He Dedicated His Life to Studying Forgiveness

5/18/2023
Do you want to learn about the science behind forgiveness? We invite you to join us for Episode 11 of TFF where we discuss the research that Everett Worthington has done around forgiveness. Everett Worthington is Commonwealth Professor Emeritus since his retirement from Virginia Commonwealth University on October 1, 2017. He is still affiliated with the Department of Psychology. After the murder of his mother in 1996, Everett began thinking about how the practice of forgiveness relates to justice, faith, and virtue—a main theme of his recent work. While he forgave the murderer, as did his brother and sister, the emotional fallout was devastating, and in 2005, his brother committed suicide. In addition to studying forgiveness of others, Everett drew on his own feelings of guilt and self-condemnation, and added the study of self-forgiveness to his interests. Darryl Burton - Miracle Man: From Innocence to Redemption

4/13/2023
Darryl Burton made a promise, “Jesus, if you’re real and help me get out of this place, not only will I serve you, but I’ll tell the world about you.” God delivered on that promise and Darryl was exonerated after spending 24 years in prison Today, Darryl is an associate pastor at the largest Methodist Church in the US, teaching the world about forgiveness and hope, even in the most desperate situations. In 1984, a drug dealer was shot to death at a gas station in St. Louis, Missouri. The man who shot him was a light-skinned African American male, 5’5” in height. Police looked for suspects and even though Darryl Burton was dark skinned and 5’10” in height, he was summoned to a police line up. Two men came forward identifying Darryl as the murder. Both were awaiting trial, but were given a lighter sentence if they testified that Burton was guilty. Darryl Burton was assigned a public defender who spent only one hour with him before his trial and the jury convicted him in less than an hour. Darryl found himself being sentenced to life in prison without parole. He was assigned to the Missouri State Penitentiary, one of the most violent prisons in the U.S. After learning of a confession from a witness who admitted in 1985, “You have the wrong man, he’s too dark,” Darryl worked with Centurion Ministries to have his wrongful conviction overturned. Darryl often recalls a letter that he wrote to Jesus while imprisoned. It said “Jesus, if you’re real and help me get out of this place, not only will I serve you, but I’ll tell the world about you.” Darryl now shares his nightmare story of adversity to help others and bring glory to the name of Jesus Christ. Since 2008, he has spoken about forgiveness, redemption, and hope at churches, conferences and lectures around the globe. Seven years after his exoneration, he never takes one day for granted. About Lisa My name is Lisa Toma, I am 38 years old and I am a mom of 3 little ones. Becoming a mom has been my biggest reason to really dive deep into my healing journey. I wanted to be able to show up as my highest self for my babies, but most importantly, for myself. In May 2002, my mother was murdered by my father when I was 18, the eldest sibling of 4. That day our lives got turned upside down and it was the beginning of our nightmare. We had no idea what the path ahead would be like and if we would be able to pull through. There was a lot of trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression and confusion to say the least. After years of pain and suffering, feeling like everything was always going wrong in my life, attracting the wrong partners and falling a victim to my story, I needed a change, I wanted peace. I was tired of fighting and I was tired of being so angry. I started my healing journey by getting through my traumas and changing my mindset, which eventually lead me to the final step of my healing. The step, that I never in a million years and swore to myself I could and would never do, forgive my father. I will lead you through my journey of how I got there and why I did, and now I am free.
