"Poor Things"

12/9/2023
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Tom O'Brien. Today, we are reviewing the newest film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, "Poor Things," starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott & Jerrod Carmichael. Re-uniting Lanthimos, Stone, and screenwriter Tony McNamara after the award-winning success of "The Favourite," their latest collaboration has received even more positive reviews, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was a highlight on this year's film festival circuit. What do we think of it now that it has finally been released in theaters? Tune in as we discuss the story, its soon-to-be iconic cinematic heroin, the performances, design, and overall aesthetic for one of the year's most well-crafted films, and more, including its awards season chances, in our SPOILER-FILLED review. 12/8/2023
"Poor Things" had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received arguably the best reviews of the festival, winning the Golden Lion for Best Film in the process before screening at the Telluride and New York Film Festivals to equal raves and rapturous response from critics and audiences. The highly creative film is now playing in limited release from Searchlight Pictures, and we have a few interviews from the film we'd like to share with you. First up is my paired interview with the film's leading actress and co-producer, Academy Award-winner Emma Stone, and director and co-producer Academy Award-nominee Yorgos Lanthimos. After that, Ema Sasic speaks with the film's screenwriter, Academy Award-nominee Tony McNamara. And to end, I had a lovely chat with another of the film's stars, Academy Award-nominee Willem Dafoe. Interview With "Anselm" Director Wim Wenders

12/7/2023
German filmmaker Wim Wenders is a cinematic legend who has given us many classic films, including "Paris, Texas," "Wings Of Desire," "Until the End of the World," "Buena Vista Social Club," "Pina," "The Salt of the Earth," this year's "Perfect Days" and now, his latest documentary "Anselm." Shot in stunning 3D, the look at German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer's works of art is striking in its form and execution by Wenders. The Academy Award-nominated director was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his latest film, which you can listen to below. The film will receive a limited release from Janus Films this weekend in New York and is up for your consideration for Best Documentary Feature Film. Interview With "Memory" Star Peter Sarsgaard

12/5/2023
"Memory" had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where actor Peter Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his performance in Michel Franco's latest film. Acting opposite Jessica Chastain, Sarsgaard convincingly plays a man with dementia in a surprisingly uplifting human drama and love story where light can be found in the sometimes darkest places. He was kind enough to spend a few moments of his time following the film's screening at the AFI Film Festival, talking with us about his performance in the film, working with Chastain, Franco, and more. Ketchup Entertainment will give the film an awards qualifying run on December 22nd before releasing it in more theaters on January 5th, 2024. It is eligible for your consideration in all categories, most notably in Best Supporting Actor for Sarsgaard. Please be sure to check out the film and enjoy this wonderful conversation. Thank you! Interviews With "May December" Star Charles Melton & Screenwriter Samy Burch

12/4/2023
"May December" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, receiving positive reviews for Todd Haynes' direction, the performances from Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton, and the writing from Samy Burch. Shortly after its screening at the New York Film Festival (and free of the writer's strike), Samy Burch spoke with Ema Sasic about her experience working on the film. And a few weeks later, after his Gotham win for Outstanding Supporting Performance (and a day before he would go on to win the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor alongside Burch's win for Best Screenplay), Charles Melton gave me a few moments of his time to dig deep into the character of Joe Yoo. The film is now streaming on Netflix and is up for your consideration for the 96th Academy Awards in all eligible categories. "Safe"

11/30/2023
For this month's second throwback podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte and Dan Bayer to discuss Todd Haynes' first collaboration with Academy Award-winner Julianne Moore, "Safe" (1995), also starring Peter Friedman, Xander Berkeley, Susan Norman, Kate McGregor-Stewart & James LeGros. Steeped in ambiguity with many interpretations, the film has inspired a tremendous amount of discussion over the years and has endured as one of the best films of the '90s despite its modest release, which saw it gain very little awards recognition or box office success. What do we think of it nearly thirty years later as we get ready for Haynes' latest film with Moore, "May December?" Tune in as we discuss Moore's performances, the film's themes, the cinematography, the score, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you, and enjoy! A Behind The Scenes Look At "John Wick: Chapter 4"

11/29/2023
"John Wick: Chapter 4" is the culmination of years of hard work, creative ambition, and four exhilarating films that gave audiences an iconic new action movie character worth rooting for. The fourth installment of the franchise, started by director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves in 2014, has gone on to achieve the highest critical and financial success for the franchise, leaving audiences clamoring for more as the talents behind the scenes pushed the action film genre to new heights they had never seen before. Director Chad Stahelski, cinematographer Dan Laustsen, and supervising sound editor Mark Stoeckinger were all kind enough to lend their insight into the making of such a beloved and challenging technical film where the stunts, camera work, and sound are all operating at the highest level. It's literally one of the finest action films ever crafted and is even making a case for why stunts should finally be honored at the Oscars. Please take a moment to listen to these interviews and check out the film, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories for this year's Academy Awards. Thank you, and enjoy! Interview With "Silent Night" Star Joel Kinnaman

11/28/2023
Joel Kinnaman is no stranger to the action film genre. After starring in large films such as the 2014 "Robocop," both "Suicide Squad" and "The Suicide Squad" and the television series "Altered Carbon," he may have found his most physically and emotionally demanding role to date in legendary director John Woo's newest film "Silent Night." Having to play the role of a father who goes on a quest for revenge over the holidays with no lines of dialogue, the film relies on Kinnaman's physical performance to drive most of the story. Joel was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which will be released in theaters from Lionsgate on December 1st. "Napoleon"

11/22/2023
For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer & Tom O'Brien. Today, we are reviewing the newest film from director Ridley Scott, "Napoleon," starring Joaquin Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby, and Tahar Rahim. Based on the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, the historical epic contains large battle scenes, petulant behavior, coup d'états, marital drama, and enough Joaquin Phoenix memes to last us a lifetime. The film is an odd mixture of tones, creative ambition, and misfires. What did we ultimately think of it, though? Tune in as we discuss Scott's direction, David Scrape's screenplay, the performances from Phoenix and Kirby, the drama, the action, the comedy(?!), its awards season potential, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review.
