Imbalanced History: 1967 & The Summer Of Love

5/29/2023
Oh the times they were a-changin' alright by 1967! Something was in the air in the United States, and globally. In the U.S., it was a social/political/cultural shift, embraced mostly by young people at first. Social change was being fueled by racial tensions, and a break with the past by a new generation, who in many cases shared the politics and struggle of civil rights, as well as opposition to the Vietnam War. The epicenter of The Summer Of Love was San Francisco, but there were other cities that shared the lifestyle and music of the hippies of The Haight. Also important is that the events of '67 fell in behind trends and shifts in thinking that started in 1965 or '66. Markus and Ray go through that tumultuous and wonderful year, then dig deeper into the music that made it great!!! Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rival Sons Scott Holiday Interview & Darkfighter Preview

5/27/2023
When we heard an advance copy of Rival Sons new album Darkfighter, we were instant fans of the band and desperately wanted to speak to someone about this rocking new record. We were happily obliged by Founder/Guitarist/Songwriter Scott Holiday - Mr. Fuzzlord himself!! Scott joined us from the road in the US ahead of a schedule that will take Rival Sons to Europe, onto some huge festival stages and back to the US in the fall. Scott was generous with his time and spirit, talking about his influences, the equipment he uses to get that fuzzy sound, writing this album (and it's companion follow-up record LIghtbringer, listen to learn when we'll hear that) and opening for some of the biggest bands in the world like Black Sabbath, KISS, Aerosmith & more. For you classic rock fans who don't know any bands if they didn't record before 1995, I guarantee you'll love this record. It's like they took everything from the 70s & 80s that we love, blended it together to make something new and it kicks @ss! Scott, who like us is a member of the MTV generation, even talked in-depth about the fun videos they made for their first three singles Nobody Wants To Die, Rapture & Bird In The Hand which portray the boys as a band of outlaws in Tarantino fashion. Every listen of this record unlocks something we didn't notice before and endears us to these guys style. Rock isn't dead as long as bands like Rival Sons are still out there making killer new music and playing it live. Listen to our fun conversation with Scott which could have gone on for hours and order Darkfighter, you won't be disappointed: https://rivalsons.lnk.to/darkfighter Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Ugly American Werewolf in London Store - Get your Wolf merch! Shout It Out Loudcast: Episode 223 "An Evening With Gene Simmons"

5/27/2023
This week Tom & Zeus share their incredible experience at the Gene Simmons event, "An Evening With Gene Simmons." Tom & Zeus went on the once in a lifetime experience, "An Evening With Gene Simmons." This was a weekend in Las Vegas where our favorite KISS podcast hosts spent mingling with Gene Simmons and so many more from KISS World. The event was booked as a two day affair. Day one you get to hear Gene Simmons perform songs with his band and also do a meet and greet with Gene Simmons and see his personal collection of KISS items and more. Day two you get to have a steak dinner with Gene and friends and talk to him about whatever you want to discuss. The guys breakdown their Vegas adventure, from the horrible flight to Vegas to the last night of debauchery. Along the way hear about the event, the music and of course meeting and talking with Gene Simmons. Along the way the guys spent time and partied with: Eddie Trunk, Brent Woods, Brent Fitz, Bruce Kulick, Lisa Kulick, Tommy Thayer, Eric Singer, Todd Kerns, PJ Farley, Jake E. Lee and of course a special late night appearance by SIOL HOF, Chris Jericho! Hear all about this insane trip and laugh along when the guys discuss, ill fitted clothing, Chinatown adventures and of course, liquid ass spray (again). Rock is Lit: Brett Marie (AKA Musician Mat Treiber) Talks About His Novel 'The Upsetter Blog', Working With His Wife Roxanne Fontana, & How Anton Newcombe Inspired His Main Character

5/26/2023
In this episode, Brett Marie joins me to talk about his fabulous debut novel, ‘The Upsetter Blog’. Author John Lingan said of the novel, “ ‘The Upsetter Blog’ takes us back to the turn of the century, when the Internet was still a wilderness and ‘new media’ had not yet upended cultural coverage. [Brett Marie’s] finely drawn characters look to rock and roll for redemption, fame, love, and intimacy, caught between old ideas of stardom and new possibilities of communication. A roaring road-novel debut.” The literary alter ego of rock 'n' roll musician Mat Treiber, Brett Marie is a contributing editor for the online literary journal ‘Bookanista’, and a staff writer for the website ‘PopMatters’. His short fiction has appeared in various magazines, including ‘New Plains Review’, ‘Words + Images Press’, and ‘The Impressment Gang’. His story “If It Had Happened to You” was shortlisted for LoveReading UK’s first Very Short Story Award in 2019. He currently lives in England with his wife, singer-songwriter musician and writer Roxanne Fontana, and their daughter, Miss Marie. Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast: Debora Iyall from Romeo Void (Top 5 'Girl' Songs)

5/26/2023
Girl. This simple four letter word has been the impetus behind many of the greatest songs of all time, and the O3L era was no exception. Whether it's a male sung ode to love, longing, success and frustration with the opposite sex, or a female sung declaration of solidarity and empowerment, this week we celebrate songs with the word "girl" in the title (well, most of them). One of those wonderful songs is the 1984 Top 40 smash by Romeo Void, "A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing)." So what an incredible thrill it is for us to welcome as our special guest...DEBORA IYALL from ROMEO VOID! Romeo Void was formed in 1979. Drawing inspiration from the local underground music scene, the band’s founding members were San Francisco Art Institute students Debora Iyall (lead vocalist, lyricist) and Frank Zincavage (bass guitar), alongside local musicians Peter Woods (guitar) and Jay Derrah (drums). They soon added saxophonist Benjamin Bossi. According to Iyall, the name Romeo Void referred to “a lack of romance.” Romeo Void's first official live album, Live From Mabuhay Gardens: November 14, 1980, was recently released on special galaxy blue vinyl for Record Store Day, as well as on CD and digital, by the Liberation Hall label. Recorded at the famed San Francisco punk club by deejay Terry Hammer, the album was captured during the same period that Romeo Void was recording its critically acclaimed debut album for 415 Records, It’s a Condition. Derrah was still drumming with the band at this live show, but was replaced by John “Stench” Haines by the time the sessions for It’s a Condition were underway. Eight of the eleven songs on Live from Mabuhay Gardens: November 14, 1980, would eventually appear on It’s a Condition. The opening track, “Guards,” would surface in 1981 as the B-side of the band’s national breakout single, “Never Say Never.” “Fine Line” is an original that has never been released in any format. The album’s closing number, “Double Shot of My Baby’s Love,” is a cover of the Swingin’ Medallions’ 1966 hit, which was the first 45 single which Iyall owned. Learn more about your ad choices. AllMusicPodcasts: "FANNY: The Right To Rock" with Bobbi Jo Hart

5/25/2023
Fanny might be one of the most influential bands ever that many people have never heard of. David Bowie called them “one of the most important female bands in American rock,” adding they had been buried without a trace. So who was Fanny? Bobbi Jo Hart’s documentary Fanny: The Right To Rock examines the first all-female rock band to release an album on a major label. Formed by two Filipina sisters, the Millington’s experienced racism and sexism at an early age, and found a band to be their doorway out. On five albums released by Reprise Records between 1970 and 1974, they rocked as hard as any of their male rock and roll peers. Their story, and Hart’s documentary on Fanny is a truly inspirational and overdue celebration of this hugely influential band. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
