Cities and Memory - remixing the world

Podcasts

Cities and Memory remixes the world, one sound at a time - a global collaboration between artists and sound recordists all over the world. The project presents an amazingly-diverse array of field recordings from all over the world, but also reimagined, recomposed versions of those recordings as we go on a mission to remix the world. What you'll hear in the podcast are our latest sounds - either a field recording from somewhere in the world, or a remixed new composition based solely on those sounds. Each podcast description tells you more about what you're hearing, and where it came from. There are more than 5,000 sounds featured on our sound map, spread over more than 100 countries and territories. The sounds cover parts of the world as diverse as the hubbub of San Francisco’s main station, traditional fishing women’s songs at Lake Turkana, the sound of computer data centres in Birmingham, spiritual temple chanting in New Taipei City or the hum of the vaporetto engines in Venice. You can explore the project in full at http://www.citiesandmemory.com

Half the speed of light

1/26/2022
Krossneslaug hot spring, Iceland reimagined by Jeff Dungfelder. "“Half the Speed of Light” is based on reimagining a field recording of the water sounds from the Krossneslaug hot spring in Iceland. Krossneslaug is heated by natural hot-springs, and is considered an ‘Infinity Pool’ due to the fact it has magnificent views of the ocean, with nothing impeding the view between the two waters. "Thinking about experiencing the sounds of the spring and the view from the infinity pool made me...

Venice morning, Fondamenta dei Ormesini

1/26/2022
Fondamenta dei Ormesini, Venice, reimagined by John Tenney. "A quiet morning in Venice: people chat, others pass by with radios, dogs and cats and pigeons make their contributions. The calm is broken by a runaway cruise ship approaching and crashing into the pilings; afterwards, the city is more peaceful than ever. "This is based on a real event from 2019, which injured several people, and had the long-range effect of banning the monstrous ships from docking in Venice. The city has had...

1/26/2022
Edinburgh's Hermitage of Braid reimagined by Daniela O'Fee. "I chose Mark Wilden’s recording of water rushing under the bridge at Hermitage of Braid in Edinburgh Scotland as a departure for a reimagined, environmental tone poem. "Listening to the sound and researching the site’s historic ice house along with its recent extreme flooding called to mind last year’s unprecedented weather disasters in my Canadian locale of Kamloops on the unceded lands of Tk’emlups te Secwepemc. Reflecting...

The moon in daylight

1/19/2022
"The original recording of shortwave radio conversations crackling back and forth from Antarctica to an isolated radio operator in New Jersey had a real melancholy, especially when I considered that the radio operator who does most of the talking is now sadly no longer with us. "The conversation between the two men tends towards the philosophical, and how we are observed different aspects of the same world at the same time. The composition based on this recording is intended to be a...

Bollettino del mare

1/19/2022
"We’re used to working on loops and the repetitive speech of the maritime weather speaker immediately gave us ideas. Moreover, he gives the maritime weather for the Adriatic coast (among others) on which we made field recordings this summer. We therefore created a loop with samplers and synths to set the speaker's voice to music, then we integrated some field recordings from the Adriatic sea. We took the whole source recording, we just sliced the phrasing a bit to give it more...

JA4 in Habana

1/19/2022
"I live on an even smaller remote island in tiny Japan, with only 1,800 people living on it. It is a closed island with only 1,800 inhabitants. I live there somewhat wondering if I have to stay here for the rest of my life. Thinking about Cuba, a tropical country I have never been to.... My beloved car is an old Honda JA4, rusted by the sea breeze. The muffler was rusted and had a hole in it, making a loud noise as we drove at night to the ocean. Listening to shortwave broadcasts from...
