IT'S ALIVE: Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and the Casting of Frankenstein
9/26/2023
Screenwriter, producer, and author Julian David Stone joins the podcast to discuss his new novel, IT'S ALIVE, and the fascinating story about the last-minute casting of Frankenstein.
The story involves Bela Lugosi, who was at the height of his popularity having just come off his hit DRACULA (1931), and Boris Karloff, a relatively unknown journeyman actor. And pulling the strings is young 23-year-old Junior Laemmle, head of production at Universal Pictures and son of studio founder Carl Laemmle. Along the way we meet director James Whale, discuss the involvement of Lon Chaney, and explore the backdrop of 1930s Hollywood. It's a fascinating look into the real-life events behind one of the most enduring films and most important developments in the evolution of the Universal Monsters.

GAY PURR-EE: Judy Garland, Chuck Jones, and the Fascinating Story Behind this Forgotten Animation Classic
9/7/2023
GAY PURR-EE (1962) is a forgotten classic of 1960s animation. But the newly remastered Blu-ray release from the Warner Archive has restored the film to the rich, vibrant colors and sound that showcases the original artistry of Chuck Jones and Judy Garland.
Animation and film historian Jerry Beck, film historian and Judy Garland expert John Fricke, and Warner Bros' George Feltenstein join the podcast to discuss the production history of the film, how Judy Garland was brought on board, and why the film has struggled to attain the stature it rightly deserves. We also provide a full review of the stunning new Blu-ray remaster, all of the robust extras, and an explanation of the differences between the film sound and the previously released film soundtrack.
"Gay Purr-ee" was ahead of its time and poorly marketed by UPA and Warner Bros upon its initial release. While this new Warner Archive Blu-ray cannot rectifiy the past, it showcases the artistry and importance of the film for animation fans, Judy Garland devotees, and film collectors everywhere, and will hopefully lead to a newfound appreciation for the brilliance of the film.

Shaft, Enter the Dragon, and The Batman: A Conversation with Michael Stradford
8/23/2023
My former colleague at Warner Bros and creative executive, Michael Stradford joins the podcast to talk about three iconic films. We start off with SHAFT (1971) and the impact that film had on him as a 10-year-old boy in Cleveland. Then we discuss his first memories of watching ENTER THE DRAGON (1973) and his impressions of Bruce Lee. We reflect on the enduring influence of Bruce Lee and how ENTER THE DRAGON revolutionized martial arts films and Hollywood. We also critique the current Warner Bros 4K release of ENTER THE DRAGON for the 50th anniversary of the film, and what the lack of any new extras says about the current state of physical media at the major studios. This leads to a discussion of the great work being done by many smaller boutique labels who have stepped into the void by creating exceptional box sets and extras. We then transition to a more positive discussion of the fantastic extras Stradford produced for THE BATMAN (2022) release. This is a great example of a studio and filmmaker working in tandem to produce over two hours of high-quality extras. We close with an engaging discussion on Stradford's books on Miles Davis and model Steve Holland, and his newest venture, the graphic novel "Fargo Hell on Wheels."

Preserving the Past: Warner Bros. Corporate Archive
8/9/2023
Ever wondered what's the difference between the Warner Archive and Warner Bros Corporate Archive? We sit down with Warner Bros. archivist Jeff Briggs, and George Feltenstein from the Warner Archive, to discuss the differences and the part each one plays in preserving Warner Bros. film and TV history.
The story originates from how an exhibit at Paris' Pompidou Center led to the birth of the Warner Bros. Corporate Archive and the pivotal role played by Leith Adams. Jeff relates how he was brought onto the team and some of his highlights in working with archival props, costumes, and archival photos. Along the way, we discuss the role of the Academy's new museum, the Jack Warner collection, and the partnership with the USC Film Archive. We also review the evolution of the studio's historic mailroom tour, initiated in the 1940s, and how it has developed into the current studio tour. And George relates some of the recent requests he has received from the press during the 100th Anniversary Celebration.

Warner Archive July Blu-ray Reviews Part 1: "The Broadway Melody," "Cimarron" & "DuBarry Was a Lady"
7/26/2023
George Feltenstein joins the podcast to review three new July Blu-ray releases from the Warner Archive.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer made every effort to impress with its first talking motion picture, setting a new standard for big-budget films and establishing an archetype for decades of movie musicals to follow in "The Broadway Melody." The Great White Way truly becomes the Street of Broken Dreams when sisters Queenie and Hank Mahoney (Anita Page and Bessie Love) follow Hank's boyfriend, Eddie Kearns (Charles King), to Manhattan with visions of stardom. In New York, Eddie and Queenie are attracted to each other, but unwilling to betray her sister, Queenie dates a feckless cad. Now, Hank must sort out the tangle of aspirations and emotions that form this tragic love triangle. Filled with a memorable score of unforgettable songs by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed, this was the first sound film to win the Academy Award® for Best Picture (1929-30).

"CIMARRON" the (1931) Academy Award®-winning adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel traces the lives of two people who are in love with each other--but in love with life even more--as they struggle to bring civilization to the Western frontier in Cimarron! 1898. The Oklahoma Land Rush. As thousands of would-be settlers race across a barren desert to be the first to stake their claim to a plot of land, Yancey Cravat (Richard Dix) is cheated out of his property by Dixie Lee (Estelle Taylor). Without the farm they had hoped to start, Yancey and his wife, Sabra (Irene Dunne), take over the local newspaper after the editor is assassinated. But as the newspaper helps bring order to a lawless land, Yancey feels the wanderlust to find new frontiers and new adventures, and Sabra stays to build a publishing empire. Always in love, frequently apart and destined for greatness, Yancey and Sabra lead lives as tempestuous as the land they have chosen for their home in this epic Western classic.

Warner Archive May 2023 Blu-ray Reviews: "Queen Christina," "King Solomon's Mines," & "The Courtship of Eddie's Father"
6/6/2023
George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast for a fun and informative review of three May Blu-ray releases. We dive into the restoration and all of the extras on each release and share our insights into why these films are worth adding to your Blu-ray collection.
In "Queen Christina" (1933) Greta Garbo stars in one of her greatest roles, as the 17th-century Swedish queen fiercely devoted to her country who fights at the head of her army like a man but who loves like a woman. Directed with his own unique style by Rouben Mamoulian, this M-G-M classic endures as a masterpiece of classic cinema.
Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr star in the adventure story "King Solomon's Mines" (1950), all shot on location in Africa. Granger plays Quatermain in this M-G-M adaptation that was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar® and won the awards for Best Color Cinematography and Best Editing. Deborah Kerr plays the plain Englishwoman who hires Quatermain to lead the hunt for her missing husband, even though no safari has ever returned from uninhabited regions their expeditions must cross.
Child star Ron Howard joins Glenn Ford in the delightful romantic comedy "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" (1963). Shirley Jones, Stella Stevens, and Dina Merrill play the potential new Mrs. Corbett, in this earnest and stylish film directed by the iconic Vincente Minnelli.
