September 15th the University of Florida held a ceremony that had a somber but uplifting feel. The event was to unveil a historical marker, the UF Integration Pioneers Historical Maker, to be more specific .The marker recounts the story of desegregation at UF and highlights some of the key moments in UF’s history. The Gainesville Sun was allowed access to some of the nurses and doctors that work at Unit 75, a Covid-19 unit, at UF Health. We all know the River Styx of Greek Mythology, but did you know there is one in Alachua County, Florida. Gainesville Sun intern and student journalist Chasity Maynard guest hosts this episode of the Classified History Podcast, where we will explore the history of a Native America burial ground dating back nearly 2,000 years. Dr. Neill Wallis, an associate curator in archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, will provide expert insight on Alachua County's River Styx and the people associated with the Cades Pond Culture. Wallis co-authored the first published academic paper on the site. He will help us learn about the little-known history of this area, and who lived and connected with land long before it was colonized.

And I love challenging myself and others to try new things that could lead to a discovery. Maybe you find out you’re good at something like soccer or juggling. Maybe it’s a kind of food your find out you like. Or discovering a new trail you love to hike. Maybe it’s the discovery of a new species of animal or plant that was previously thought to be something else. Now that’s Science. I mean by definition Science is the study of the physical and natural world through observation and experimentation. But Discovery is right there in the mix of science. You observe and experiment to discover, right. But what about when that discovery turns out to be something you never expected. Something new. A surprise. That’s today’s episode. Surprised by Science.
