Cities and Memory - remixing the world

Podcasts

Cities and Memory remixes the world, one sound at a time - a global collaboration between artists and sound recordists all over the world. The project presents an amazingly-diverse array of field recordings from all over the world, but also reimagined, recomposed versions of those recordings as we go on a mission to remix the world. What you'll hear in the podcast are our latest sounds - either a field recording from somewhere in the world, or a remixed new composition based solely on those sounds. Each podcast description tells you more about what you're hearing, and where it came from. There are more than 5,000 sounds featured on our sound map, spread over more than 100 countries and territories. The sounds cover parts of the world as diverse as the hubbub of San Francisco’s main station, traditional fishing women’s songs at Lake Turkana, the sound of computer data centres in Birmingham, spiritual temple chanting in New Taipei City or the hum of the vaporetto engines in Venice. You can explore the project in full at http://www.citiesandmemory.com

A busker of west African origin sings under the porticos in Padova, Italy - this particular singer always chooses this spot for the excellent reverb it offers, as well as the healthy number of passers-by. 10/18/2021
Padova busker reimagined by Barney Spigel. "Moved by the music being performed as well as the sense of place captured in the recording, I wanted to zoom in on some of my favourite slices of the soundscape by looping and layering them into an evolving pattern of rhythm, texture, harmony and timbre so as to hypnotise the listener into perceiving the original recording with an extremely heightened sense of what I love about it."

Villa del Conte campana della sera reimagined by Rafoo. "When I first heard and picked the field recording, I remembered it being warm and idyllic. However, the day I finally got to working on it, I couldn't feel anything but discomfort/uneasiness. The resonance from the bells which builds up in the later part of the recording sounded like something straight out of an avant garde horror flick. "As hard as I tried to remove that feeling from the recording (by actually editing out that...

Abbazia Pisani September bells reimagined by Steve Germana. "For the Cities and Memory Italian remix project, I chose a field recording that began with steady bells and transitioned into bird calls. 10/15/2021
Piazza della Cisterna, San Gimignano reimagined by Audio Obscura. "I asked Cities and Memory to allocate me a random field recording which seemed a fun way to approach this. I listened through to the recording only once and then decided to cut up the recording into small fragments and begin to assemble a piece this way. "It was made in a very haphazard way and after a short while I had a basic cut up section that I then recorded and improvised on top of, adding beats and synth sounds...
