A Little Bit About Memphis Soul
4/9/2022
This episode is a throwback. We love listening to different versions of songs. In this episode we share a quick review of Me and Mrs. Jones, the classic hit by Billy Paul, and contrast it with the version by The Dramatics, a Memphis Soul group from Stax. Then, we talk Memphis Soul from the label HI Records that recorded such legends as Al Green. We also had a conversation with our friend Terry Ferguson (Prof. T. Love) from A BOWL OF SOUL -- one of our favorite people -- back in 2020. She and Steve had a great conversation about music -- each one adding their own dimension to the conversation. Just talking music, radio for African American History
2/15/2022
February is African American History Month! In This episode, Steve and I have a visit from Gachele Coffey, a longtime Chicago radio personality that worked with Steve in the 1990s. They worked form the legendary John H. Johnson, the media mogul that created and owned Ebony and Jet magazines -- the first national magazines featuring African Americans. He later spread out into radio and television production creating Johnson media.
Their discussions of African American radio, what it was like to work with Johnson, and their experiences producing radio shows are so appropriate for February, which is African American History month.

Episode 39 --2022 Is Going To Be A Shining Star...We Hope
1/11/2022
In this episode of our podcast we talked with songwriter Mr. Paul Richmond. The Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter/bassist/performer Paul Richmond has performed and/or recorded with R&B singer Tyrone Davis, the groups Champaign, the Impressions, and the Five Stairsteps, and contributed guitar on the Independents' 1973 number one R&B/number 21 pop hit "Leaving Me". He also penned one of The Manhattans’ biggest hits, “Shining Star” that went platinum. It was an impromptu call by Steve, and thank goodness Mr. Richmond was available. We had a great conversation with him. We also saluted The Great Howlin' Wolf. Steve is Wolf’s nephew and has lots of information about him. So enjoy our first podcast of 2022. Episode 36 --They Were Dancing Machines
9/11/2021
We celebrate the first family of music -- The Jacksons. They burst onto the national and international stage in 1969. But before then they were just Juquan and the Torianos (Yes, that's right).
In this episode, we share some deep background about the group's origin, their first performances and their relationship with community. We also bust some myths about them.
If you would like to know more about the Jackson's early days then read the book THE LONG JOURNEY TO GLORY --My side of the Jacksons' Story by Reynaud D. Jones. In this book the record is set straight. As the first "leader" of the group, Jones takes us from beginning to an unfortunate turn in their relationship after they became mega stars and Michael became the King of Pop.

#28 A Salute to the Soul Icons Who Shaped Classic Soul
12/17/2020
While December is a month filled with holiday celebrations, it is also a month that many soul and R&B music enthusiast call "the month that soul music died".
On December 11, 1964 Sam Cooke was killed. Cooke had been the greatest influence on soul music -- some saying he was the architect of the sound. He merged the sound of the African American church with secular lyrics and soul was born. Following his tragic death just three years later almost to the day, was the death of Otis Redding, the star performer of Stax Records. Otis died in a tragic plane crash on December 10, 1967. Not only did Otis perish, but most of the members of the Bar-Kays, the house band of Stax, and performers in their own right. We talk about these performers who left their imprint on classic soul.
But we first talk with Jeff Kollath, executive director of the Stax Museum in Memphis. And of course we talked about other stuff, too.
