Frozen Landscapes

1/24/2026
I haven't had much time or been motivated to create new mixes so far in the new year. But there's nothing like sub-zero temperatures and being cooped up indoors to get one in the mood for a good wintry mix. The temperature as I type this is -15 degrees with a wind chill of -40. 🥶 I've done these frigid temps themed mixes before and I'm always surprised at how well they come together. I start by simply searching for tracks with certain keywords - frozen, cold, frigid, ice, wind, winter, etc. and then try to use mostly tunes from 2025. This mix is a bit different than others because it turns toward warmth in the last few tracks - "Warmer Light," "Threads of Warmth," and "Warmth". I hope that by ending the mix on a warmer note that I may manifest higher temps. Stay warm and cheers! Favorite Instrumental Rock Albums of 2025

1/7/2026
One of my favorite genre rabbit holes that I went down in 2025 was instrumental rock music. That title covers a lot of styles from post-rock to stoner rock to prog rock to cosmic country to fusion to psych rock etc. I've always listened to music that falls into this category whether it's Khruangbin or Causa Sui or Oren Ambarchi but this year my interest in this genre exploded. So I thought I would create a mix of some of my favorite instrumental rock albums from 2025. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the heavy stuff. This mix has a nice blend of a few heavy tunes with some Khruangbin-like tracks, a couple kraut rock style tracks, a jam band cut, a prog tune, even a dub track, and a bunch of other difficult to categorize music. >>>LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX<<< 01 - https://actiontensionspace.bandcamp.com/album/new-dimensions 02 - https://heavypsychsoundsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/yawning-man-pavement-ends 03 - https://ambarchiberthlingwerliin.bandcamp.com/album/ghosted-iii 04 - https://elparaisorecords.com/product/causa-sui-in-flux/ 05 - https://piotrkurek.bandcamp.com/album/songs-and-bodies 06 - https://elparaisorecords.com/product/edena-gardens-dispossessed/ 07- https://barrywalker.bandcamp.com/album/barry-walker-unit-at-the-13th-moon-gravity-well 08 - https://jeffthebrotherhood.bandcamp.com/album/magick-songs 09 - https://kungensman.bandcamp.com/album/resande-i-rockmusik 10 - https://markusreuter.bandcamp.com/album/truce-3 11 - https://re-stoned.bandcamp.com/album/the-loom-maxi-single 12 - https://townportal.bandcamp.com/album/grindwork 13 - https://holmisanisland.bandcamp.com/album/behind-curtains 14 - https://yuuf.bandcamp.com/album/alma-s-cove 15 - https://eliwinter.bandcamp.com/album/a-trick-of-the-light I know this isn't the usual LLM ambient fare but it is still somehow trance inducing. Berlin School EM 2025 End Of Year XL Update by Erwin Broers

12/31/2025
Oh man, what a way to end the year! Erwin has been curating excellent Berlin-school mixes for us all year and now he finishes it off with this massive end-of-the-year update. I've been in this headspace for a while now so this perfectly satisfies my craving. Thanks to Erwin for a great year of electronic mixes. Here what he has to say about this year-ender: "Another smorgasbord of what the electronic music scene has to offer these days and another invitation for space travelling! It's an extra long mix given my incapacity to choose from the wide offer of sublime tracks and albums that were released in 2025. The diversity in styles within this music category is remarkable; synth pop, retro, contemporary and progressive Berlin School, cosmic sound tapestries, contemplative/meditative/emotional (drone) ambient and a lengthy deep house track. Special mention for two female electronic music artists Andrea Cichecki and Lisa Bella Donna. Unfortunately, women are rare in this line of music, but these ladies more than deserve their place in this mix with thrilling evocative compositions. Check it out & enjoy your trip!" Favorite Ambient Albums of 2025 Part 1

12/26/2025
When end-of-the-year list season began I wasn't sure if I was going to do a favorite ambient albums list. I wasn't as locked into ambient as much this year as in the past. I spent most of my listening time in indie, jazz, and berlin-school. I had several ambient albums that would for sure make my list so I started with those and the next thing I knew - I had a list of 26 albums that are my 2025 favorites. Here are my favorite ambient albums of 2025, in alphabetical order: I made two mixes so it will be a little easier to digest. This post is for part one. I hope you enjoy this look back at 2025. First Snow

12/18/2025
This is a mix I originally created back in December of 2006, during my first year of posting mixes online. This one never made its way to Mixcloud so I figured, with all the cold and snow I'm getting in my neck of the woods, now would be a good time to resurrect this set. The original post here on the blog has a bad link to the mp3 so I wanted to post it her as well. It's interesting to see the artists that I was listening to at the time. Such as Freescha, Svalastog, Yellow 6, Klimek, and the track by Clint Mansell from the soundtrack to The Fountain, which I was absolutely obsessed with for a few years. Every tune has one of these words...snow, winter, cold, frozen, ice, or freezing, in the title. Btw, the pic is my mom, taken in the mid 1970s. :-) Cheers! Dreaming In Gamelan by Andy McNeill

12/11/2025
I have a special treat for everyone with this new mix. It's a guest mix from friend of Low Light Mixes, Andy McNeill. Andy records as Maple Mountain Sunburst and has created two previous mixes for LLM and they are both excellent. You can find them here: http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2024/10/a-moon-full-of-stars-and-astral-cars-by.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2025/01/we-did-it-again-by-andy-mcneillmaple.html Andy has a new album out, under his own name, that is a little different from his other recordings. That new album is the inspiration for this new mix which is really something special. I'll let Andy tell you about it: "Mallets, gongs, tintinnabulations, things that go ping. Here we have a mix of percolating exotica to float away on for an hour. I’ve included three tracks from a recent collaboration with percussionist and fellow composer Bill Brennan. Our album Dreaming In Gamelan blends West Javanese gamelan traditions with contemporary ambient electronics. Recorded with traditional hand-forged bronze instruments, the tracks were then augmented and treated in the studio. Also joining us was the brilliant electric violinist and sonic explorer Hugh Marsh. The album was mixed for immersive Dolby Atmos by Ron Searles (Atmos version available on Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon)." https://lnk.to/dreamingingamelan https://brennanmcneill.bandcamp.com/album/dreaming-in-gamelan Thanks to Andy for curating and mixing this great collection tracks. Mentalized - The Music of Wolfram Spyra by Erwin Broers

12/3/2025
Between Erwin Broers & Paul Asbury Seaman I have been exposed to a ton of excellent berlin-school music over the last couple years. Erwin continues his great string of mixes with this new one featuring the music of Wolfram Spyra. I was totally unfamiliar with this music before hearing this mix and now I'm thankful for the introduction. Here's what Erwin says about this mix: "In the mid-1990s, when interest for 'Kosmische Musik' (German)/'Cosmic Music' (English) regained, some Electronic Music artists chose to dig deeper into that first highly creative era, hence starting the 'Retro Berlin School' subgenre. Other artists merely borrowed certain elements (multi-facetted sequencing, layered soundscapes, space fx, Mellotron choirs,...) and then added their own spices to the sauce. One of the artists that managed to create his own style of contemporary "Berlin School Electronic Music" is the German Fine Arts student (then), and musician, inventor and sound designer (now, dixit his own website) Wolfram Spyra (Kassel, 1964), aka "Der Spyra" or simply "Spyra". His style is somewhere between floating, rhythmic, meditative, downtempo and groovy, yes almost danceable. A very interesting blend of old skool and modern electronic ingredients! This mix is a chronological overview of 20 years of releases from 1997 till 2018." This is a perfect mix for floating in a floatation tank, drifting off to sleep, or viewing the northern lights(which we've had several nights of this year). Evocation - A Rhythmic Ambient Headspace

11/12/2025
My love for tribal ambient music, of course, starts with Steve Roach. Going back to Dreamtime Return, Desert Solitaire, Western Spaces, Origins, Strata, On This Planet, and The Dream Circle, just to name a few. I go through phases where I may tire of the style but I always come back to it, usually when a new record reminds me of how much I love the genre. In this case that new album is "A Path Within A Path" by Seabuckthorn. I always enjoy Seabuckthorn music so I dove into the new album and discovered a few tracks with an excellent, organic percussion sound that I love. The entire album is great. Once I latched onto those rhythmic tracks I knew I had to compile a few more for a new tribal ambient mix. Surprisingly there are no Steve Roach tracks in the mix. Although there's a great track from one of his frequent collaborators, Byron Metcalf, from his lates album - Spiral Exchange. I've created several tribal mixes over the years and I hope you enjoy this and the others as much as I do. The Next Train by Paul Asbury Seaman

11/5/2025
The guest mix hit parade continues! Right on the heels of his last train mix Paul gives another train-themed set. This is one more in line with many of Paul's other train mixes in that it's main genre is berlin-school. I have been on a berlin-school bender all year so I am excited for this one. Here's what Paul says about the mix: "You’re sitting on a grassy slope above the cottage, looking out across the landscape below. It’s night and soft dots of light here and there indicate other houses, groups of houses, a road. In the distance you can see the black edge of a ruler, marking the gap between carriages and a bright bar of light moving left in front of it. Like happens in dreams, you are watching the scene and then you are in it, your seat tipped back, not quite asleep, you’re looking out the window. It’s a modern train. Gone is the classic click-click, click-click, but you can still feel the subtle rocking back and forth as the train hurtles silently forward. Under the stars. The cacophony of a station stop, made eerie in the wee hours of the morning. Or memory stirring up a previous adventure then returning you to your current tranquility." Thanks, Paul, for another excellent entry in your continuing train series. Late Night with Yorgos Dousos

10/30/2025
Yorgos Dousos is a multi-instrumentalist and composer located in Athens. He plays flute and clarinet to combine Greek music tradition, European jazz, and ambient electronic into an inspired musical experience. I got to hear an advance copy of his latest album - LUPUS, Love Under Pain, Upon Suffering - I knew immediately that I had to reach out to Yorgos about a guest mix. And here it is! Here's what Yorgos has to say about this set: “Late Night” is a small map of where my head has been living while finishing my new record. It’s the hour when things get quieter, when the room feels bigger than it is and every sound has more weight. I wanted this mix to sit in that space where breath, memory, and repetition start to blur. It opens with my own pieces (“Marisha” and “Breath” from "LUPUS, Love Under Pain, Upon Suffering") because that’s the emotional ground I’m working from lately. All of the tracks orbit the same questions I’m dealing with on the album: what it means for sound to feel physical and intimate but also distant and ghosted; how much you can say emotionally with or without melody; and where the human breath sits inside electronics and processing. Thanks, Yorgos, for this excellent mix! Amiably Ambient by Daniel Hawkins

10/15/2025
We've had a nice run of guest mixes lately here at Low Light Mixes world headquarters. And that streak continues will a wonderful new set from Daniel Hawkins. Here his two previous guest mixes: https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/dark-woods-by-daniel-hawkins/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/metallic-memories/ This mix has a perfect fall vibe. Here's what Daniel says about this collection of tracks: "As I was saving some of the songs that I liked over the past few weeks, I noticed a bunch of them were guitar pieces - so I figured that was as good a reason as any to do a themed mix. For me the hardest part of doing the mixes is I end up with a lot of good music and have to make tough choices about what to cut from the final mix. There are just so many great musicians out there now doing superb work. So I just go slow and make changes - I think this is a cohesive mix with a nice flow - you be the judge." Berlin School EM Autumn 2025 by Erwin Broers

10/8/2025
The king of Berlin School EM music, Erwin Broers, is back with a fantastic update to his regular series. This fall update just may the best yet. I listened to this while biking home from work, unsure whether it would fit the activity. Oh man, it was perfect! It kept me pedaling and focused while exposing me to fresh electronic sounds. Here's what Erwin has to say about this set: "Another look at what's been happening on the Electronic/Berlin School/Synth Music spectrum over the last months. As might be expected, a variety of styles and vibes, so listen to the whole mix and I guarantee you'll find at least a few tracks to your liking. All music is from 2025 and from a wide variety of countries including Germany, England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, the USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Poland and even Argentina! The Lonely Bell's Autumnal Ether Mix

10/1/2025
I always like to create a mix for autumn but this year I got bust and never got around to it. Thankfully The Lonely Bell has that covered. The Lonely Bell is Ali Murray who hails from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. He has been producing for ten years and I have been a fan since 2022's "Kingdom of the Deep." The Lonely Bell has a new album out so to celebrate we have this new mix. Here what Ali says about this mix: "As the seasons begin to change, and late summer gradually fades into the dark, cold, wet, blustery days of early autumn here on the Isle of Lewis (Scotland) - I wanted to create a guest mix of ambient tracks that aurally reflect the quiet sadness and barren beauty that fills the air (and the heart) at this time of year. These tracks have been soundtracking my days during this seasonal shift, and I find that each individual track is dense with this strange and mysterious form of autumnal melancholy that is simultaneously haunting and comforting.... The mix also coincides with the release of my latest album 'Time Beyond The Edges' - an album of collaboration pieces with fellow ambient artists and experimental composers from around the globe, which came out on Shady Ridge Records on Sept 26th. The mix is bookended by two of the tracks from this release..." Some Good Train Songs by Paul Asbury Seaman

9/24/2025
More than 8 years ago, Paul Asbury Seaman came to me with an idea for a mix. He would provide the theme and tracklist, and I would man the faders and knobs to create his first guest mix. Of course that first mix was a train-themed set. Now, after 9 railway mixes & many hours traveling on the audio tracks, Paul brings us his tenth train-themed mix. This one is a b it different than the others so I'll let Paul tell you about it: "To celebrate my tenth train mix for Low Light Mixes I’m doing a collection of vocal tracks. There are way too many great train songs to call this set a “Best Of,” thus the qualified title. (I have five CD-length train song mixes for my own use.) These are some of my favorites. And here’s several more to start your own playlists, that didn’t make the cut only because of time limitations: “People Get Ready” (several good versions), “City of New Orleans” (Arlo Guthrie), “Locomotive Breath” (Jethro Tull), “Long Train Runnin’” (Doobie Brothers), “The Midnight Special” (CCR), “Downtown Lights” (Annie Lennox version) and of course “Hear My Train a Comin’” by Jimi Hendrix (from the Winterland LIVE box set)." Thanks, Paul, for another thoughtful collection of songs. Here's to 10 more excursions on the rails. in slow time

9/18/2025
This mix is pretty straightforward - all ambient, all new. It can be hard to keep up with new releases so I decided to put together a nice collection of new 2025 tracks. Turned out pretty darn good if I do say so. Cheers! T R A C K L I S T :

FIFTH SECTOR - Blade Runner Ambiance 2025

9/3/2025
I really didn't intend to follow an 80s themed mix with another mix with an 80s vibe. But I couldn't help myself because of the brand new album from Crows Labyrinth - Neon Scenes II: Echoes of Then https://crowslabyrinth.bandcamp.com/album/neon-scenes-ii-echoes-of-then The album is a follow-up to an album called "Neon Scenes I: Granular Dreams." Both albums are longform generative drone ambient pieces that have this great Blade Runner vibe. I used the first album as the jumping off point for my last Blade Runner themed mix in March 2023 - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/replicant-memories/ Upon hearing this new Crows Labyrinth album I just knew I had to create some more Blade Runner ambiance. You're In An 80s Film Driving At Night

8/20/2025
This mix started via a Spotify playlist with the same name - "You're in an 80s Film Driving at Night." I really liked the synth vibes so I created my own folder at home and began collecting tracks. The mix has a great retro vibe even though many of the tracks are from the last 10 years. But, of course, I had to include some cuts from the time period with songs from Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter & Vangelis. Hop in your Delorean and head back to the 1980s for some retro electronic goodness. Cheers! T R A C K L I S T :

Soundtrack for Perseid Meteor Shower 2025

8/12/2025
The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight and tomorrow night, August 12th & 13th. I like to use the Perseids as an excuse to create a spacey, ambient mix for stargazing. So here it is. The first track I grabbed for this mix was Jeff Pearce - For The Perseids, from the Gemstones IV compilation. How could I not use that cut in a mix like this. So I decided to look for other tracks with names that would fit and it was fairly easy to find a bunch that worked. Again, how could I resist tunes called "Luminous Dust Trails" and "Night Drifters" and "Comet Tails." Get outside and scan the skies.
