Rock is Lit: Bonus EP: Scott Michaels Talks About Sharon Tate & the Manson Murders & Working With Quentin Tarantino on 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

6/7/2023
In this bonus episode (which is really an addendum to Season 1 Episode 6, featuring Zachary Lazar’s rock novel ‘Sway’, a story that brings together the early Rolling Stones, the films of avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger, and members of the Manson Family in a fictional setting) Scott Michaels joins me to talk about Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders and what it was like working with Quentin Tarantino on his film ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’. Scott Michaels is Hollywood’s original authority on celebrity deaths, including the Manson Murders, and a former tour guide for LA’s now-defunct Dearly Departed Tours. Quentin Tarantino hired Scott to be a consultant on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, which reimagines the murders of Sharon Tate, Voytek Frykowski, Jay Sebring, and Abigail Folger at the hands of the Manson Family in early August 1969. This past April, Scott gave me a once-in-a-lifetime, one-on-one, all-day tour of major Manson Family points of interest in Los Angeles and the surrounding area, which we talk about in this bonus episode. We also talk about common misconceptions about the murders, Scott’s experience working with Quentin Tarantino on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, Scott’s favorite nonfiction books about the murders, people related to the case he’s known, and little-known tidbits about the murders, like what book Abigail Folger was reading when she was killed. So, cue up The Beatles’ ‘White Album’, slip into your favorite retro threads, kick back and join Scott Michaels and me as we time travel back to 1969 Southern California to revisit the true crime that brought an end to the free lovin’ groovy ‘60s. Afterward, I invite you to check out Season 1 Episode 6 to hear my conversation with Zachary Lazar about his novel ‘Sway’ and Tony Sokol’s thoughts on the Stones and the occult and Zeena Schreck’s memories of her godfather Kenneth Anger. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew Episode 41 "BulletBoys"

6/7/2023
On the 41st Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1988 self titled debut album, "BulletBoys" BulletBoys were led by trio of ex-King Kobra members, guitarist Mick Sweda, bassist Lonnie Vencent and lead singer, Marq Torien. The band added drummer Jimmy D'Anda. The band drew a lot comparison to Van Halen, due to them signing with Warner Brothers, their first album being produced by legendary Van Halen producer, Ted Templeman and the lead singer Marq Torien's style which resembled David Lee Roth. The Van Halen influence along with ACDC was evident as well in the music. The debut album led by singles, Smooth Up In Ya and For The Love Of Money, which were heavily played on MTV pushed the album to gold status. Torien's unique look and style and his amazing voice also brought attention to the band. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 39 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Sonny's pick as if anyone couldn't tell So give us a taste kissin' kitty or its one, two F You! Rock is Lit: Bonus EP: Zeena Schreck on the Power of Medicine Buddha Mantra for Spiritual & Physical Healing

6/6/2023
This offering is an outtake from Episode 22, on Rob Errera’s horror rock novel ‘Hangman’s Jam’, a story about a haunted song that beguiles an up-and-coming rock band. In the last segment of that episode, my friend Zeena Schreck joined me to talk about the power certain songs have in spiritual and magical practices, to add real-world context to Rob’s novel. Zeena has been on the podcast a few times, and each time our conversation tends to branch out and take on a life of its own, which means I always have some bits that don’t make it into the regular episodes, many of which wind up as stand-alone mini-episodes, like this one. For those of you who are not familiar with Zeena and her work, here’s a short introduction: Zeena Schreck, formerly LaVey, was raised within the Church of Satan. She came to international prominence early in life as the organization's High Priestess and first public spokesperson, defending the Church in the 1980s during the infamous media-fueled U.S. Satanic Panic. She resigned her position in 1990, severed ties with her father, Anton LaVey, and renounced Satanism and Western occultism to pursue her own religious path, which led to her becoming a practitioner and lineage holder of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism. Zeena is also an interdisciplinary visual and musical artist based in Berlin, Germany. Her latest solo album, ‘Transcend’, was just released and is available on Bandcamp. You can find the link below. So much of Zeena’s art converges with her spiritual practice. This is definitely true of ‘Transcend’. To celebrate the release of this amazing album, have a listen to this outtake from my interview with her from Episode 22, in which we talk about the use and power of Medicine Buddha mantra for spiritual and physical healing, energy transference and mantras as a means for energy transference, approaching Medicine Buddha in the spirit of receptivity and experimentation, the importance of having compassion—even for negative forces—and more. You’ll also hear clips from two tracks from ‘Transcend’: “Ascent” and “Parting Clouds.” Music used in this interview is by Zeena Schreck and used with her approval and cannot be reproduced without her permission: “Ascent” “Parting Clouds” Links: Zeena’s new album ‘Transcend’ on Bandcamp: https://zeenaschreck.bandcamp.com/album/transcend For news of Zeena's current public activities and releases, subscribe to the e-newsletter at https://www.zeenaschreck.com/subscribe.html Zeena’s website: www.ZeenaSchreck.com Zeena’s blog: https://www.zeenaschreck.com/blog Zeena, Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zeenaschreck_art/ Zeena, YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/ZeenaSchreckOfficial Zeena, Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZEENA.Official.ZeenaSchreck Episode 22 of Rock is Lit: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/rockislitpodcast/roberreraandzeenaschreck Episode 6 of Rock is Lit: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/rockislitpodcast/zacharylazar/tonysokol/zeenaschreck Rock is Lit Bonus: Zeena on Her Spiritual Path: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/podcast-vault-feed/zeenaschreckandspirituality Rock is Lit Bonus: Zeena on Her Godfather Kenneth Anger: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/podcast-vault-feed/zeenaschreck Leave a rating and comment on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-is-lit/id1642987350 Leave a rating and comment on Goodpods: https://goodpods.com/podcasts/rock-is-lit-212451 Christy Alexander Hallberg’s website: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/ Christy Alexander Hallberg on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube: @ChristyHallberg Learn more about your ad choices. What's HOT in the Strip Clubs - Behind The Curtain with Chris Allen

6/5/2023
Introducing Phoenix, AZ DJ Chris "Big Nasty" Allen! Today's interview brings us a cautionary and inspirational story about overcoming major ongoing medical issues! Chris tells us about how he broke several vertebrae in his neck, was temporarily a quadriplegic, and the many setbacks in his ongoing recovery process from spinal reconstruction surgery (Vertebraes, C3-C7), all through the COVID Pandemic till this very day! We also discuss how being a musician often leads to becoming a strip club DJ! And how being a one-man band singing and playing "porno blues" (a genre Chris created) led to an offer to DJ at his first strip club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. How did preaching influence Chris's style on the mic? His first club had a Juke Box for music selections and he learned how to Emcee by listening to the owner, Al (a former Pentecostal minister) 'preach' to the crowd. "The Sunday congregation at the first church of what's shakin' now!" The Naked Sermon! Can I get an AMEN?! Lol From there he DJ'd off of a 5-disc changer/CD player with a cassette deck attached to it (Google it youngsters! LOL), to professional CD players, to today's DJ programs while working in San Francisco, and ultimately settling in the Valley of the Sun, Phoenix, AZ! He overcame a meth addiction 17 years ago too! Special shout out to the P.A.N.D.A.s who have helped him with his addiction (Daniel Montoya), and mentored him on the craft of being a Strip Club DJ! Chris then reveals how he broke his neck and wrist (and all these years we've been told that masturbation makes you go blind!), and the many complications in his recovery due to poor treatment by medical personnel, health insurance intricacies, and just the sheer physical pain involved with such catastrophic injuries. "Big Nasty" shares invaluable information with all of us on how to be your own ADVOCATE while dealing with insurance and treatment centers. He gives us 2 KEY terminologies that will empower anyone going through similar major long-term medical recovery! KNOW your insurance coverage!!! KNOW who your 'charge nurse" is! Chris has had to relearn how to walk, use his hands, and really, every basic function we do on a day-to-day basis that we all take for granted! From bathing, and feeding himself to playing his beloved guitar! Truly a remarkable journey! All of this, and of course, we put Chris on the HOT SEAT by asking the 10 questions made famous by Bernard Pivot and then James Lipton on Inside The Actors Studio with a twist!:) Learn more about your ad choices. Interview with High Frequency

6/5/2023
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast Tom not only plays host and interviewer, but also interviewee alongside High Frequency bandmates, Antony Collett and Martin ‘Corky’ Cork. The reason for this very indulgent episode is because we have a self-recorded, self-mixed three-track E.P. called ‘Some Songs You May Have Heard… But Not Like This!’, which should be out right now on all streaming platforms. The songs included on the E.P. are re-recorded versions of songs that were either incompletely recorded or never made it on to any previous album or E.P. The other thing the songs have in common is, as you may be able to tell from the title, that we’ve continued to play them in our live set, even all these years later. As well s covering the E.P., we give a potted history of the band, warts and all. I hope you can forgive this blatant self-promotion, I promise I won’t make a habit of this kind of thing… until we release the full-length album we're working on anyway! Find High Frequency on whatever streaming service you use to listen to your music, add the songs (and maybe even some of the old ones) to your public playlists, and share them on social media. I hope you this chat as much as we did having it. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Terry Reid & George K of Cosmic American Derelicts Interview

Terry Reid began performing and touring as a professional at 15 in the UK. As a teenager he opened for The Rolling Stones, Cream and Jethro Tull. He was offered the lead singer spot in Deep Purple from Ritchie Blackmore and introduced Robert Plant to Jimmy Page. He's worked and played with so many people over the years but he's been gigging out with George Kapitanelis and his New Jersey based Cosmic American Derelicts for 15 years. These two have a kinship beyond playing music together (ie a shared love of westerns) and we have a great conversation with them about their new album Bergenfield Blues. Besides diving into some of the blues meets country with a bit of southern rock we liked on Bergenfield Blues, we got to hear some road stories from Terry and George. 6/3/2023
This week Tom & Zeus review the 1983-1984 "Lick It Up Tour" from KISS. This is SIOL's 6th KISS tour reviewed. This tour was a for the new album, "Lick It Up", which was the first KISS album without makeup. The album also was the one and only album where guitarist Vinnie Vincent is listed as an actual band member. The tour began in Europe and continued in United States and Canada. Despite the new look and a killer album, ticket sales were at the lowest point since KISS' inception, averaging slightly more than 5,000 a night. As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous 5 tours reviewed so far. Rock is Lit: John Wray On His Metal-Centric Novel ‘Gone to the Wolves’, & Jon Verno From Metal Mayhem ROC & Tom Gigliotti From Shout It Out Loudcast Give a Crash-Course on Metal Subgenres

6/2/2023
Calling all metalheads out there in podcast land. Have I got the novel and episode for you. John Wray is here to talk about his brand-new novel, ‘Gone to the Wolves’, which author Raven Leilani describes as “a love letter to metal that captures both its brutal kinetics and its nearness to the sublime.” The novel follows Kip, Kira, and Leslie Z, three teenagers living on Florida’s Gulf Coast in the late 1980s. All three come from unhappy homes, of one sort or another, but forge a friendship centered around their love for metal. If you’ve been waiting for a novel to come along that treats metal with respect rather than parody, your wait it over. But even if you didn’t grow up watching ‘Head Bangers Ball’ or hoarding Metallica or Slayer records, there’s something in this novel for everyone. In the last segment, Jon Verno, from the Metal Mayhem ROC podcast, and Tom Gigliotti, co-host of Shout It Out Loudcast, school me on several subgenres of metal mentioned in ‘Gone to the Wolves’, including death, thrash, black, and glam metal. Only Three Lads: Tony Valentino of The Standells (Top 5 Garage Rock Songs)

6/2/2023
We're heading straight to the garage this week! Following the release of Lenny Kaye's seminal Nuggets compilation of '60s garage bands in 1972, legions of young musicians eschewed the increasingly complex, bloated , pretentious rock of the day to return to simpler, rawer, more primal sounds. These embryonic punk rock records not only inspired bands like Ramones, Blondie, The Clash and The Sex Pistols, but launched a full scale garage rock revival scene in the '80s that reverberated into the 21st century with bands like The White Stripes, The Black Keys and The Strokes. We are honored to have one of the key architects of '60s garage/punk rock joining us as our Third Lad this week, Tony Valentino of The Standells! He was the man who wrote and played one of THE most recognizable and distinctive riffs in all of rock n' roll, "Dirty Water," as well as Standells classics such as "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," "Why Pick On Me," "Barracuda," "Riot On Sunset Strip," and "Try It." Rock n' roll brought a young Valentino from his native Italy to the land of milk and honey (and root beer), the USA. Hear about his incredible journey that led to appearances in TV shows and movies such as The Munsters, The Bing Crosby Show, American Bandstand, Ben Casey, Get Yourself A College Girl, and Riot on Sunset Strip, a wild tour with The Rolling Stones, shady managers, Laurel Canyon dalliances with The Beach Boys and the Manson Family, and how Rick Springfield provided the inspiration behind his latest album, Dirty Water Revisited. Dirty Water Revisited is out now on the marvelous Big Stir Records, and features ten newly recorded tracks from the guitar hero, reimagining many of the classics that made The Standells the ultimate purveyors of gritty riffs and swaggering hits in the '60s, and adds a pair of blistering originals to the mix. Far from a nostalgia trip, Dirty Water Revisited is proof positive that rock n' roll is alive and well in the hands of a true legend. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
