Vedanta Talks - Swami Sarvapriyananda

Swami Nishpapananda is a monk of the Ramakrishna Order of India, and an assistant minister at the Vedanta Society of St Louis, where he has resided since 1974. He became interested in Vedanta through college course work, joined the Order in 1981 and received final monastic vows in India in 1995. A graduate of Washington University, Swami Nishpapananda manages the book and multi-media publications of the Vedanta Society and is active in inter-faith work in the St Louis area. Swami Nishpapananda explains that while in the waking state we seek fulfillment through outward activity, the joy we feel after deep sleep arises from the stillness of mind and body, when the ego subsides and we rest in the Atman. Dr. Sthaneshwar Timalsina received academic and philological training from Mahendra Sanskrit University in Kathmandu; Sampurnananda Sanskrit University in Varanasi; as well as Martin Luther University in Germany, where he acquired his Ph.D. in Classical Indian Philosophy. While working on his dissertation, Dr. Timalsina taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Washington University in St. Louis. Since 2005, he taught in both the Department for the Study of Religions and the Department of Philosophy at San Diego State University. He is currently the Endowed Chair of Indic Studies at Stony Brook University, New York in the Department of Asian & Asian American Studies. ​ He has long dedicated himself to the goal of preserving the traditions he inherited in a modern, institutionalized way. This goal dates back to Acharya's time in Nepal, where he founded the Department of Tantric Studies at Nepal Sanskrit University in Kathmandu. Dr. Jeffery D. Long, the Carl W. Zeigler Professor of Religion, Philosophy, and Asian Studies, specializes in the religions and philosophies of India. He is the author of several books and numerous articles, as well as the editor of the series Explorations in Indic Traditions for Lexington Books. In 2020, he received Elizabethtown College’s Ranck Award for Excellence in Research, and in 2022, his book, Hinduism in America: A Convergence of Worlds, received the Rajinder and Jyoti Gandhi Book Award for Excellence in Theology, Philosophy, and Critical Reflection from the Dharma Academy of North America. Dr. Edwin Bryant received his Ph.D in Indic languages and Cultures from Columbia University. He taught Hinduism at Harvard University for three years, and is presently the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University where he teaches courses on Hindu philosophy and religion. He has received numerous awards and fellowships, published six books and authored a number of articles on Vedic history, yoga, and the Krishna tradition. In addition to his academic work for the scholarly community, Edwin's Penguin World Classics translation of the Srimad Bhagavata Purana, the traditional source for the story of Krishna's incarnation, is both for Indology specialists as well as students and those interested in Hinduism from the general reading public and the yoga community. All of us recall, upon waking up, that during deep sleep we knew nothing at all. But even when awake, while claiming so much scientific and practically useful knowledge about the material world, each of us, if honest, must confess: “I don’t know myself.” In this lecture, a contemporary philosophical analysis will be attempted of the intriguing Advaita Vedanta phenomenology of this common ignorance about the self as a positive ignorance (avidya) not just an absence of knowledge. Is the Self best known as unknown? Arindam Chakrabarti is an Indian philosopher who is a professor of philosophy at Ashoka University, India. He is the disciple of Sri Sri Sitaramdas Omkarnath. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Calcutta in 1976 and 1978, respectively. On the eve of the September 11th anniversary, PSI hosted a powerful evening of contemplative dialogue and spiritual solidarity. Peace in Dialogue: Dharma Across Traditions brought together three extraordinary teachers—Khentrul Rinpoche (Vajrayāna Buddhism), Swami Sarvapriyananda (Advaita Vedānta), and Ācārya Sthaneshwar Timalsina (Tantric Śaivism)—to reflect on how their traditions and personal journeys have crossed spiritual, cultural, and philosophical boundaries in pursuit of peace and wisdom. Rooted in ancient lineages yet deeply responsive to the present moment, these teachers shared stories and insights that illuminate a path forward—one that honors difference without division and upholds authenticity without exclusion. This live dialogue offered a rare window into the transformative power of interfaith engagement, contemplative wisdom, and shared inquiry. The event was hosted by the Psychotherapy & Spirituality Institute in partnership with St. John’s in the Village and Dzokden, with support from the broader interfaith and spiritual community.
