Gail Sahar- Psychology of America's Culture War

7/17/2023
Gail Sahar is the author of Blame and Political Attitudes: The Psychology of America's Culture War, her latest release about the blame-placing tendencies of American politics and how to change perspectives. Her research focuses on the links between political ideology, perceptions of the causes of social problems, blame, emotions, and attitudes toward controversial social issues, such as poverty, abortion, and terrorism. Professor Sahar's work offers hope to those working for political change as it suggests ways to influence the attitudes of others by focusing less on political ideology and more on perceptions of the causes of social problems. Professor Sahar has 8 publications in various peer-reviewed psychology journals. She has won awards for her teaching and was recently honored with an endowed chair for teaching and research. Her latest work, Blame and Political Attitudes: The Psychology of America's Culture War, demonstrates that the current emphasis on value differences, whether between conservatives and liberals in the U.S. or between religious and secular countries on a global level, ignores commonalities in the way people think about issues. She proposes that focusing on perceived causes of social problems is a much more promising avenue for dialog than trying to reconcile fundamental belief systems. The novel has been recognized as a reader-friendly, well-researched and insightful analysis by the UCLA research department and the best, most accessible, and most socially relevant book about attribution by NYU Professor John Jost. Gail will discuss her release as well as provide a fresh perspective on how to change political attitudes.

Alan Abbey, a Rhode Island native who graduated from the University of Rhode Island and previously worked in the IT field for 35 years. Before making the switch, a mold remediation company looking to expand into Rhode Island obtained certification for mold inspections and learned air quality testing. There are hundreds of thousands of different mold spores, and we can identify them all. Non-mold contaminants and irritants can be identified through allergen air quality testing. Our samples are sent to Independent AIHA EMLAP Accredited Laboratories, which provide reporting on which molds were encountered during our sampling, as well as spore counts (concentrations) and explanations for each one. Pollen, pet dander, and fiber contaminants are among the allergens identified in these reports. They use CRM (Continuous Radon Measurement) devices, which record and report hourly radon, temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity readings, all of which are important in radon gas measurement in a property. For longer-term radon measurements, they also use electret ion chambers. Short-term radon measurement lasts between 2 and 90 days, while long-term radon measurement lasts 91 days or more. Alan will talk about his company, Abbey Environmental Testing Services, and the home services they offer, such as mold inspection and air quality control. and how to safeguard your home.
