discuss - news, industry controversy, awards and rewards, sad losses, tradition and superstition were just some of the subjects the lads broached, and there were plenty more too. There was even an episode devoted to the perks occasionally enjoyed by Drew and Sam when they’ve been working on special projects, and this is certainly one of the perks of Drewling Samantics – the chance to listen or watch again, with Drew and Sam at their very best. Dip in for a first-time sample, or enjoy the clips featured in this special Season Ten compilation over again, before Drew and Sam unveil the surprises and guests in the rapidly approaching eleventh season. Season Ten - Best of Guests

4/14/2024
Season Ten – Best of Guests It’s been a season of great variety, with the guests dropping in on Drewling Samantics representing many industry disciplines, and (directly or indirectly) many countries too. Drew and Sam have had the pleasure of talking to Allan Turner-Ward, Tony Jopia, Matt Trayler, Tyler Marlow, Paula Fareri and Leo Abad over the past three and a bit months, and to say this collection of performers is enormously talented is quite the understatement! Their fabulous array of visitors have taken on and mastered many vocations and specialties, with roles, jobs and skills including filmmaking and production, DJ’ing, musical theatre performance, speaking (and singing in) multiple languages, directing, presenting radio, acting, educating, event managing, and even taking to the stage as a pantomime Dame! As well as this impressive collection of talents, they have covered the world between them, touching foreign soil in places such as Chile, Italy, the Middle East, America, France, China, Germany, and... Whitley Bay! This once-per-season show always gives Drew and Sam the chance to remember some highlights from the wonderful people who were kind and generous enough to share their experiences, stories and time while visiting DrewlingSamantics, and Season Ten’s iteration is certainly no different. Of course it’s also a brilliant opportunity for fans and followers to relive (or for new listeners and/or viewers, to experience for the first time) the thrill and enjoyment of what these hugely talented individuals brought to everyone’s favourite podcast! S10E13 - Ten-tatively Paused

4/7/2024
Ten-tatively Paused People often say you should never look back, however there is always an exception to every rule which today the Drewling Samantics boys are glad to exercise, with every reason to look back over what has been such a great season! Once again we have reached the time where Drew and Sam round off their exploits, ruminate on what has been experienced, and head into a well earned break. It has been an enormously interesting and entertaining season, with a fantastic variety of debates and discussions, as well as numerous news topics and stories to follow, and not forgetting of course the hugely enjoyable visits from some brilliant industry professionals. They also reflect back on an idea that proved to be extremely popular with listeners and viewers alike, where they took the opportunity to put themselves under the microscope by taking questions from past guests, and, whether you consider it to be brave and revealing, or weird and wonderful, it is likely to be something they will be doing again in the not too distant future! But this week they aren’t just taking a look back over the previous episodes, as there is still room for a more chat and deliberation. So before we dive into our last episodes of the season , the always entertaining ‘Best Of’ episodes, why not join Drew and Sam to bid farewell to Season Ten, and brace themselves for Season Eleven! S10E12 - In the Fast La(i)ne

3/31/2024
In the Fast La(i)ne Today the Drewling Samantics chaps are joined but someone so fresh faced and youthful that it’s enough to make them both feel old! Yes this show sees the lads welcome their most recent guest, the bright and brilliant talent that is musical theatre performer Leo Abad. Having not long graduated from Laine Theatre Arts stage school, Leo was straight off on a national tour, taking on (among other roles) the part of the White Rabbit in the wonderful Shrek The Musical! This is certainly not his first professional credit though, as he appeared in panto with one half of the Drewling Samantics team, and, as professional debuts go, it was definitely an eventful experience as Leo explains (no, not just because he had to share the stage with Sam!) Leo is on the road with Shrek for a few more weeks before that magical adventure comes to its end, however this talented young man won’t have an opportunity to stop, as he jumps immediately into his first West End contract! But of course, which show is it that Leo is joining you ask? Well you’ll have to tune in to find out more as it’s not as simple a Leo doing a big reveal... or is it?! Another fabulous guest makes for another fabulous episode; Leo is a true delight, full of energy, enthusiasm and ambition, and has a smile that lights up every room. The Drewling Samantics boys are honoured to welcome him for this fantastic interview and they’re sure you’ll find him as entertaining as they did. S10E11 - Perks of the Job

3/24/2024
Perks of the Job The Drewling Samantics boys are back for another glorious week of podcast fun, and this week, although it is just the pair of them, Drew and Sam certainly seem to be in a good mood. After kicking off as they always do with some choice industry stories, the chaps soon get stuck in to this week’s main topic. Many will have noticed that Sam has been a little cryptic and mysterious regarding a specific job recently, and today some details are finally revealed - and much more besides! We know that Drew and Sam can occasionally be a little grumpy, and like all of us they enjoy a good moan about their work, but more often than not they are upbeat, optimistic and love every minute. This week’s subject may go some way to explaining why, as Sam gives an insight into the fabulous time he had on this recent job and he and Drew swap stories about the times when they have had to pinch themselves - “Am I really getting paid to do this?!” But before you think this is just an opportunity for the lads to indulge in a bit of a ‘brag fest’, it is all good humoured and they have been just as surprised by some of this extra bonuses as you will be. So tune in to hear about some rather special rewards, and then return again next week for a visit from a truly shining star of a guest – the final one of this season. S10E10 - Outstanding in Anyone's Language

3/17/2024
Outstanding in Anyone’s Language Everyone involved with Drewling Samantics loves a guest, be that all the lovely listeners and viewers, or indeed the boys themselves, and Drew and Sam are definitely loving the visit this week of the wonderful Paola Fareri. Multi-talented and multi-lingual, Paola joins the chaps from her home, for the moment, in Paris. And it is “for the moment”, as her feet hardly seem to touch the ground! At the time of recording with our podcasting pair, Paola is in Paris performing in Lion King the Musical, but in this episode she talks about her travels and the many roles that have taken her all around Europe. And as if all that travelling isn’t challenging enough, along with the change of character Paola often changes the language she works in – amazing! This is certainly one performer who relishes her work, and she speaks passionately about her favourite roles and how they have affected her life as an actor. Drew and Sam have spoken to understudies and swings in the past but in Paola’s case there are additional challenges when approaching swing roles in different languages and countries. Charming and fascinating as the lady herself, Paola’s Drewling Samantics appearance should not be missed – so what are you waiting for?! S10E09 - Prizewinning Performance

3/10/2024
Prizewinning Performance As is the case with practically any kind of job or vocation, the people working in the entertainment industry can be a fairly temperamental lot at times. It’s probably not all that surprising, given the unpredictability of the career they have chosen, being so fraught with challenges and rejection at one moment, but then oozing with triumph and success at the next. It goes without saying though that the one thing enjoyed unanimously, is a little flattery and praise, and this is the time for just that, as we are in the full throws of awards season, culminating in the “big ones” this weekend. That, of course, means the Oscars - a glittering, star-studded, red-carpeted evening of praise and reward (as well as some inevitable disappointment) as the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences makes it choices and recognises those at the top of their game. Though their nominations appear to have gotten lost in the post, Drew and Sam won’t be left out this weekend, and in today’s show take the opportunity to make some predictions, talk Oscars facts and records, and enjoy the build-up to one of the biggest film events of the year. Another great episode that is surely worth a listen, even if it’s just to see if the boys educated guesses match up to the decisions of those in prestigious positions, and/or (shocking as it may be to consider!) if you agree with them! S10E08 - Park-Life

3/3/2024
Park-Life After the grilling Drew and Sam received last week from their past guests, the Drewling Samantics boys return things to normal today as they seize the opportunity to put some questions to, and hear stories from another fabulous visitor! Leaping into the podcast world of Drew and Sam is the wonderful Tyler Marlow, actor, pantomime dame, and holiday park entertainment team leader. Tyler lifts the lid on his work as head of all things entertainment for one of the biggest holiday park organisations in the country. Much maligned and spoofed in shows like the enormously successful Hi De Hi, holiday parks are now recognised as one of the major getaway destinations for thousands of families throughout the year. They are also a superb training ground for young entertainers, and many of our best loved performers cut their teeth and honed their skills as ‘coat entertainers’. In this fascinating interview Tyler shows how much talent, dedication and hard work is required to make the shows and events such a success, and just how he goes about managing the people who play such an important part in so many younger (and older!) people’s lives. Not only that but Tyler is also full to the brim of knowledge and passion when it comes to working as a pantomime dame, and even recently completed a Christmas season with one half of this very podcast presenting pair – and somehow he’s lived to tell the tale! So tune in now to find out what Drew and Sam chatted about when they were visited by this enormously talented and highly professional performer who quite simply has show-business flowing in his veins! S10E07 - Turning the Tables... AGAIN!

2/25/2024
Turning the Tables... AGAIN! They’re at it again! Yup, this week Drew and Sam face their past guests for a second time, bringing us all another session of inverted interrogation - side note, wouldn’t that have been a better title?! Anyway... if you enjoyed the last episode as much as they did (I mean why wouldn’t you?!), this latest show is another treat for the ears and eyes, that proves just as popular with the boys as it does their previous visitors - judging by the fascinating range of questions demonstrated anyway! The lads owe a huge amount to those that have graced the Drewling Samantics HQ with their presence, not only for giving up their valuable time to share their knowledge and talent in their own individual episodes, but in this case for contributing to these alternative style interviews. Reflective, honest, philosophical, technical, speculative, fun and personal are just a few types of answers that Drew and Sam reveal, and they may even learn some new things about each other while sharing with listeners and viewers too. Our podcasting pair are pleased and proud to add this episode to Drewling Samantics’ tenth season, and, we’re sure all will agree, the quality just keeps coming. S10E06 - West Meets East

2/18/2024
West Meets East There’s no telling where life might take you, especially if you are prepared to take a risk or two, and this week Drew and Sam welcome a guest who has certainly taken a few risks – and fortunately reaped the benefits as a result. Matt Traylor is an international performer and acting coach who is particularly highly skilled when it comes to imparting knowledge and guidance upon others, and this talent has taken him on an extremely interesting and diverse path. He completed his training at the famous E15 drama school and then left to pursue his acting career in much the same way as many other young actors, but when a chance job application and a phone call out of the blue took Matt on a fascinating and life changing journey, his career really began in earnest. Curious? Well, join the Drewling Samantics boys as Matt explains more and shares some enlightening and startling facts about his trip. Sam and Matt also reminisce about their time working together on a show that stuck in both their memories - one that has been mentioned on the show before, but certainly not in this detail. Another great guest and another fabulous Drewling Samantics episode, what more could you possibly want?! S10E05 - Turning the Tables

2/11/2024
Turning the Tables Drew and Sam promised something different for this week’s show and they’ve certainly hit that brief! The shoe is on the other foot, the roles have been reversed, they’ve given it the ol’ switcheroo – however you want to put it, this newest Drewling Samantics episode sees the lads putting themselves in the position usually occupied by their wonderful guests, as it is they who are being quizzed and questioned today! Yes as part of this latest podcast we are treated to a form of video interrogation from a selection of previous visitors that has Drew and Sam thinking deeply, as they answer all sorts of intriguing questions regarding their lives and careers, both their professional and personal opinions on certain topics, and more - there’s even a chance for them to delve into the spiritual and philosophical too! It’s an absolute pleasure to see some old faces putting the chaps on the spot, but with so many amazing guests over the past few years how have the boys managed to fit it all in? Well there’s an answer to that too, but it can only be revealed by listening or watching. So join Drew, Sam and a whole host of industry professionals now, and, if you are a YouTube viewer, stick around to the end for a rather specials video contribution from editing genius Phillip Lee. S10E04 - Never Work a Day in Your Life

2/4/2024
Never Work a Day in Your Life Drew and Sam are back for another week of news and chat, and another brilliant and talented guest! To start with the boys bring updates up on industry news affecting actors and musicians that they’d previously discussed on Drewling Samantics, and talk about the increasing influence and hard work of the actors’ union Equity, reflecting on the mechanics of the industry - both positive and negative. But that is swiftly followed by something that is 100% positive - the visit of the wonderful Tony Jopia, a successful and passionate filmmaker who has been devoted to his craft since he was a mere whippersnapper! Just how young Tony was when bitten by the film bug is impressive, and the story of his early life and career is fascinating. Fast forward to now, and with no sign of stopping and some very heartfelt and personal projects on the slate, Tony certainly is a delight to listen to. So yet again another fabulous episode not to be misses, along with a little hint at an equally interesting episode to come next week, apparently they might be changing things up a bit...! S10E03 - Stagey-stitious

1/28/2024
Stagey-stitious So after a few weeks of trying Drew and Sam have finally managed it, they’re back together to record an episode in the same room! And what’s more is the chaps are even both on the beers, there really is no holding back – but let’s be honest, when have they ever?! It certainly is a full on show too, with plenty of delicate controversy to discuss as they revisit two old news stories that have come back round with further developments, and are certain to provoke a fair few comments (which of course is thoroughly encouraged!) The boys then move on to lighter matters, and dive into solving a few questions around some well-known (and a few less common) theatrical superstitions and sayings used in the entertainment world. Why are “legs broken”? How come no one whistles? And are the French really being rude when they shout “Merde” on opening night?! These and others are addressed, and, whatever the answers, it’s certain Drew and Sam won’t be saying M*cbeth anytime soon...! So make the most of the Drewling Samantics pair being back together in person, as sadly they’ll return to behind their respective computer screens for the next episode. However they will be joined by a new and exciting guest, so join them now, and join them then! S10E02 - Mixing it Up

1/21/2024
Mixing It Up Season Ten is moving along very nicely, and to add considerable pace to Drew and Sam’s second outing of the year is their first guest of the season. Joining our podcasting pair this week is the brilliant Allan Turner-Ward, a man with so many strings to his bow he’s practically a one-man orchestra! Allan has travelled the world, from his boyhood home in Bournemouth to America, Europe, the Middle-East and beyond, and then back again, spreading music and entertainment all the way throughout his journey. As a music producer, DJ and performer he follows his passion and dreams wherever they may lead, and has formed boy bands and groups, written a number one hit record in Europe, worked for Disney studios, been a semi-finalist on Britain’s Got Talent and even worked on The Apprentice in the US for Donald Trump! A fascinating and fast paced episode is what Allan and the boys deliver this week, definitely not to be missed. S10E01 - X

1/14/2024
X It’s here - the hugely anticipated and long awaited (even longer than expected to be fair!) return of Drewling Samantics! Yes Drew, Sam and of course PicNick are back, and just in case the episode title is slightly too cryptic, they are back for Season Ten. Double figures, who would have thunk it?! There’s a little catching up to do first after a busy Christmas period spent as Santa Claus and pantomime villain for Drew and Sam respectively, and then back to business Drewling Samantics style! There’s plenty to discuss, despite it being so early in the year, including the first of the big awards ceremonies, the Golden Globes, and the powerful, provocative and extremely topical drama “Mr Bates versus the Post Office”. And on top of that the boys hint at plans for forthcoming episodes, with lots of new guests, new subjects, and even new features promised, to keep all fans and followers joining them throughout the forthcoming weeks. So keep the comments and requests coming as Drew and Sam love hearing from subscribers, and of course, keep listening and watching! Season Nine: Best of Drew & Sam

11/26/2023
Season Nine – Best of Drew & Sam Drew and Sam are clearly feeling quite reflective this week, and that’s rather convenient as it’s the final episode of the season, which in turn means it’s one of their most enjoyable tasks, where they look back over all the shows of Season Nine and choose their favourite moments and clips for us to relish! The past fifteen weeks have certainly been full to the brim with interesting discussions, funny stories, in-depth debates, and everything else in between, so there was definitely a huge amount of content for the boys to wade through and select their highlights from – which they do rather well if we may say so! With topics ranging from alternative jobs and extreme weather, all the way to ingenious inventions and (almost!) getting caught short, there is a cracking variety of chat to revisit with plenty for everyone to enjoy. So why not see out this season in style, by joining the Drewling Samantics chaps to relive some tantalising podcasting titbits – there’s also no better way to get ready for the brand new season which begins early next year. 2023, you’ve been a blast! Season Nine: Best of Guests

11/19/2023
Season Nine – Best of Guests The Drewling Samantics boys say it every time, because they really mean it every time – they are enormously grateful to the fantastic group of guests that have joined them this season! Looking back, which is exactly what this special highlights episode is all about, there seems to have been a theme to the guests across Season Nine, in that they are all taking action to make a change. First guest Lisa Reisner left her own country and learned a whole new language or two to move her career on, action indeed. Second visitor all-action martial artist Michael Hoad, furthered his loves of both physical training and acting by combining the two. Next, Simon Floyd spoke about taking action in his community (and in others) to make theatre with a message. Episode eight’s Kevin “Krazy Kev” Agget moved from ‘Red Coat’ to children’s performer and panto producer so is certainly all about action in the theatre and on stage. Terry Hayden sprung into action when he saw his local theatre about to close and is making big waves - there is still work to do but there will be a pantomime this Christmas! And last, but no means least, Gareth Locke stuntman and actor graced Drewling Samantics HQ, and he is a man for whom inactivity would be impossible and unheard of! So, time for fans and followers to take action as well, and revisit some great moments from the exciting and talented guests of Season Nine. S09E13 - It’s Good To Talk

11/12/2023
It’s Good To Talk Sadly, this week’s episode of Drewling Samantics marks the beginning of the end for another season. But, as the boys remind us, there is still a little more left before we finally say farewell - and of course there’s another season rapidly approaching too. Enough to put a smile on the face of even the grumpiest podcaster! That said, it isn’t all smiles this week, with the lads dipping into far more serious areas and discussing mental and physical health within the industry. Looking after yourself and fellow performers is very important, and the issue, as past and more recent events prove, is something that is never too far away from any of us – regardless of the role you hold with the world of entertainment. The clown hiding their tears is an old cliché, but is perhaps more true than any of us may be comfortable to admit. Drew and Sam offer their own experiences and delicately pick apart a subject that deserves revisiting. Talking of revisiting (it wouldn’t be Drewling Samantics without a good segue!) the next two outing for the boys will be a chance for fans and followers to enjoy top moments from this season, in the two eagerly awaited ‘Best Of’ shows. So check out today’s episode, then tune in for the highlights compilations, starting next week with “Season Nine - Best of Guests”. S09E12 - Locked and Loaded

11/5/2023
Locked and Loaded Feeling a bit sluggish? Lacking motivation? Need a touch of excitement? Drewling Samantics has just the cure, or rather, just the guest for you. This week the boys welcome Gareth Locke, actor, stunt performer, and absolute bundle of energy! Along with brilliant performances in major movies and independent films, Gareth is working towards perhaps one of the most respected and elusive qualifications in the creative industries - becoming a fully fledged member of the British Stunt Register. He explains how the register is constructed, and how the current and aspiring members, better known as ‘stunties’, specialise in several disciplines suited to their skills and strengths. To say he pursues his ambition non-stop is no exaggeration, training when not working and never seeming to relax, so we can all be certain his success is only a short time away – a matter of when, not if. He is also a man with a personal philosophy about work that has obviously paid off as his recent appearances (both those he can talk about, and those he has to remain tight-lipped on) very much prove... Drew and Sam thoroughly enjoy meeting and chatting to this young man, and all listeners and viewers are sure to as well. So make the most of this final guest of Season Nine, and eagerly await his almost guaranteed return at a later date to reveal those tantalising professional secrets. S09E11 - If I Were Not Upon The Stage

10/29/2023
If I Were Not Upon The Stage The chaps at Drewling Samantics take all subject matter very seriously, always do appropriate research, gather all the facts possible, and bring their thorough findings and views to us listeners and viewers. This week in particular this is rather obvious, as one of the boys has perhaps enjoyed that process a little too much (if that’s such a thing) but interestingly enough it connects rather well to some industry greats who have sadly exited stage left. As it turns out, when they are paying their tributes, one half of the podcasting pair reveals that some of the recently departed could have ended up with quite different careers instead of their stage and screen successes, and following this trail means Drew and Sam are able to discuss a, perhaps larger than expected, extended list of actors and creatives, who aspired to other futures, or enjoyed surprising alternative careers before becoming the people we recognise now. We’re all sure to be as surprised and fascinated by these facts as the lads are as they discover them (one before the other of course!), but as Drewling Samantics is all about bringing different content and exciting guests week after week, it is certainly not out of the ordinary - what more encouragement is needed?!
