Shout It Out Loudcast: Episode 224 "The Lick It Up Tour"

6/3/2023
This week Tom & Zeus review the 1983-1984 "Lick It Up Tour" from KISS. This is SIOL's 6th KISS tour reviewed. This tour was a for the new album, "Lick It Up", which was the first KISS album without makeup. The album also was the one and only album where guitarist Vinnie Vincent is listed as an actual band member. The tour began in Europe and continued in United States and Canada. Despite the new look and a killer album, ticket sales were at the lowest point since KISS' inception, averaging slightly more than 5,000 a night. As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous 5 tours reviewed so far. So tune in and make sure you all say hello and goodbye to Vinnie…twice! Grand opening, Grand closing! Rock is Lit: John Wray On His Metal-Centric Novel ‘Gone to the Wolves’, & Jon Verno From Metal Mayhem ROC & Tom Gigliotti From Shout It Out Loudcast Give a Crash-Course on Metal Subgenres

6/2/2023
Calling all metalheads out there in podcast land. Have I got the novel and episode for you. John Wray is here to talk about his brand-new novel, ‘Gone to the Wolves’, which author Raven Leilani describes as “a love letter to metal that captures both its brutal kinetics and its nearness to the sublime.” The novel follows Kip, Kira, and Leslie Z, three teenagers living on Florida’s Gulf Coast in the late 1980s. All three come from unhappy homes, of one sort or another, but forge a friendship centered around their love for metal. If you’ve been waiting for a novel to come along that treats metal with respect rather than parody, your wait it over. But even if you didn’t grow up watching ‘Head Bangers Ball’ or hoarding Metallica or Slayer records, there’s something in this novel for everyone. In the last segment, Jon Verno, from the Metal Mayhem ROC podcast, and Tom Gigliotti, co-host of Shout It Out Loudcast, school me on several subgenres of metal mentioned in ‘Gone to the Wolves’, including death, thrash, black, and glam metal. Only Three Lads: Tony Valentino of The Standells (Top 5 Garage Rock Songs)

6/2/2023
We're heading straight to the garage this week! Following the release of Lenny Kaye's seminal Nuggets compilation of '60s garage bands in 1972, legions of young musicians eschewed the increasingly complex, bloated , pretentious rock of the day to return to simpler, rawer, more primal sounds. These embryonic punk rock records not only inspired bands like Ramones, Blondie, The Clash and The Sex Pistols, but launched a full scale garage rock revival scene in the '80s that reverberated into the 21st century with bands like The White Stripes, The Black Keys and The Strokes. We are honored to have one of the key architects of '60s garage/punk rock joining us as our Third Lad this week, Tony Valentino of The Standells! He was the man who wrote and played one of THE most recognizable and distinctive riffs in all of rock n' roll, "Dirty Water," as well as Standells classics such as "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," "Why Pick On Me," "Barracuda," "Riot On Sunset Strip," and "Try It." Rock n' roll brought a young Valentino from his native Italy to the land of milk and honey (and root beer), the USA. Hear about his incredible journey that led to appearances in TV shows and movies such as The Munsters, The Bing Crosby Show, American Bandstand, Ben Casey, Get Yourself A College Girl, and Riot on Sunset Strip, a wild tour with The Rolling Stones, shady managers, Laurel Canyon dalliances with The Beach Boys and the Manson Family, and how Rick Springfield provided the inspiration behind his latest album, Dirty Water Revisited. Dirty Water Revisited is out now on the marvelous Big Stir Records, and features ten newly recorded tracks from the guitar hero, reimagining many of the classics that made The Standells the ultimate purveyors of gritty riffs and swaggering hits in the '60s, and adds a pair of blistering originals to the mix. Far from a nostalgia trip, Dirty Water Revisited is proof positive that rock n' roll is alive and well in the hands of a true legend. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What Difference Does It Make: Richard Blade

6/2/2023
Congratulations are in order for Richard Blade. Los Angeles Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez will introduce a resolution declaring June 9, 2023, “RICHARD BLADE DAY," with the award presented on JUNE 6th for the best-selling author, world-renowned on-air personality and radio show host. It turns out Richard Blade may just be an "Imposter". Los Angelenos know him as the voice that introduced a generation to 80s music bands like Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, INXS, and The Cure. In fact, you can still hear him seven days a week on SiriusXM's 1st Wave channel. However, the truth is that Richard Blade is ALSO a writer...and a good one at that. His latest book is Imposters, based on the true story of Mike Evans and John "JT" Thomas". Mike was one half of the morning show at KROQ in the early 80s. It was Mike that sat Richard down and told him this incredible story that Richard felt compelled to share with the world. It was a real treat to have Richard enter our virtual studios and we discovered so much more than we expected of his own unique story. As Richard might say, "It's gonna be great!" Homegrown in San Antonio, the Butthole Surfers broke social norms and broke the mold along the way. In this continuation of our '90s miniseries, hear their storied history (including how frontman Gibby Haynes incorporated his pet roach into shows), how "Pepper" came about, and how the now-classic music video came to star CHiPs star Erik Estrada. Hear us talk about seeing the band live, Gibby Haynes' unmatched showmanship, and how they still manage to captivate audiences. In this ep, we also chat about '90s bands playing at San Antonio's famed oyster bake, including Everclear, P.O.D., Enjoying the podcast? Whatever, Nevermind Bonus: The Alice In Chains EP's

5/30/2023
David Hudson joins Bakko as they break down the 2 EP's from Alice In Chains, Sap & Jar Of Flies. Sap is the second studio EP by the American rock band Alice in Chains, released on February 4, 1992, through Columbia Records. Sap is mostly acoustic and marks the first time that guitarist Jerry Cantrell sings lead vocals in an Alice in Chains release, with the song "Brother". The EP was produced by Alice in Chains and Rick Parashar and features guest vocals by Ann Wilson of the band Heart, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Mark Arm of Mudhoney. The track "Got Me Wrong" became a hit two years later after being featured on the soundtrack to the 1994 film Clerks. On January 14, 1994, Sap was certified gold by the RIAA for the sale of more than 500,000 copies. Jar of Flies is the third studio EP by the American rock band Alice in Chains, released on January 25, 1994, through Columbia Records. This is Alice in Chains' second acoustic EP, preceded by 1992's Sap, and it is the first EP in music history to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with the first week sales exceeding 141,000 copies in the United States. The self-produced EP was written and recorded over the course of just one week at the London Bridge Studio in Seattle. The tracks "No Excuses", "I Stay Away" and "Don't Follow" were released as singles to promote the album. Jar of Flies was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1995: Best Recording Package and Best Hard Rock Performance for "I Stay Away". David Hudson is the co-host of the State of Amorica Podcast. Imbalanced History: 1967 & The Summer Of Love

5/29/2023
Oh the times they were a-changin' alright by 1967! Something was in the air in the United States, and globally. In the U.S., it was a social/political/cultural shift, embraced mostly by young people at first. Social change was being fueled by racial tensions, and a break with the past by a new generation, who in many cases shared the politics and struggle of civil rights, as well as opposition to the Vietnam War. The epicenter of The Summer Of Love was San Francisco, but there were other cities that shared the lifestyle and music of the hippies of The Haight. Also important is that the events of '67 fell in behind trends and shifts in thinking that started in 1965 or '66. Markus and Ray go through that tumultuous and wonderful year, then dig deeper into the music that made it great!!! Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rival Sons Scott Holiday Interview & Darkfighter Preview

5/27/2023
When we heard an advance copy of Rival Sons new album Darkfighter, we were instant fans of the band and desperately wanted to speak to someone about this rocking new record. We were happily obliged by Founder/Guitarist/Songwriter Scott Holiday - Mr. Fuzzlord himself!! Scott joined us from the road in the US ahead of a schedule that will take Rival Sons to Europe, onto some huge festival stages and back to the US in the fall. Scott was generous with his time and spirit, talking about his influences, the equipment he uses to get that fuzzy sound, writing this album (and it's companion follow-up record LIghtbringer, listen to learn when we'll hear that) and opening for some of the biggest bands in the world like Black Sabbath, KISS, Aerosmith & more. For you classic rock fans who don't know any bands if they didn't record before 1995, I guarantee you'll love this record. It's like they took everything from the 70s & 80s that we love, blended it together to make something new and it kicks @ss! Scott, who like us is a member of the MTV generation, even talked in-depth about the fun videos they made for their first three singles Nobody Wants To Die, Rapture & Bird In The Hand which portray the boys as a band of outlaws in Tarantino fashion. Every listen of this record unlocks something we didn't notice before and endears us to these guys style. Rock isn't dead as long as bands like Rival Sons are still out there making killer new music and playing it live.
