Dr Susan Alberti is cofounder and MD of the DANSU Group and Chairman of the Susan Alberti Medical Research Foundation. For 30 years the Susan Alberti Gala Ball has raised over $6m toward medical research including finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. In 2004 Susan became a Board Member of the Western Bulldogs Football Club. She is the Patron of the Western Bulldogs Football Club and founding Co-chair of the Western Bulldogs Forever Foundation. In 2012 she became Vice President of the Club. Susan received her AM (Member of the Order of Australia), AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) for her contribution towards the cause of diabetes research. She is a Melburnian of the Year. Susan was awarded the JDRF International Volunteer of the Year 2003, this is the first time this honour has been bestowed on an individual outside of the United States in its 45 year history. In 2017 she published an autobiography “The Footy Lady’.

According to the World Economic Forum research, it could take 170 years to eradicate the disparity in pay and employment opportunities for men and women globally. The report says: “More than a decade of data has revealed that progress is still too slow for realising the full potential of one half of humanity within our lifetimes.” What are the barriers holding women back from earning, saving and being valued fairly at work? In this episode Alma Besserdin talks to Libby Lyons, Director Workplace Gender Equality Agency Australia, what government and organisations collaboratively can do to advocate the change to ensure women’s work is properly valued and that decades of inequity are brought to an end.

Beliefs are the thoughts in our head that influence our behavior, attitude and actions. The beliefs that affect our lives are either Empowering Beliefs which enable us to lead flourishing lives or Self Limiting Beliefs that stop us from achieving our goals and where we live a life where we languish and flounder. One of the most common reasons people fail to achieve their goals is simply because they don’t believe they can achieve it. They’re lacking self-belief. Dr. Demartini says “Your values arise from and are therefore determined by your conscious or unconscious voids (what you perceive as most missing). What you perceive as most missing (void) in your life therefore becomes what you perceive as most important (value). As the contingent workforce increases globally, the employment market is changing. Results from Deloitte’s 2015 Global Human Capital Trends report indicates that eight out of 10 respondents believe demand for skills is driving a trend toward greater use of contingent workers. Countries such as the US are leading the way. A recent report from the US Government Accountability Office estimates that just over 40% of the country’s workforce is made up of contingent workers and this is expected to grow to 50% by 2020. In Australia, contingent workers are believed to comprise around 30% of the market. Lot's of start-up companies are showing that they are set up my migrants around the world. Immigrants today are more than twice as likely to fund businesses as their native-born counterparts and are responsible for more than 25% of all new business creation and related job growth. It seems that number of women Entrepreneurs globally is increasing but this vary from country to country and there is still lot to be done in this area. While Cyber Security challenges are a serious rising global issue, women in these jobs are still facing obstacles being recognized in this industry. According to The Center for Cyber Safety and Education, women comprise only 11% of the total information security workforce and yet it was reported that in most cases women have a higher level of education than men. The same report has also indicated that 51 % of women surveyed in this field indicated that they have experienced some level of discrimination. In this episode, Alma Besserdin is talking to Magda Lilia Chelly, who is Director of Responsible Cyber by day, and a cyber feminist hacker by night. Magda will share the path and career journey that has led her to reach the top of the field of Cyber Security, and is helping other women follow her direction.

Whilst the global economy is on the horizon, it seems that that most countries don’t have infrastructure and programs to support skilled or highly educated and experienced people from abroad. Why do we still demand and insist on “local experience” in a global world? We are talking about challenges that skilled migrants experience in a new county. It has become clear that the 21 Century is an era of unprecedented human mobility that has been markedly urban as migrants, both internal and international, move to cities and urban areas, bring diversity and connect communities within and across borders to create new linkages among localities. This calls for new urban governance, migration policies and mindset change from employers. In this episode we will start by talking about some challenges facing skilled migrants and touch on benefits of what they may bring to a new country.
