Soul-Fattening: The Discipline Of Fasting

9/9/2018
More
The topic of fasting—going without food for a limited period of time in order to draw near to God—is one of the least-practiced and least-preached among the spiritual disciplines. But fasting is mentioned more in the Bible than water baptism. The subject is referenced seventy-seven times in Scripture. And although we are not commanded to fast, we are expected to fast and will be rewarded for fasting. Pastor Gary shares five benefits of fasting in today’s study from Isaiah 58.

All Are Welcome

9/2/2018
More
In Isaiah 56, the prophet Isaiah addresses the problem of exclusivity—that God’s people thought of themselves as an exclusive club to which “foreigners” and “outcasts” were not invited. In addition, God expresses His heart for those who felt excluded. This is both a warning to those who feel exclusive with God, and a welcome to those who feel excluded from God. It is good for us to examine our own hearts in these areas—do we have any prejudice toward people that we have excluded? Or perhaps...

Seek The Lord

8/26/2018
More
For people who are estranged from God, Isaiah gives a clear invitation: that if we SEEK the Lord and REPENT (turn from our sins and turn to God), He will “have mercy” and “freely pardon” us. So if God is a merciful God and freely pardons all who turn to Him, the only thing that stands between my sin and my forgiveness is my pride. Isaiah 30:18 tells us that “God longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion.” Seek the Lord today and find mercy and forgiveness from Him.

Jesus The Messiah

8/19/2018
More
In 700 B.C., Isaiah gives vivid details about the suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection of the long-anticipated Messiah. We have the advantage of looking back in time and seeing that all of what Isaiah prophesied was fulfilled entirely and exclusively by Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Messiah of Isaiah 53, and He came to earth to save us from our sins. Why would God announce His coming with such specificity 700 years in advance if not because He loves us and wants us to recognize Jesus and...

The One True God

8/12/2018
More
In response to Israel’s idolatry, God emphasizes His reality—that He is the only God and there is none like Him (Isaiah 46:9). Today, there is a plurality of gods among various world religions. It’s the equivalent of modern idolatry. And yet, many Christians remain silent about their faith for fear that they might be offending another religion. But how is it a loving thing to withhold information about the true and living God from those who are caught up in modern idolatry? Christians need...

Forget The Past

8/5/2018
More
If you have no regrets in life, it’s probably because you haven’t lived long enough. We all have regrets; regrets about things we’ve done or said; regrets about things left undone or unsaid; regrets about what happened to us, or things that never happened that he had wished for. What we do with our regrets is the difference between someone who moves forward and someone who is stuck in the past. God says to us in Isaiah 43:18, “Forget the former things. Do not dwell on the past.” But what...

Don't Be Afraid

7/29/2018
More
More than 300 times in the Bible, God exhorts us to not be afraid, or to be worried, or to be anxious. Why? Because we are! Everyone wrestles with some kind of fear in his or her life. No matter how tough we present ourselves, all of us deal with fear to some degree. Just between Isaiah 41 and 43, God tells us to not be afraid five times because (1) He is with us, (2) He will help us, and (3) He loves us. If you’ve ever struggled with fear in your life, you’ll be encouraged in today’s study.

A Tale Of Two Glories

7/22/2018
More
In the 17th Century, English and Scottish theologians wrote what is referred to as the “Westminster Shorter Catechism”. In it, we read this statement: “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” What does it mean to “glorify God” and how can we effectively do it? Too often we live for our own glory—our accomplishments, our achievements, our desire for notoriety, etc. But as Christians, God is to be glorified in ALL that we do. Follow along in today’s study with Pastor...
