Are we in a housing crisis in Redding. No. But it's also complicated.

5/25/2023
In today’s episode, we talk with Assistant City Manager Steve Bade about housing in the City of Redding. We’ll cover what our current vacancy rate is and what that means in terms of housing availability. We also talk about income-eligible housing, housing for the unsheltered in our community, and Short Term Rentals' effect on our housing stock. So are we in a housing crisis in Redding? Steve Bade doesn’t think so, but there is no single solution to address all the different housing needs in the community. Between the economy and the cost of construction, things are not getting any easier. But he has reason to be hopeful, and we think you will too. Redding is working on housing solutions from multiple angles, and while results won’t appear overnight, things are moving in a positive direction. a RABA Refresh

5/18/2023
If you visited any larger city, you know public transportation is a big part of life for millions of Americans. Here in Redding, life without a car is a challenge.- but that could change in the next few years. Enter John Andoh, the new General Transit manager for the Redding Area Bus Authority. He comes to us with over 20 years of experience in the transit industry in several municipalities. He has big plans for what public transportation can look like in our area and acknowledges that the system today has some inefficiencies. Cities are diversifying their transportation options, and John wants to look at what's possible in Redding. Think small car share options, mobile pay, on-demand RABA service, and more. His passion for technology and innovation is evident. So you may never have experienced RABA, but big changes might have you rethinking your use of public transit in Redding. And if you do, be on the lookout for John. He makes it a point to take RABA everywhere he can, including to work every day. Reducing Food Waste in Redding

5/10/2023
Did you know that nearly 40% of food in America is wasted? Food is best if used - period! With careful planning and better food recycling resources, our community can help address hunger and protect the environment simultaneously. Enter Senate Bill 1383, a law recently passed in California requiring businesses and residents to compost or recycle food waste, including wasted food from the refrigerator, expired items, and table scraps. Locally, this bill will help support those with food insecurities in our community while maintaining valuable space in the local landfill and reducing the release of harmful gasses into the environment. What does this mean for Redding residents? Public Works Supervisor Jeff Hansen updates us on the SB1383 rollout already in place with food-generating businesses here in Redding. The residential rollout is slated for the end of summer, and Jeff shares how this change will impact local trash services. In case you need a refresher on SB1383, Katie and Steve reshare their conversation with Deputy Director of Public Works Paul Clemens from last year to better understand what SB1383 means in the larger trash industry and how it will impact Redding. The General Plan: What it is and why you should care.

4/13/2023
Today we are hoping you stick with us through an update on the General Plan. Now before we lose anyone, the General Plan is 20-year planning document that has a massive impact on the future of our City. And community involvement plays a key role in how the plan is put together. Steve and I joke all the time that our podcast topics aren’t always super interesting to most people, but believe me, you’ll want to understand what this document does - and doesn’t - do so you have a better understanding of how the City makes decisions. In today’s episode, we talk with Kent Manuel and Jeremy Pagan about what might change in this General Plan, and why you should care. After all, 20 years is a long time and, while nothing is set in stone, the General Plan is a guiding document that will be referenced long into the future. Fun fact, Kent oversaw the general plan development for Redding 20 years ago, so this isn’t his first Rodeo. He has a wealth of knowledge and can speak to what has been done in previous plans and what's new in this version. We don’t expect you to take notes, but you should know what the General Plan is and how to get involved if you feel so inclined. The Power Grid and the Future of Electric in Redding

3/10/2023
Is Redding ready for Electric Vehicles? And what about the move toward all electric appliances? The answers are complicated, but essentially, yes, REU is ready now and is planning for the future. Today we talk with Lisa Casner, Electric Manager of Resources about why moving to electric is a good option for some in our community, especially with gas prices remaining high. She also talks to us about what it looks like to make the switch to electric appliances and the rebates available for families looking to make that change. Lisa’s goal is not to get every family to switch to electric, but to provide options that both align with State and Federal mandates, and the growing trend toward more sustainable fuel sources. And since we mentioned sustainable resources, Lisa gives us a rundown of how REU is sourcing their electricity from sustainable wind and solar, meaning that using REU power is clean energy. We hope this episode makes you proud of being part of a locally-owned electric utility. Short Term Rentals: Good or Bad for Redding?

2/13/2023
Welcome to a City of Redding Podcast. Today we are talking about Short Term Rentals! We recorded an episode about ADUs and Short Term Rentals with Planning Manager Lily Toy in May of Last year but a lot has happened since then. A new proposed set of ordinances went before the City Council late last year to address community concerns about how short term rentals were affecting our neighborhoods. After a robust City Council discussion, the ordinances went back to the Planning Commission for review, and will be coming before the City Council again on February 21st. In this episode we talk with Development Services Director Jeremy Pagan about the new proposed ordinance changes, why they were proposed, and what those would mean for our community if adopted. There are strong opinions on both sides of the debate with many claiming that Short Term Rentals bring tourism and TOT revenue into the City. However you feel about Short Term Rentals, this episode should give you more information about what will be discussed on February 21st and how to get involved if you’d like to join the discussion. Paid Parking Downtown: "Worst Idea Ever" or a Boost to Downtown Business?

12/21/2022
In today’s episode we connect with City of Redding Transportation Planner Zach Bonnin and Julie Dixon from Dixon Resources Unlimited to dive into the Downtown Redding Parking Program launching soon. There have been a lot of good questions from the community about parking, and we wanted to get the answers from the experts. We learn how parking turnover is key to the success of downtown businesses and how the new program will address this. In fact, Julie highlights 3 other cities in California that saw downtown business grow as a result of a paid parking program. Counter-intuitive right? Also, this program is not a revenue generator for the City so why would the City do this at all? We’ll find out about the goal of the program and how Julie has helped other municipalities figure out a parking strategy that works for them. One thing is clear - Parking is a big deal with many passionate opinions. However you feel about parking downtown, this episode should give you more information about the strategy behind the decisions that were made.
