Every Little Voice

The music classroom is a site of power. It's reflected in the privilege of being able to attend, the hierarchies that form amongst learners and teachers, and in the imbalance of cultures represented. Why do we teach what we teach, and who does it serve? Join us as we examine the powers that shape music curricula, and discuss the movement towards music education that better represents diverse realities. The last few years have been a period of unprecedented innovation in the delivery of music education. In this episode, educators Dr. Sarah Bay-Cheng, Dr. Bina John, and CMST Executive Director Richard Marsella reflect upon the lessons learned from organizing arts and music programming during the pandemic.

A co-production between graduate student Danielle Muir and faculty member Evan Desaulnier. A deep dive into Eurocentrism in Canadian music education, and how alternative priorities can nurture musicality among Toronto’s diverse youth. Dr. Bina John is a professor at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music. Dr. John has been an instrumental member of the RPSM Board of Directors since 2013, co-chairing its working group on anti-Black racism and anti-oppression, supporting curriculum development, and much more. This episode highlights Bina's passion for RPSM and community connection through music.
