Herb Alpert

7/2/2024
Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback Podcasts! Greetings to all you time travelers and music aficionados! I'm Jumpin' John, and in this episode of Rock and Roll Flashback podcast I will review the extensive musical career of trumpeter and producer Herb Alpert! Herb Alpert recorded 28 albums that charted on the U.S. Billboard 200. Five of those LP's became #1 albums. His album sales resulted in 14 LP's reaching platinum status and 15 LP's reaching gold status. From the week ending October 16th, 1965, through the week ending April 29th, 1967, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass had at least one album in the Top 10, marking 81 consecutive weeks! For many of these weeks, more than one album registered in the Top 10. In the year 1966 alone, over 13 million Alpert recordings were sold, outselling the Beatles. That same year, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized that Alpert set a new record by placing 5 albums simultaneously in the Top 20 on the Billboard chart, an accomplishment that has never been repeated. Alpert is the only musician to hit #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as both a vocalist (with "This Guy's in Love with You" in 1968) and an instrumentalist (with "Rise" in 1979). Alpert has sold an estimated 72 million records worldwide. In addition to the Grammy Trustees Award, Herb Alpert has won eight Grammy Awards. One Hit Wonders: 3 Songs From 1969

6/20/2024
Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback! I’m Jumpin’ John, and in this podcast episode I will transport you listeners back to the year 1969! The 1969-1970 time period is often referred to as an important transitional period in music that witnessed Album-Oriented Rock formats overshadowing Top 40 singles on the airwaves. Back in 1969 the music buying industry was becoming dominated by purchases of rock albums. The focus of this podcast is not on those popular albums of 1969. Rather, I will briefly discuss three singles that were released in 1969 and are now considered to be classic one hit wonders! Those three songs were “In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)” by Zager and Evans, "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies, and "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum. These three singles each would play significant roles in American music and pop culture. Dusty Springfield

5/21/2024
Greetings, fellow time travelers, and welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback! I'm Jumpin' John, and in this episode I will discuss the career of the woman who, I would argue, was perhaps the finest white soul singer of her era! I'm referring to the great British singing icon, Dusty Springfield! So sit back and have a listen as we flash back in time in this edition of Rock and Roll Flashback! During her 1960's peak, with her trademark peroxide blonde beehive hairdo, heavy makeup and eyeliner, evening gowns, and flamboyant performances, Dusty Springfield was an icon of the Swinging Sixties. From 1963 to 1989 Dusty ranked among the most successful British female performers on both sides of the Atlantic with 6 top 20 singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and 16 top 20 singles on the U.K. Singles Chart. Several international polls have named Dusty Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time.
