A few days ago, the NHL announced their finalists for the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award. Unfortunately, Tom Fitzgerald was not named a finalist. Similar to a lot of his teammates, Nico Hischier was able to have his best season as a member of the New Jersey Devils organization in which he was able to put up career-high numbers across the board. Many people outside the Devils discourse didn't think that highly of him going into the season, but Hischier proved why he can still be an NHL superstar. He was productive both offensively and defensively, is a finalist for the Selke Trophy, and obviously is the captain/leader of the team. The two primary goals heading into the offseason for the New Jersey Devils are to retain Timo Meier and Jesper Bratt. Obviously, both of them are pending restricted free agents and are set to receive possible pay increases. Obviously, Jesper Bratt's contract has been a pretty big talking point throughout the New Jersey Devils' discourse. Tom Fitzgerald has mentioned that he doesn't anticipate much trouble in regard to getting him extended. However, it seems as though Devils fans have heard this story before and are just anxiously waiting for it to actually get done. Jesper Bratt is set to become a restricted free agent, and this is the third time in four years in which he doesn't have a deal in place. During his exit interview, general manager Tom Fitzgerald confirmed that his plan is to retain head coach Lindy Ruff. The New Jersey Devils saw a lot of success this season and Ruff deserves a lot of credit, which is why he is a finalist for the Jack Adams Award. Shortly after the New Jersey Devils' game five loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, Erik Haula revealed that he wanted to re-sign with the organization. After a memorable season that involved breaking franchise records and winning a playoff series for the first time since 2012, the New Jersey Devils had their historic run ended by the Carolina Hurricanes. The New Jersey Devils now find themselves in a 3-1 hole to the Carolina Hurricanes, and have shown no signs of a possible comeback. Despite a brief scare in game six, Akira Schmid rebounded nicely and collected his second shutout of the series. It's also worth mentioning that this is only the second time in team history in which the Devils initially fell 0-2 and still win the series.
