From Trash To Treasure

8/19/2019
More
Once in a while there is a commercial on television that truly catches my attention--instead of merely irritating me because it interrupted the program I was watching. An ad like that recently showed a woman taking the broken pieces of a beautiful blue and white vase that no doubt had been a favorite. She glued the pieces onto a glass vase in such a way that she created a lovely new pattern. Then she filled in the spaces with paint as if it were grout. A bouquet of fresh flowers completed...

Bernadette’s Story

8/5/2019
More
If you read my book More Precious Than Diamonds, you may remember the story of Bernadette, a young woman who longed for a child at the same time her husband, Alex, was battling what turned out to be terminal cancer. The good part to her story is that before her husband passed away, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

How Long Is Eternity?

7/29/2019
More
Lying in bed the other night waiting to fall asleep, I got to thinking about eternity. Pretty heavy subject when you’re supposed to be winding down for the night! I thought how hard it is for us human beings to get a handle on anything that will last forever because we everything we see on this earth has an ending point, including our own lives.

When Is It Okay To Do Nothing?

7/22/2019
More
It’s not my nature to sit and do nothing. I like to be busy--to feel that I’m accomplishing something that counts. So, when a few months ago I found myself spending more and more time just sitting on the sofa watching “whatever” on TV, I knew that was not normal for me. OK, I’ll admit this happened during a period when I was very, very tired, so I probably should not have felt guilty. There were reasons why I didn’t feel like attacking any projects or being particularly productive....

Comfort—it’s a word I like to hear. It has such a—well, reassuring sound to it, right? It’s also a Bible word. Bible teacher G. Campbell Morgan says that the word “comfort” occurs in some form ten times in just five verses. That’s in 2 Corinthians chapter 2.

How To Use What You Have

7/1/2019
More
George Washington Carver was an American botanist back in the 1900s who became famous for discovering 300 uses for the lowly peanut. Most people wouldn’t have been willing to devote their lives to a mere peanut. But the story goes that Carver once asked the Lord, “Lord, what is the universe?” The Lord said, “George, that’s too big for your little head. Suppose you let me take care of the universe.” Greatly humbled, the scientist asked, “Then, Lord, if the universe is too big for me to...

What To Do In A Storm

Jesus was tired. He had taught large crowds of people who were gathered at the Sea of Galilee—crowds so large, in fact, that he taught from a boat to keep from being crushed.

Advice For A Procrastinator

6/17/2019
More
The slogan on the t-shirt said, “Procrastinators, Unite—Tomorrow.” Can you relate to that? Most of us are very good at putting off until tomorrow what we don’t want to do today. Some of us even go so far as to make lists of what we know we should do. We carefully arrange the tasks in order of importance—and then totally ignore the list and do what we wanted to do in the first place. I know, because I’m a procrastinator.

How To Keep Your Kids From Killing Each Other!

6/10/2019
More
One of the issues of parenting that I hated the most was dealing with sibling rivalry. We have three children, and when they were kids at home, I certainly had my share of listening to them squabble and pick at each other. I hated it—maybe because I’m an only child and did not grow up fighting with brothers and sisters. Sometimes I wanted to walk out the door and not come back—at least for a while.

What God Thinks of You

When I was growing up, a friend of ours had a dog she named “Precious.” My dad would almost get ill when he heard her call the dog by that name. She was a rather homely little animal—and besides, he reasoned, “Precious” is much too sentimental, gushy and syrupy a name for any dog.

How to Be in Perfect Shape

5/20/2019
More
Most of us are not completely happy with how our bodies look. We’d like to shed a few pounds—without any effort, of course. We wish we had more muscles or curves. Or maybe it’s more hair you would like. But what you have is what you’ve got, right?

Four Things I Learned as a Mother

5/13/2019
More
I’m a grandmother now. All three of our kids have homes of their own and children of their own. I’m at the stage when it’s interesting to reminisce about the period of life when the children were younger and still at home. One of the great things about this is that you tend to forget how tired you were at the time and only remember the good times you had together.

How to Handle Interruptions

4/29/2019
More
Have you noticed that Jesus never hurried? In fact, on the contrary, when His friend Lazarus was dying, He delayed coming to see him until Lazarus was dead. Of course Jesus knew that He was going to bring him back to life in a few days. Jesus could accept delays in life because He had the decided advantage of seeing time from an eternal perspective. He knew the past, the present and future—all at the same time.

What You Must Do to Follow Christ

4/22/2019

You probably remember that some of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen by background. In fact, several were fishing at the moment when Jesus called them. "’Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men.’" Do you remember what their response was? Here it is: The Bible says, “At once they left their nets and followed him” (Mark 1:17-18).

Greg Fisher, who for years was a missionary in Africa, tells that when he was growing up in the U.S., his dad was a street evangelist. Yes, he preached openly on the streets to anyone who would listen. Greg tells about going with his dad when he was only seven years old to a spot in Hollywood right in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre to hand out Christian leaflets while his dad preached to the crowds who lined up for the Sunday matinee at the theater. One bystander began to yell at his...

How is Your Self-Image?

4/8/2019

Image is so important to a woman. Her appearance and the impression she makes matter very much to her. Women want to know what the “look” is for this season so they can have the “correct image.” Are skirts going to be short, medium, or long? What is the most important part of make-up this year—the lips or the eyes? Should I have the suntanned look or more natural? What’s in—casual and comfortable or tight-fitting styles?
