P2P episode 386: International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action by United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia

This week on #TubtaNabadda, we discuss the important role of peace and communal harmony as promoted by the Holy Month Ramadan – a period of reflection, compassion and care for one another. In the first segment of the programme, we speak with Abdiweli Yahye, a representative of Afuri Walal, a local youth organization in Mogadishu, about how charity for those in need can reinforce peace and social cohesion. He shares with us some amazing stories about the values of Ramadan, and how these values reinforce unity among families and wider communities. In the second segment of the programme, we hear from Fatuma Ali of the Somali Girls Rights Development Organization (SGRDO) in South West State. She tells us how respecting and embracing diversity can promote peace among communities, and how helping poor people during Ramadan is a moral duty in line with tenants of Islam. This week on #TubtaNabadda, in the wake of the International Day of Education, we highlight the significance of ensuring access to quality education for Somalis as their nation rebuilds from years of conflict and civil strife. In the opening segment, we will hear from Noor Ali Farah, a sociology lecturer at the University of Somalia, who will be discussing the challenges and opportunities for Somali students to acquire knowledge. These challenges include excessive use of social media for entertainment, lack of public libraries and security issues. Opportunities include self-discipline, the use of social media for education, educated educators and government stability. In the second segment, we hear from Amina Nur, a social science student at the Somali National University, who discusses challenges students face, including security and resource scarcity, and suggests ways to improve the education system in Somalia to ensure access to high-quality education and better support for students. This week on #TubtaNabadda, we focus on what it takes to become a young entrepreneur in Somalia, speaking with two young entrepreneurs who operate coffee shops in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, where the pastime of socialising over a cup of tea or coffee has grown thanks to growing stability and security in the city. In the first segment, we hear from Amira Farah Ahmed, founder of ‘The Social Hub,’ a local coffee shop. She discusses her entrepreneurial journey, obstacles she has encountered, and solutions she has developed; she also shares with us the particular challenges that young women can face when starting small businesses. In the second segment, we hear from Hassan Mohamed, the manager of ‘Mogadishu Coffee,’ another local establishment. He talks about his plans to expand his coffee shop's social impact, given its role as a space where people can come together to have meaningful conversations and social interactions, through the use of innovative business ideas. Engaging in sports like swimming can greatly enhance physical and mental health and well-being, particularly for young girls and boys.
